Working the same old diagram from Neville Hill today, empty to Hull and 0700 to King's Cross from there.
However it started from Hull 29 down so not too good so far.

We've just had a change of GPS signal being received. The Hull - KGX was still 30 minutes down leaving Peterborough when the GPS suddenly switched to a presently unknown service currently sat at York station. Time will tell what service we're now watching.

It's looking like we're back following a DVT and Class 91 from the position of the train sat at York. I'm guessing it'll be working the 1001 YRK - KGX?

Keeping us on our toes ...is someone having a little fun?

Oh well, it'll give the ECML regulars amongst us something to look out for :D

Yes I think you could be right! We are now on our third different set of today

First working this morning was the HST set which left 29 minutes late on the 0700 HUL - KGX. It was still 30 minutes late south of Peterborough when the signal suddenly switched to a 225 set sat in York station. This set then departed with the 1001 YRK - KGX. Before reaching King's Cross, around 1215pm the signal switched for the third time today to another 225 sat back at York.

This new third set has now just departed York south towards Doncaster at 1232, but I can't work out which service it seems to be on.

Interesting..........

Sounds like it's having a "Groundhog day", 'waking up' in York station each time :D

Must have been overtaken by 1E10 on the 4-track north of Peterborough.
1E10 has just arrived at KGX while the GPS signal is at Holloway.

Be interesting to see its next working.

Now working the 1535 to Leeds.

Are we sure it's back in a 225? Because it arrived at KGX in time to have been 1E11 07.52 ABD-KGX.

Or it could just have been a test, which could fit in with the "original" set having sat in Bounds Green for a couple of days before the signal switched.

It doesn't look far enough into the train shed to be in a buffet car. But it's about right for a DVT (then again it's also far enough in for a 43, did we ever work out if the signal was coming from the 43 or the buffet?).

Seems it is a 225 and it looks like it's now 1S23 KGX-EDB.

The live departure board at Peterborough is showing it as 3 minutes down, which is tying in with the time it'll be going through Huntingdon.

It's playing ducks and drakes with us.
I reckon it's on the 1535 KGX-LDS (ran fast through PBO).

I give up!
Just gone through Grantham, Newark and Retford non-stop.
Doesn't correspond to anything in the timetable...
Another test run?

Reached York at 1724 after a fast non-stop run from KGX (left c1535), overtaking several other EC services en route.
Now heading north at speed, still off timetable.
Is it an extra service?

The GPS signal seems more erratic than previously, with big leaps in position now and again after seemingly being stopped for a minute or two.
This is in open country and nothing to do with tunnels etc.

And no I haven't got anything better to do today than electronic train-watching...

Reached Edinburgh at 1952 having called at York, Darlington and Newcastle. 4h17m.
Still not on NRES live boards.

And now off to Glasgow, about half an hour behind the 1500 ex KGX...!

Now heading for Glasgow, and presumably Polmadie.

I wonder if the current set on KGX-GLC has something wrong, and so "our" set is needed for the early morning GLC-KGX tomorrow? Hell of a long way to run ECS!

EDIT: of course, we're assuming it's an entire set. Could it just be a DVT hooked up to a 67 (i.e. something that's capable of power it) for whatever reason?

EDIT2: Now (9.15pm) sitting in platform 2 of Glasgow Central. The signal is coming from the south end of the platform, so it's most likely a full set. I'd expect it to be heading for Polmadie soon.

EDIT3: And now sitting in Polmadie.

Left Edinburgh today (Saturday) on the 0830 to KGX.
Must have worked empty from Polmadie or formed an extra from GLC.
The regular 0650 GLC-KGX forms the 0800 ex EDB and is on time further south.

I suspect that for some reason there is a 30min time delay on the feed, and suggest that the train ran the 1201 York to Kings Cross and 1500 Kings Cross to Glasgow yesterday and is operating the 0650 Glasgow to Kings Cross now.

I don’t think that they would run a 450 mile empty stock movement on a Friday (and its’ not 1970 so they couldn’t run a relief, as much as they would like to!). I don’t think they could run it at 1535 departure on a 4m20s schedule to Edinburgh without totally disrupting the rest of the timetable.

It also looked like the live departure board had the 0830 Edinburgh departing Newcastle before it arrived on the onboard map. It also looked like it stopped at Durham, so it may be worth checking whether it also stops at Doncaster, Newark and Peterborough

The map could do with a bit of updating....the Allington chord isn't even shown, so what will happen if this unit has to take the joint line later today as part of the ECML diversions?

Interesting.......

Then it will appear as if the train has started running through fields rather than the railway

An interesting possibility. Yesterday's train did have a remarkably clear path!
I would say it did not seem to stop at Berwick yesterday (though the signal was very juddery at the time), while the 1500 would have done.
I didn't follow it south today after Edinburgh.
Keeps us on our toes anyway...

Currently following 1N33

Hi Andy, I've never understood these headcodes and what services they refer to. Is there a website somewhere where I could look up this service?

I missed today's movements but thought we were following a 225 set. When did we switch to a HST set?

Cheers :)

I'd guess that Andy is actually on 1N33, which is why he's watching it ;)

Headcodes (or train reporting numbers to use their modern name) for East Coast services are here - http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/72481/response/179018/attach/5/May 11 ECML SX WTT.PDF.pdf

Thanks Mark. I must admit I'm a little rusty about today's railway scene. I lost touch in 1983 and have just recently rediscovered an interest through the internet. There's been a lot of changes since back then and I've got a lot of catching up to do. However, I've been very impressed with this program that Ben has provided us with and I'd like to say thanks to Ben!!

Well, our GPS signal is (2317 Sat) approaching Newark from the Lincoln direction.
I guess this means it's a 225 which has been diverted round the turnip fields from Peterborough.

The only suitable train I can see on NRES is the 2000 KGX-NCL which actually left NNG at 2307.
Lends credence to the idea that we may have a delay on the live feed.
Bit like the Stock Exchange prices, where they are delayed 15 minutes unless you pay for the live feed!

EDIT - the GPS train just left NNG northbound at 2329, or 22min after the NRES report. Be interesting to see if this differential keeps constant.

I'm not on the service, just viewing it from the map and LDB screen ;)

Am I watching the same service. It's just been stopped a little north of Wakefield Westgate station and is now powering ahead at 104.9mph towards Leeds. It could be time delayed by 30 minutes on the 1930 KGX-LDS?

Well that kills the idea it was delayed data for the 2000 KGX-NCL!
Currently sat at Neville Hill.
It's more difficult to match it to the timetable at weekends with all the engineering works.

Update 0956: GPS heading south towards Doncaster.
Might be on the 0905 LDS-KGX, with signal delayed 30 mins.
We'll soon see.
