Here in Bolton it hasn't rained for...oooh, hours now. Keep reading countrywide there are already low reservoirs and possible restrictions.

What's it like where you are? I don't think we have had a sustained period of dry weather for years, but spring is the driest season and add to that the stiff breezes we've had and there's plenty of evaporation too.

Just looked at the lawn, bone dry but there aren't any cracks on a length like there were in 1976!

Frequently the warmest place in Britain due to the foehn effect! Some areas are also almost the driest parts. It's been glorious in the west too recently.

Rain: Nil points, and it's been like that for about 3 weeks now.

Sun: Un point. Lovely today and every other day it is. Even days that start dull end up sunny.

We could do with a big downpour though. Just the one and then sun for the foreseeable would be good.

Interestingly, that river had water in it again before the rain yesterday!

There's still water on the east side of the bridge, where there was once a gravel pit, being retained by a small weir on the upstream side of the bridge. But I've not seen yet any water on the section of the river bed on the west side of the bridge that is in my photographs. There are local rumours that the dryness is due to abstraction by farmers upstream......

Here in sunny Hertfordshire, 2 to 3 hours rain in the last 8 or so weeks. Basically bone dry.

I work as a gardener. Nothing is growing and the lawns are turning brown. My reason for having a week off and buying a rail rover last week.

A red sky tends to indicate where the warmer air is; if the wind is in the west it will bring the warmer air towards you and hence the saying is correct for the prevailing winds. However, if we have an east wind then the saying works in reverse.

One caveat is that the warmer air is not always the clearer, drier air... It only has to be clear enough in the general direction to allow enough sunlight through to refract into the reds...

Not at all.

Most of the time in the UK the wind is from the west which means most of the time the saying is valid.
