Well, they need some trains for starters. I believe there’s a further three week shutdown in August, presumably to liven up and test the wires?
The plan seems to be to use existing stock so that’s not a delaying factor. Apart from tying the wires in, testing, approvals and possibly some training I don’t know what’s left to do. There must be something I’m missing to fit in between now and December.

There doesn't seem to have been much mention about East Kilbride station since the line reopened. Has the new station there also opened or is it still a platform + construction site?

Network rail are to close off Strawhill Road in Clarkston again starting sometime 06/09/2025 - 05/12/2025, for 3 working days. Reason is "Excavation on c/way to investigate water ingress onto railway below"

Possibly something to do with the road surface?

Lifts still not working in Giffnock and no obvious activity on the site. Meanwhile, at Clarkston wasn't there meant to be some kind of access ramp to the library car park? It looks like something has been done there but it's all fenced off.

I believe there’s another three week shutdown next month? Might be when these issues get addressed.

Clarkston Platform ramp to the Library Car Park has been completed for weeks now by Story and NR. Main problem is who is responsible for what. There is no proper safe walking surface to the actual car park. Appears there is a lot of sorting out to be done. Ownership of land, building cost, responsibility for upkeep &. maintenance, planning consent etc etc. Could be a long time coming before the gates to and from the platform are finally unlocked

Barrhead was electrified and has just one electric per hour, plus one diesel to/from Kilmarnock. Weren't there supposed to be two, with the Kilmarnocks running fast? I assume the reason was shortage of electric stock.

The service reduction was part of the Fit for the Future timetable, which also got rid of the 4tph service to Ayr and to Gourock.

At least the service wasn't reduced at electrification, it had already been reduced.

The evening service on the East Kilbride branch is still hourly which I find crazy for one of the busiest lines in Glasgow.

It has surprised me that with electrification, the half hourly Barrhead locals were not restored, allowing all the Kilmarnocks to run fast between Barrhead and Glasgow Central. The Kilmarnock service is two per hour but the all-stations trains are not exactly fast and the stopping pattern means that departures from Central are not 30 minutes apart but around 15 and then 45.

The evening service on the East Kilbride branch is still hourly which I find crazy for one of the busiest lines in Glasgow.

That is strange, and disappointing, especially when other routes such as the nearby Neilston branch have had their full evening service restored. Perhaps it will come for East Kilbride when the EMUs start running?

The other disappointment is how many of them are two car. The introduction of EMUs will force an increase in capacity.

Veering back onto topic, the wires have been up for some time. What project activities are taking place that means they can’t be made live and put to use?

At Giffnock today and the Lifts ARE WORKING BY THEMSELVES. DON'T GET TOO EXCITED You can't use them. They have been put INTO TEST MODE to accumulate shake down hours. Up and down with the doors opening and closing. After the required hours have been successfully completed there will be a further set of Load Tests. So the hours to completion are coming down. The AMCO Compound was being dismantled and a road sweeper was doing the necessary to many of the parking bays. Looking like the 1st week of the Glasgow Fair for final competition.

The lifts are now open to the public.

Just as aside, there is an opportunity to bag some rare track on those weekends as the Carlisle services are routed via a reversal Polmadie thence via the Larkfield Spur to Muirhouse South Junction.
As an aside, why only Carlisle/Dumfries doing this and not other services via Barrhead as has happened in the past?

I read that both carparks at Hairmyres are finished and open. Is that correct?

I’d surmise lack of capacity and/or route knowledge. At some point, not electrifying this will come back to bite people who weren’t involved in the decision.

I don't understand why such a short section was left un-electrified!

This is correct. The car park on the north side of the station opened within the last week, though I am unable to give an exact date.

Interesting to note the Scotrail tender for new rolling stock has been published: https://www.find-tender.service.gov.uk/Notice/038622-2025

ScotRail Trains Limited (SRT) Market Engagement Notice

SRT is launching a market engagement exercise in relation to its proposed procurement for the replacement of some of its aging Diesel and Electric Multiple Units with a new fleet of Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) and Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMUs). The proposed procurement is planned for 2025-2027, with initial deliveries expected by late 2031, subject to approval from Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government.

It is anticipated that under a Manufacturing and Supply Agreement (MSA) the core order will be for approximately 69 units, potentially comprising around 41 EMUs and 28 BEMUs. There may also be a requirement for additional option orders, although this will be clarified as part of any Contract Notice.
