Even at times the Crewe service could do with a 3 car but it is a case of robing peter to pay Paul. I suspect the 3 car diagrams that are now on the Liverpool's were the Lincoln ones.
I remember years of single car Class 153s on the Crewe.. the service is definitely better even with 2 cars..Are 3 car 170s still working the Worksops?

The Bus fare from Chaddesden/Spondon to Derby return is £6.00 and the Train fare from Spondon to Derby return is £4.40, that is cheaper than the Bus
But how many want to walk up Station Road?

Skegness, Worksop and Liverpool's they are normally found on and sometimes a morning peak Matlock service.

However how more frequent is the bus compared to the train, and if the bus has the advantage of dropping off the punters in Derby city centre rather than at the station?
But let's say you wanted M&S in Derbion. The distance may not be much different

About three minutes extra from the railway station I make it. So it's really going to be more about how close to the station you are at the other end of your journey.

Anyhow I expect to use the enhanced Attenborough service occasionally, but for me the Cleethorpes direct service will be most welcome - if it does turn out to be hourly as opposed to every two hours with alternate services terminating at Lincoln, which I'm not sure is clear yet.

There is a plan to enhance the walk from the station to Derbion, suggesting some building demolition from opposite the station.. At least the walk is mostly flat.

It certainly needs ‘enhancing’ it’s not a pleasant walk to/from the City Centre especially of an evening with some dubious looking characters lurking around…!

Yes, but much improved since the days it was all terraced houses with brick pavements and the houses that had drainpipes that emptied across the pavements.. Last time I walked it, there wasn't more than one beggar and it was too hot for the drug dealers I usually go a different route, not via the shops that sells high strength alcohol mind.

I've had much worse walks from station to town centre, I find the largely traffic-free walk via Midland Place and Castleward Boulevard quite civilised.

Anyhow, I guess we're wandering off-topic a bit here!

I know the actual timetable hasn't been published yet, but are the stopping trains between Leicester and Nottingham likely to remain at the same / similar time to the current times?
Similar to now.
My understanding is that all trains will run to Cleethorpes - what is unclear is if the service will move to hourly or remain at 1 train every 2 hours. It really needs to be hourly now.

Cleethorpes is 1 per two hours, roughly.

That is a pity. I know franchises are dead but I hoped that commitment wasn’t forgotten about. It is too busy for the current level of service. Especially at Market Rasen where on Saturday mornings people darent use the train as you frequently can’t physically get on.

I suppose with an hourly service you also risk increasing patronage by more than double as well! Which I'd argue is a good thing, but there isn't the fleet to accommodate that. In reality all former 2 car services really needed to be replaced by a 3 car 170 minimum. A 156 to a 170 is a reduction in seating capacity, more so with the new refurb.

It wasn’t that long since EMR was really a 153 railway. I was going to say how did it cope. We all know it didn’t.

I never had more than 150 people on a single 153 on the Crewe line. People made new friends getting up close and personal.. Some couldn't get off at intermediate stations and had to go to Crewe and get off on the way back.

The only 3 car 170s likely to be released in the distant future would be those with Northern, often on Hull or Harrogate or Scotland. If they had a solution for Southern their 171s could move .

It was interesting. You earned your money as a traincrew finding innovative ways to squeeze people in on busy trains, and of course there was all the fun of the fair when they broke down and needed rescuing. I still miss them though!

There's a video on YouTube somewhere from about 2008 which summed the era up - a single 153 wobbling into Nottingham from the East, clearly absolutely packed with very obviously a load of passengers sat on the secondman's desk in the front cab with all the windows open - people in the front cab became a firm no of course but it wasn't unusual until probably COVID for the guard to shut the door across the driving controls in the back cab and wedge themselves at the door panel with the cab full of passengers or luggage - definitely no announcements. The driver's cab was also on occasion used as an extra luggage rack with the driver shut in by the door.

A bonkers way to run a railway but the 153 era in the East Midlands persisted for not far off 30 years.

Could get a fair few in the toilets too, but rarely room to shut the door.

I have had the pleasure of a journey in the 2nd Cab of a 153. Amazed how full those things were loaded. Probably to levels they would never have accepted in the former NSE routes in terms of passengers per coach.

Surprised they didn't take a few seats out to create more standing room. Wasn't the seating capacity 75? I remember one evening a woman got on and said "Well this is a small train. Have you left part of it behind? But then, a 153 wasn't the smallest train..

I guess for a staff point of view, the 170s are better when crush loaded compared to sprinters solely due to having their own crew door.

Unless it involves short platforms

Yes it was 75. You hoped that you didn’t get the toilet end. The other end had the 3 fold up seats to create more room. Very thought we would reminisce one of the worse trains to be created. I feel that apart from the Barton line all EMR routes should be hourly. (Not so sure about Gainsborough- Doncaster but with decent connections it may get reasonable loads)

Back to the 2025 recast, I hope the connection times at Sleaford will be reduced for Lincoln to Boston/Skegness journeys. Typically 50 minutes now when travelling towards the cost but a bit beter on the return leg.

I understand this will be an improvement. Along with Cleethorpes trains actually connecting with LNER at Lincoln. If the service remains 1x 2car train every other hour - this may not be a good idea of course.

Personally, I would make even the Barton line hourly as it might generate more usage compared to the 2 hourly service it has now. Especially if you have commuters working in Grimsby where the 17:07 is too early for them to catch back to one of the villages served by the Barton train.

Are there going to be any noticeable retimings of routes like Liverpool to Cleethorpes due to knock-on effects of EMR and ECML changes?

I was sat at a table in the middle, going to the last station.

Well I do remember it was hourly at one brief point (some time ago now), and it obviously didn't generate enough extra usage then. If EMR had a spare unit that 'could' operate the additional diagram it would probably be better employed elsewhere.

I think the last time it was hourly was pre-privatisation. I agree I remember it hourly myself. When the 155s were having the door issues they took ½ units off the route to cover for the 155s.

You would need a second unit to do that. Can't imagine EMR have enough units especially when needing to run more units on the Liverpool to Nottingham section. Also the full service is yet to be restored on the Norwich to Nottingham section, so higher priorities.
