Many delays out there this evening for numerous reasons. ECML seems to be particularly affected at York and Darlington. And it's snowing heavily in Hull...again!

I'm getting sick of the general public. Obviously, with poor weather conditions such as this, problems with road and rail transport are to be expected. Does this stop people from being arseholes? No.

Take Tuesday night for example. Glasgow Central, Larkhall train mysteriously disapeared. A ScotRail staff member tells us on the platform that the train was supposed to pass through on it's previous journey soon because it was running very late thanks to the weather, but instead had been terminated in a High Level platform. He said this termination is due to a crew member being heavily delayed in meeting the train somewhere. Naturally, one passenger in particular gets ****y, and starts calling this delayed crew member "****ed" because (s)he [the crew member] drank so much at New Year. He does this without any reason. I understand getting a bit distressed, but to make claims like this without proper reason and when it's obvious the staf are doing everything they can to keep the trains running, it's very much uncalled for. When the staff member that informed us said he'll be up at the ticket office should anyone have any more questions, the idiot passenger, a few minutes later, claimed that the guy "probably won't be there". But he was.

Newton station, earlier that day, the 08:21 to Glasgow Central High Level broke down just short of the junction before arriving into the station. When the announcement was made, people moaned and moaned. Again, I can understand the distress (I felt it), but if they are that much in need, they should've left earlier considering the weather. That's what I've been doing all week, and I've arrived at my destinations with time to spare.

People who moan and **** like this should be banned from the world.

As an ex railway signalman who travelled from my home in Newport to book on at Cardiff during the very severe Winter of 1962/63, may I offer my heartfelt congratulations to those members of all grades of railway staff who have pulled out all the stops to report in and run a service that bears absolutely no resemblance to the network in those days!

Naturally, steam was the major prme mover in those days and it seems to me that modern diesel/electric traction units are (to a large extent) not quite up the job. I guess thats the price of progress though!

Well done everybody!!

It's always nice to feel appreciated :)

Lots of skivers this morning not travelling from Cambridge! The xx:15 and xx:45 express services to Kings cross had been dropped- the 07:xx ones of these are 12 carriages- leaving just two four carriage stopping services on that route per hour (the emergency/snow and ice timetable). I get on a Liverpool Street service (these were today running fine)- this seemed to be no busier than normal, and as we pulled out the waiting KGX stopper seemed far from full. I'd hve thought that a good 50% of people would have at least tried travel, if not more. Where on earth were they all?

This conflicts somewhat with the advice that commuters are idiots for trying to travel and then moaning when they can't get home!

I doubt any TOC wants too many people trying to get in and having to deal with their wrath when mother nature steps in to screw everything up later.

There does seem to be a lot of conflicting information, though - and that must account for many pax staying away. On the GN FCC line, the special timetable for today offers 2tph, Live Departure Boards says all GN services are cancelled, and customer services says the're a bus replacement service. What are pax supposed to believe?

The FCC live boards appear to have the emergency timetable superimposed on the normal one, & then showing all services from the normal timetable as cancelled.
On the screens at Letchworth station at 7:15 this morning, all trains on the emergency timetable were running within 2 minutes of the scheduled time.
(GN route)

The chaos continues seemingly! Due to total loss of power at Birmingham New Street Cross Country services are experiencing delays of 2 hours plus as well as cancellation. Many Northern services appear to be cancelled due to train failure.

Thameslink route for Saturday 9 January

Four trains per hour will operate between Bedford and St Pancras calling all stations.

Two trains per hour will operate between London Bridge and Brighton.

It is unlikely that a Wimbledon Loop service will operate, but details will be given as soon as confirmed.

Thameslink route for Sunday 10 January

Two trains per hour will operate between Bedford and Haywards Heath.

Customers travelling to Brighton should change at Croydon for connecting services.

It is unlikely that a Wimbledon Loop service will operate, but details will be given as soon as confirmed.

Great Northern route for Saturday 9 January & Sunday 10 January

The published Saturday and Sunday timetables (including the football specials) will operate, with services extended to 6/8 cars where possible.

But due to some operational issues there may be some late notice cancellations.

Great Northern route for Monday 11 January & Tuesday 12 January

The emergency timetable in operation today (Friday) will also operate on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 January, with some additional trains added into the service.

Which is why we have CAT equipment to scan for cables.:roll:

Let us hope that HMRI take some form of enforcement action, including against the individual, as this is all a very basic health and safety failure if what is said is true

I would hope that the cost of the disruption comes out of the pocket of said contractor!

If somebody in the rail industry makes a mistake, or is alleged to have made a mistake, (some - not necessarily the people who I have quoted) people jump up and down on this site defending them and telling people not to speculate on what actually happened etc etc.

Yet people are quite happy to speculate on what happened in this particular case (which the only info is 'according to what someone said on another site). If ever there was double standards and a 'look out for your own' mentality in this industry

I honestly have to say it's not as bad as the media (both at home and abroad) is making out. It might be cold at night but I'm more than happy during the day down here as it's not that cold, it's still sunny during the day and on most roads and on the rails conditions are satisfactory.

I wonder why thameslink seems to be cutback to nothing and GN is OK for the weekend. One suspects it is more to do with the current dispute rather than anything to do with the weather!

1.3rd rail ices over quickly

2 New stock doesn't like ice

3 Seriously doubt if a full GN service will run tomorrow. One or two failures will cripple it

What are the chances of being able to get to London from Cambridge by about 8:30am on Sunday? Slim? None? Impossible to say?

FCC still have ongoing problems with staff shortages... presumably hence the large recruitment drive.

Latest I've heard with regards to the dispute with current staff is that there will be a reballoting of staff by the 13th of January, so we shall see!

Yes, on the TL side FCC was effectively running its snow timetable many weeks in advance!

I'm intrigued about the suggestion that FCC is only looking for trainee-drivers (for tax write off purposes) and not fully qualified ones, when there are qualified drivers looking for work - and that would in turn solve the driver shortage (if they were put on the TL side).

Yes indeed since there are fully qualified drivers available, the training costs will be lower as I may be wrong but they just have to do a conversion course on the new traction they will be using?
Would be good to offer these drivers first refusal and then look for off the street/internal trainees.
