Yes it is!

The 91s were built marginally before the mk4s, so to make use of the 91s, mk3s plus a hst powercar were used, the hst powercars used were the ones that were fitted with buffers and they acted as DVTs.

look under 'buffered units'

although this is only as reliable as Wiki generally is.

it was more an observation that HSTs seem to run the Newcastle or Edinburghs

Its true, they do, but these are diagrams in between Hull/ Skipton/ Harrogate/ Inverness/ Aberdeen turns.

Since Hull/ Skipton are both morning peak/ evening peak only (and Harrogate is morning peak only), the diesel power needed for them is needed to do other things in between times.

East Coast could give up on Hull/ Skipton/ Harrogate (since Hull Trains already provide a number of Hull services), which would simplify things greatly (keeping all diesel haulage on the Inverness/ Aberdeen trips), but I can't see that happening.

Cheers, I remember now the 89 pulling such a train & 43 modded with buffers in case it failed or something :).

The 89 wasn't built with TDM. TDM was still in development with BR and Plessey when the 89 was built. It was added circa 1988.

The powercar was there to supply ETS to the train. You'll see in most early shots the 89 always topped the train. Once the TDM had been commissioned there was limited running with the 89 and surrogate DVT.

The surrogate DVTs saw further use with the 91s as mentioned above. Initially the powercars were purely there as a DVT and ETS supply. It was identified that this caused oil build up in the exhaust, which lead to some exhaust fires. Additionally there was carbon dust build up in the traction motors which increased the likelihood of flashover when the powercar was used conventionally. So, the end result of the surrogate DVT supplying ETS and traction which lead to some lively performance!

But the HST's used for this were modified, and fitted with TDM equipment. This has been removed from any examples that were so fitted.

Tenner says it wont happen, its just someone in the Dft trying to get up Virgins nose, and doing a good job of it.

I think I've now seen enough info to convince me otherwise. Having known last week that people at the top of EC/DOR had given it the all clear, reading this morning with VRGs reluctance to fund the Operator Safety Case, DfT aren't going to give them the time of day.

On a side note, middle of September sees a Pendolino being repainted into Alstom colours - no idea why. Probably some sleazy press move.

Thanks for clearing up my original post, however the point still stands that it is possible for a powercar to act as a DVT with addition of the TDM equipment?

You are talking about some very extensive & expensive modifications. It also depends what push - pull system the loco at the other end is fitted with. Some are TDM, some only rely on RCH jumpers.

Theoretically possible, but not so in the real world. There's no spare HST's for a start!

Could you not do the same with a Class 67 and a class 91?

I suppose it could, but would it be worthwhile as the 67s are dead heavy so it might slow the train down quite a bit :?
