East Boldon loop

Does this loop ever get used? Pass it everyday but have never seen anything in there.

Don't think there are any servces that are timetabled to use it (no Metros AFAIK use the loop to get out of the way of Northern/GC trains, even though it is electrified). Doesn't appear to have been used in a while either as the surface looks rusty on the top of the rail.

Would it be more useful once they've reinstated the east/south chord at the junction? I believe that is on NR's plans again.

It was in the lastest RUS, which would make it a hell of a lot easier to send freight along the Durham Coast line (which was the main reason for the resignalling in the first place). Goes to say that when more freight is sent along the route, the loop will be handy to allow a freight to be overtaken by a Middlesbrough train or a Metro.
