disused level crossing

I think that silk mills level crossing is still there, on the Great Western main line near Taunton. Gates never opened to road traffic which now passes over a new bridge.

I think that it was/is? used for access by road/rail machines during engineering work.

Apart from a tiny bit of tarmac, there's nothing left of the original crossing - lights, barriers, road surface - all gone. As you say, however, it is now used as an access point by Network Rail.

It was still there when I lasted visited, but that must have been longer ago than I realised.

I'd guess the 2 vehicles were travelling in opposite directions.

Follow it far enough and you can see the Google car stays on the "wrong" side of the road all the way along - so yes the camera is pointing "backwards" in that shot.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it, but there are a couple in Ipswich on the old line to the docks - one at Bridge Street (A137), another on Ranelagh Road.

They were both mentioned several pages back. The Bridge Street one was visible on Goole Street view, but has been entirely removed since the Streetview pictures were taken, so I have been informed.

If you go southeast along the road and turn the camera back towards the level crossing there is a container train crossing the level crossing

Now been lifted along with the track either side if the crossing

I found one on a branch off the east coast mainline north of morpeth, can't tell if its still in use the crossing or the line.

It may not be disused but there's a crossing right next to morpeth station showing a rail missing but a class 142 stabled in the distance.

If it's the crossing on Coopie's Lane, then the 'rail missing' is an effect of the Streetview photo joining when you are on the crossing. Other viewpoints show the rails to be intact.

According to Baker's 2010 Atlas these sidings and connections are still in use. They are part of a network of freight lines connected to terminals at Blyth and other industrial plants around that part of Northumberland.

In a word "Yes." This is particularly true where tracks abut a still used line and removing signals etc will require the interlocking to be altered and completely retested before trains can move again on the still used line.

Yes I believe so, however it depends where the crossing is, for example the one over the A47 at Wisbech has been removed due to how busy the road is and the fact that NR are still liable for its maintenance, so therefore its cheaper to lift the crossing, but if you go down the back roads in the same area you cross the same railway route but the crossing is still intact

With regards to the infrastructure on the rest of the route I believe NR have to wait several years before they can lift the track,
