Do Voyagers have small feet?

Is it just me or do Voyager (Class 220) wheels look too small? I know they work perfectly well but they seem ill-proportioned as compared to other classes.

They're special lightweight ones which don't have much covering their outer faces compared to most units.

The inside frame bogies make the wheels much more prominent than other stock, and the eye tends to focus on the shiny brake discs which are smaller than the wheels themselves. Also the body of the 220 is basically the same as the 221, but that has a much more chunky bogie and also needs to have enough body-bogie gap to allow for tilting. As the floor level of the two classes above rail is the same, the 220 ends up with a very big gap between the bogie and the body, which also tends to make the wheels look small.

The difference isn't as great as you might think, but, yes, the B5005 inside frame bogies fitted to the 220s have a smaller wheel diameter than is usual: 780mm, compared, for example, to the 840mm diameter of the wheels fitted to the various Sprinter classes.

Are the wheels on the class 444s a similar size?

I remember when the class 442s first came into service seeing how much smaller the wheels were on them compared with the old slam door stock

I always wondered this myself as they always looked sorta wrong to me being that size in relation to the train

I remember reading about that bogie.. Launched the same day the first 165 was handed over at York.. 24ish years ago!

Yep, the Siemens bogie is a equivalent product to the lightweight Bombardier FLEXX Eco but developed especially for the Desiro City.

220s are quicker. Not sure if that entirely to the size of the wheels though as they are considerably lighter
