Similarly if not identically to Scania's gas double-decker. There's no doubt it could be done if the will and massive pot of cash was there to permit it.

How would they work, with tanks ect?

Do you mean like the fuel cell Merc singłe deckers used briefly in London and other Eiropean cities about a dozen years ago, with all the gubbins mounted up on the roof? I don't think anybody's seriously talking about that technology in double deckers

It's all about electric at the moment

In the late 1970s, Ribble Motor Services equipped an Atlantean with Liquified Natural Gas as an experiment. Fuel was tankered in by British Gas who would fuel up the bus on the way to an industrial customer. The tanker connection wasn't metered, which meant it wasn't possible to accurately measure fuel consumption. This was a source of frustration to the accountancy wonks at Frenchwood Avenue, who eventually asked the depot to dip the tank - one wonders what the reply was...

There are a number of fuel cell buses in service in both London and Aberdeen at the moment and Van Hool is building two more for the capital. As for electric... well, those involved with gas may dispute your point but a fuel cell bus is an electric bus. The only difference is that it generates its own electricity through the fuel cell rather than being plugged in to the mains.

That's methane, not hydrogen.

They don't /won't run on methane per se. The Nottingham buses (if they happen) will run on gas out of the mains.

What do you think "gas out of the mains" is? It's certainly not hydrogen.

I accept the point about hydrogen fuel cell being a means of on board electricity generation. Just it seems to me the way things are going, most effort is being concentrated on battery buses whether plug-in or terminus/on route charging. What London is doing with BYD and ADL seems to be a good pointer as to what the mainstream might look like in five years and Optare have announced a doubling of their EV range, though some might doubt they will still be here in five years!

James Freeman, before his move from Reading Buses to First, thought ethanol-powered doubledeckers were the answer, but he soon backtracked!
