Hope you got a decent payment to use them unless it was part of your latest pay deal.

Why would you want more pay for reading something from an iPad rather than a wad of papers…..? Doesn’t it simply make life easier for everyone?

At MTR we now book on using an app on the iPad. To be honest, I think paper WONs etc are better as you physically pick it up and read it. They did have a way of checking if you read them, but they seem to have stopped that now.

Depends what you define as 'easier'. A paper copy of a WON, PON, document or Route Map doesn't need to be charged and doesn't have to be used in accordance with a mobile electronic equipment policy or similar.

It is an offence to have mobile phones turned on in the driving cab, yet Tocs are reliant on the driver having a company mobile phone.

The company I used to work for, had used some far-from reliable apps for tasks such a timesheets, booking on/off.
Therefore many phone calls to IT support to fix errant operations of the apps ( when not on duty / not being paid )IT will advise delete and re-install from scratch.
E-mail is God's Gift to office paper shuflers, those shufflers sending e-mails at all times of the day or week requesting reports/explaanations (again not on duty) , easy for them, 30-seconds to compose an e-mail , 30 minutes of work for us responding, and it makes them look oh-so productive "busy-work".
Another trick is sending trick phishing e-mails, you opened the e-mail , you should have guessed it is a trap, now you have to sit an online company training course "On-line security awareness"

I'm sure others will have their tales.

We’ve been over this many times on various threads. It’s a new technology payment agreed between unions and management as per agreements for change of working practices.

My employer absolutely loves the phishing test emails.
Threats of redundancies going off last year, people seriously worried for their jobs, and IT were constantly sending out phishing emails. Even if you forwarded the emails to the IT help email (as they wanted you to), they would still say you’ve replied to a phishing email and need retraining…

We don’t get issued phones at TFW, guards do but not drivers. I struggle to see a reason to get given one if you are issued a tablet.

Am I right in thinking you guys have an electronic track diagram, roughly equivalent to the UK sectional appendix, which you can access on the move?

Yes, a most of it is accessible offline, the rest can be accessed online. Except for a few pieces of paper like the license and some checklists, all you need is the iPad. The mobile phone provides a limited amount of fallback.

Why does the introduction of technology that makes life so much easier require extra payment? This is why reforms are need to the railway industry.
Can't be bothered to go through all this again. Reform wont be happening any time soon.

Genuine question, do you work on the railway? If so, what job?
Just curious as to the various opinions is all.

I thought mobile phones and presumably tablets are not allowed in cabs, so how does this work? How and when can you use these tablets?

Switched off or even silent and tucked away in a bag in the cab is fine for some TOCs (normally those with heavy DOO operation).

Drivers can also be issued company mobile phones which is good if they need to be contacted whilst passing/during disruption/on spare or turned on when leaving the cab to deal with a fault/issue of some sort. Usage can be permitted (and in fact encouraged) during those occasions.

Sounds like you needed that training course, then...

Root-cause performance analysis is not "paper-shuffling" or "productive busy-work". Nobody is suggesting you do reports outside of your duty. I'd love to know why it takes you "30 minutes work" to reply.

And yes clicking on random links is probably a sign you could do with some digital security guidance...

Because it also saves money for the company. It doesn't seem unreasonable to expect that employees enjoy a share of that saving, especially when they've not had a pay rise for 5 years against approx 30% inflation.

Personally that's not an opinion I necessarily hold, but each to their own.

It's completely unreasonable. The employee is there to deliver the company's business requirements. They are not entitled to - nor should they get - a share on any savings the company may make as a result of its investment in new technology. I'm afraid this is just the sort of "Spanish practice" that the railway has that needs removing - I've never known it occur in any other industry that I have been involved in, despite the continuous march of technology.

WMT drivers get Samsung tablets. Can’t remember when mine last worked, let alone got turned on. Get what i need on my phone. Obviously nothing electronic can be used in the cab! A fairly pointless exercise and cost in my opinion.
I think they got a "technology payment" to take them on, but there was no agreement as to what would actually go on them. WMT Drivers don't have company phones now either, they used to have them.

Now the company is talking about replacing the old tablets because they are obsolete.

indeed
in any other organisation including the NHS , a change in technology like this would not attract a review of the role and therefore consideration of the Job sevaluation scoring / pay grade unless there was a notablre change in the way the job was performed that would impact o nthe JE score, and changing the form or a form is not that kind of change

Why does the introduction of technology that makes life so much easier require extra payment? This is why reforms are need to the railway industry.

Because it’s longstanding industry practice. Either a one off payment or linked to to pay negotiations. You could equally ask why train drivers don’t get private healthcare (or bonuses, or stock) - many people earning in the £70-£80k bracket would get that as standard.

It’s negotiable, along with many other Ts and Cs, and it makes good commercial sense for an employer to get the workforce on board with these sorts of changes. Especially when the amounts discussed often boil down to a one of payment equal to perhaps a day’s overtime for the staff involved, set against savings that continue to accumulate for the rest of time. So next to nothing, in the scheme of things.

It's completely unreasonable. The employee is there to deliver the company's business requirements. This boils down to “I don’t get it, so why should anybody else”.

And we regularly read about how the NHS is failing, with appalling staff morale.

Staff morale has little or nothing to do with unprofessional and foolish errands on trying to get extra pay for things that have no material impact on the Job Evaluation Score.

Oddly enough in the NHS and in private industry moving to things like electronic records and electronic reference books is acknowledged as a good thing, becasue you are simply carrying around one tablet / phone rather than a bag full reference texts and having to worry about have you got enough patientsreport forms, is your CPG up-to-date ... the charging thing is a bit of a red herring especially if the workplace has facilities to keep these devices charged
The NHS staff Morale issue is to do with real impact on Job evaluation scores , where , in Nursing in particular, the JE scheme is ignored by management when grading new roles ( other roles havign won the battle with the move to Band 6 on completion of New Qualified period )
