A photo on wnxx shows 37069 is also outside with 47747 with not much work being done on 37069

I was in a bit of rush, but if I had time I would have put the link to the photo on.
Some DRS News  57302 will be out on the Holyhead drag tommorow, and this won't be the end. DRS are stealing some of the Virgin 57/3s because they have picked up the WCML thunderbird contract :D.

Thanks, Sam

I wouldn't say Stealing, just switching loco providers. Interestingly, it seems that this was a First Group idea initially using DRS's 57/3s & laterally 68s. No doubt the staffing will remain the same (as per EC & GA where EC drivers sign the 67s & GA drivers sign the thunderbird 47s).

I was being a bit flexible with the word "stealing". Just to say that they won't be regarded as Virgin's anymore, in a way. Good news though, just hopefully the names stay :)

The stand-by turns and dragging will still be done by Virgin drivers but using locos sourced from DRS much the same as when we used EWS 47's, 86's etc.

Incidentally 57302 was a failure this morning for the Holyhead drag, it wouldn't start !

Then 311 stepped in and after having problems at Rhyl on the outward, the return from Holyhead is caped!

Good job it's going over to a Voyager in a few weeks then...

I tried to catch that train (1507 BNG-EUS) and we were told over than tannoy at 1447 to get the 1453 ATW service to Chester instead.

Looking at this, it shows it will be 221 operated from Dec 15 onwards (despite keeping to the same timings with the long wait at Crewe):
http://www.opentraintimes.com/schedule/C56164/2012/12/8 - drag
http://www.opentraintimes.com/schedule/P50693/2012/12/15 - 221

Although the 0850 EUS-HHD is shown as being operated as a 390 both before and after the timetable change, I am sure this is wrong as it is kinda wrong now anyway (see 1438 HHD-EUS drag - operated by EMU + Loco).

If DRS are providing Locos for whoever operates the WCML, what will happen to 57307/08/11/13/14/15/16 (Virgin's locos)? Will DRS take them on or will VT keep them for whatever reason?

The lease would probably be switched over to DRS, or subleased from VT to DRS - which would probably leave the locos in VT livery.

But only 3 are still in VT colours, 57313-16 are in various de-branded Arriva Train Wales colour schemes.

Candidates for gaining DRS livery then? I think for now it's going to be a case of waiting and seeing. Still, First Group Blue would look nice on them. ;)

:o Why?! Are they being replaced by ex-VT 57/3s, or are they just old?

Adam :D

Probably because in short, their knackered. After all, most of them would have had a fairly hard life before EWS Days, then there's the EWS Treatment (or lack of), then several years in open storage, probably hasnt done them any good. Then you have to think about spares aswell, so the better idea is to reduce the fleet to what you need, scrap the scrap cond ones and keep the usuable parts.

And then of course, there is the influx of 57/3s, slow increase in the 47 fleet & the soon to arrive Class 68s.

Several coaches have been moved from Barrow Hill to Crewe this week.

Mooted for the Glo-ex jobs it seems. Would any of these be the former 'Forest of Toton' Mk2s by any chance? Hope DRS decides to keep them in Blue Grey though, especially if they are to use them in the Spot hire / Touring market aswell.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does glo-ex stand for?

It's the nickname applied to the Carlisle to Sellafield service to be jointly operated by DRS & Northern Rail.

http://www.rail.co.uk/rail-news/2012/loco-hauled-cumbrian-coast-commuter-services/

Loco-hauled Cumbrian Coast Commuter Service

Rail Commuting Capacity has been boosted by British Nuclear Fuels, the major employers at Sellafield, for their Nuclear workforce by their fully owned subsidiary, Direct Rail Services who have commenced regular passenger services. dubbed ‘The Glow-ex’

Direct Rail Services Joins Forces with Northern Rail to Operate a New Four Car Service

Previously, a large gap in the timetable for this Cumbrian Coast line meant that workers could arrive from the Carlisle direction at 10:11, and from the south, a little earlier. The new service provides an arrival time from the Carlisle direction at 07:55 – a vast improvement – as well as opening up new business, commuting and educational opportunities from those along the northern stretch of the line.

