What’s the rule regarding books and newspapers?

There are far too many enthusiasts with cameras to sit and read with books or newspapers. But a rulebook and route maps are appropriate materials for a live cab.
If you’ve got time to read a book or newspaper, I’d recommend a back cab or on the cushions in passenger trains.

Heard of a driver on a large western operator who nearly lost their job due to a newspaper related incident; but were exonerated from any wrongdoing while driving because they were blinded by the sun and using it to shield their eyes from excessive sunshine.
Traction were all immediately retrofitted with better sun blinds following the incident as I understand it.

I'm not sure anyone was suggesting reading the paper whilst driving.

I'll often put my feet up and get my book out (or do the crossword if there's a paper handy) if the signaller has advised me there's going to be a bit of a wait.

I thought a copy of the Sun (the Mirror on Merseyside) leaning against the windscreen on the secondman's side was mandatory?

Scotrail policy is very strict about this too. The rule for the front cab is the "Three Ps" - no phones, no papers, no people.

I’m aware of a fatality where there was some question of whether a newspaper was being read as it was found in the 2nd man’s side. It wasn’t but after that I always moved discarded papers out of the cab.

I can guarantee that with one on the GEML several years ago. The driver told the police & entered on the report that he had ‘The Sun’ in his eyes & he did, literally!!!
