No Cardiff Valley trains using Cardiff Central during weekend. Briefly, Rhymney and Treherbert trains running to/from Cardiff Bay. Route also closed between Central and Queen St. If anybody wants a run via Penarth Curve trains from Merthyr and Aberdare will run via City Line towards Barry.
More comprehensive details may be found on the NRE Website in "Future Engineering Works" Section.

Work relating to the new platform 8 at Cardiff Central?

--

Other major looking works from the NRE site appear to be the line between Birmingham New Street to Wolverhampton being closed, as well as Norton Bridge area

And the line east of Gidea Park on the Great Eastern being closed

Being an occasional user of WCML from Preston to Euston , i see there are various closures between Crewe and Birmingham New Street with some trains diverted via Stoke. One interesting diversion is the running of Edinburgh to Birmingham New Street trains via Crewe and Shrewsbury the from Wolverhampton via Bescot.

I believe there's work going on at London Bridge and if memory serves me right that Cannon St. is shut over the easter weekend.

Which are annoyingly not open for reservations yet, as it is still unknown whether these services can run due to the problems at Lamington! Fingers crossed :)

I have heard that all VT Route Learning in connection with the Shrewsbury
diversion has been cancelled. Reason not known.

According to RTT, the Route Learning trips for Preston drivers between Crewe and Shrewsbury resume next week. I would assume that relief will take place at Shrewsbury with Wolverhampton Drivers east thereof.

Work relating to the new platform 8 at Cardiff Central?

According to Network rail, Laying new track and re-signalling between Canton in the West and Splott to the east of Cardiff Central. Could very well involve Platform 8 as I'm sure they would want to absorb the work into this Block. Strange for Network to agree to not starting work until the Saturday night because of the World Half Marathon in Cardiff

Looking at the Cardiff situation again, no trains will access Platform 4 at the east End, only in and out at West end. This perhaps suggests the installation of the new lead to access Cardiff Queen St to and from Platform 4 which is on the cards.

Anyone know why the major engineering work on the Cardiff Valley lines, causing major timetable alterations and diversions with trains avoiding CDF -- CDQ isn't starting until 9pm on Saturday 26th March and then runs until end of service on Tuesday 29th March?

With it being a holiday weekend I would've thought it would make more sense to start the work on Good Friday and have it all finished by the end of Monday 28th March so it doesn't affect people going back to work.

There's no major events on in Cardiff on Good Friday or Saturday from what I can find that would cause NR to want to delay starting the work???

The question was more why Sat evening until Tuesday evening, not Fri-Mon given it's a four day weekend. The answer is The World Half Marathon on the Saturday in Cardiff.

Whilst it's not far to walk, this will cause big problems on the Tuesday morning.

And possibly there aren't the staff available on the Friday night/ Saturday day?
Plus a lot of people now work Good Friday and have the Tuesday off instead.

I may be travelling on the 08.09 XC service from MAN to BHM on Easter Sunday and I'm just wondering if I've got this right because the wording on their site is a little confusing.

The first XC train from MAN usually runs via Crewe but can't at Easter because it would mean going via Alsager, which XC don't do.

It will run via Macclefield, Stoke and Stone to Rugeley where it will reverse back up to Stafford.
It reverses again at Stafford and runs south via Penkridge but avoids Wolverhampton and runs via Bescot into Birmingham.

Is that correct?

Cross Country do run via Alsager, perhaps to retain diversionary route knowledge:-

Possibly, although I'll wager that the half marathon is a bigger factor.

Network Rail wouldn't close the line on the Tuesday which is a regular working day for most people unless they had to.

The Works were planned long ago, at least 12 weeks, so any staff issues wouldn,t have been known then. Half Marathon the reason, Network Rail do not always give in to events.

In the media (Walesonline) that works not starting in Cardiff until 2100 Saturday due to World Half Marathon, so there's the answer.

Have read in press that track is to be laid in Platform 8 during the Easter Works at Cardiff and connected at the East End (Wueen St end) of the station. The West end will be connected during an occupation in October. Haven't got a commissioning date yet unless it's done in October.

I you thought the overcrowding out of Euston/Kings Cross was bad yesterday then it would appear it's chronic today with amended services across the network due to works. Reduced West Coast frequency appears to be worst for this this morning.

Could have done with running a modified plan, Three trains to / from Edinburgh in some hours (similar to Saturday or Sunday) and hourly to Leeds all day. The twitter complaints have been strong.