The train, dubbed ‘The Glow-ex’, is anticipated to be worked by Class 37 locomotives, at present either 37409 “Lord Hinton” or 37423 “Spirit of the Lakes”, although other motive power will be able to deputise. The coaching stock is formed of former “Anglia Railways” Mark 2 coaches, in a distinctive teal livery. The train allows us to reminisce of the “Flood Ex” trains which DRS ran after bridges and roads were cut off in the region a couple of years ago which served a new station at Workington North.

DRS, despite having its own Driver and Guard on the train, a Northern Rail conductor is also on hand to sell tickets from the National Rail linked sales machines. Initial results from the service appear to have been promising, with a mixed combination of enthusiasts, Sellafield staff and other rail passengers for the area all taking advantage of the train.

Interestingly, the service has four carriages, which is either quadruple or double the usual capacity provided on the line but this provides the ‘brake force’ required so trains can run at line-speeds. Trains are normally formed by Class 142 “Pacer” (notoriously claimed to be Britain’s most uncomfortable train) or a Class 153 nicknamed “Dogbox” - because it is a tiny one-car train!

Direct Rail Services service the coaches and locomotives at their Kingmoor depot, where a number of additional “37/4s” are being prepared for a main line return.

Oh, does this mean the end for the Anglia Mark 2s then?

I doubt it, I saw 12 Anglia liveried carriages storming through Wigan a fortnight ago behind a skip working an ECS from Inverness to Crewe. Was a nice sight to see all matching coaching stock, well except for a brown and cream kitchen car...

I'm fairly sure that article is from the original test runs earlier in the year.

EDIT: Looks like it is all blue and grey so far...

It was, and with Direct Rail Services purchase of up to 20 / 24 odd Ex Cargo D Mk2s & 2 DBSOs in Eastleigh, will mean the end of the hire in Riviera Anglian set.

The Anglia Railways set used on the "Glo-ex" test run will still stay in existence. In fact it is owned by Riviera Trains and will continue to see use on charters. As for the Blue & Grey coaches, it wouldn't surprise if me if the gained DRS colours :(

Also, if there are any mistakes. Please let me know, I have been a little out of the picture with trains the past week with other things on my mind.

Thanks, Sam

Whoever came up with the dig at the usual traction in the press release want shooting (not literally) as the usual traction on the route is class 156 or admittedly the occasional 153, 142s only make the odd appearance there but must most peak times are 156s and I believe there is one strengthened set buthas to run some of the way with a set locked out due to platform lengths

DRS bought DBSOs? Where are they intending to use them or are they just for spares for normal mark2s, and do they already have any (I think there are 6 that are not with Network Rail, so who has them)?

Presumably it'll mean the Glow - Ex runs with a loco & DBSO. Most of DRS's Loco's are fitted with Blue Star multi working for the various Network Rail test train jobs, so it's possible to mod the Mk2s & DBSO.

As for who owns the rest of the DBSO fleet - B-A-R-S. Presumably purchased for this long vaunted Okehampton to Exeter St James's Park service - DCR 31, mk2s & DBSO. Although now that it's been included into the next GW Franchise, will probably now not be going ahead with BARS.

Thanks, I assume the DBSOs that aren't with Network Rail don't have blue star at the moment so work will need to be done, but what does BARS stand for? Would the new Great Western franchise be likely to carry forward the idea of using mark2s though, or would they get additional units or wait until the wires are up to cascade the 16x units?

British American Railroad /Railway Services / DCR.

Blue star wise on the DBSOs - think your right as i beleive most of them are still fitted with TDM for working with the 86s.

As for the Okehampton services being incorporated into the GW Franchise - tha'll be using DMUs. FGW already operate a summer sunday only service up from St James's Park to Okehampton & return, and the route is currently being used for skid pan training by FGW so there's no issues of tying up a unit or two to those services - indeed this new service looks set to run down to Axminster anyway as a cross devon metro service.

Supposedly this is the plan. Apparently we will eventually see 3 sets doing 2 returns per day between Carlisle and Barrow.

Will be time to build more houses in Cumbria for the mass movement of enthusiasts:lol:
