It was your career choice, don't go blaming him...
it's not just the shifts, there's so many things I'd lose, if you get 50 or 60k for freight driving its because of all the s**t you have to put up with, that is, flexible start/finish times, unable to get AL when you want it, lots of very long distance drives (compared to short distance trips around a Depot!), uncomfortable working conditions, the fair share of bad/boring diagrams, time spent on the road car driving, management ready to do you for anything, the amount of time you have to spend sat down, the fatigue at work and during time off, the loss of varied tasks and duties. Then there's the fact that the job is much more taxing than MDD. It doesn't take a genius to work it out does it ?
Let's put things right once and for all - there are hundreds of visitors to this section of the forum and I'd hate to think some were put off applying for drivers vacancies because of your ill-advised, inaccurate and downright untruthful and biased ramblings.
1.
you get 50 or 60k for freight driving its because of all the s**t you have to put up with
No.
It's the going rate for a professional job with all the responsibility that it comes with.
Interesting you use the word 's**t' - only your role actually involves contact with that
2.
flexible start/finish times, unable to get AL when you want it, lots of very long distance drives (compared to short distance trips around a Depot!)
Yes, no and so what?
Are you telling us you don't work to a variable roster?
You are?
There's your flexible start/finish times then.
AL is no problem at 90% of companies - you lot can't all have the same day off and leave zero staff to cover the job. Guess what, other TOC's are exactly the same.
You must be in a minority of one if you honestly think being stuck to 1/4 mile of track constantly is actual a positive!
3.
uncomfortable working conditions,
Eh?
Air conditioned cabs for the summer, heaters for the winter, handwipes and bottled water 'on tap', air cushioned ergonomic seating with lumbar, neck and head support fully adjustable...
Perhaps you're wrong on that point too.
4.
the fair share of bad/boring diagrams,
Bad?
As in 'long hours'?
They're GOOD - more hours per shift = less shifts per week = lots of time off.
Boring?
Where to start with that?!
Tell you what, all I'll say on that little nugget is this:
Please define 'boring' (considering the mind-numbing repetitiveness your role involves...)
5.
the amount of time you have to spend sat down
Got me!
That's the issue with driving I'm afraid.
6.
the fatigue at work and during time off,
Wrong.
You're paid a professionals wage to act (and live) professionally. If that's an issue, stick to the shed.
A 35 hour/ 4 day week with lots of long weekends, weeks of RD's linked and generous AL (that you can get no matter what you've heard :roll

goes a long way to keep fatigue at bay.
How you behave and live your life before taking duty goes a long way too.
The last little bit that helps me is knowing I won't be stuck making the same monotonous shunts at 5mph and turning the same points for the entire shift/month/career!
Fatigue would be a MAJOR issue if, lets say, an MDD worked all the hours God sends to get within 80% of a mainline drivers basic salary...
7.
It doesn't take a genius to work it out does it ?
No.
Nor does it take a genius to admit that there's a little fudging going on here.
If you ever make it to mainline as a freight driver I'd expect you'd have the good grace to admit that you were wrong.
I've done your job regularly in the past (as have many other fully-qualified drivers on various fora) and you've been told on numerous occasions that posts such as above are folly and bear no resemblance to reality.
Please, start listening to people with real experience of both sides rather than guessing.
bar some of the "characters" I have to work with from time to time (Just throwing a negative in to add some balance).
And I'm sure they speak highly of you.
If you think that's 'balance' of any shape or form I suggest you go get a fitter to look at your fulcrum dear boy...
