Today, Sunday 5th, I saw a London Midland 350 at Crewe at around 11pm. The side destination screen showed GRAN CANARIA! As our train left, it changed to Not In Service and presumably left ECS just after.

I've had a 158 turn up at Blackrod with Ramblers Excursion on the front on the last train to Manchester Victoria.

A northbound (ecs) Voyager at Warrington showing somewhere in Poland!

'Par' on a 153 in Platform 8 at Crewe.

'Afon Wen' (long after closure), on a 101 again at Crewe.

Once had 'Shirley' on an LM service from Bletchley-Bedford, but that's understandable. Sometimes it's worth looking at the door displays on 22xs / 390s, as a I believe the content of these can be set to anything the train crew (drivers control it I think) wish.

Had this with a bus in Thassos, Greece - it was on the right stand approaching departure time but the destination showed "Gyros", a place which didn't appear on my island map. Fortunately as a kebab-eater and ex-bus-conductor I solved the riddle, it was the "Circular", a singularly unhelpful destination used extensively in Leeds.

I've seen 158888 with Penzance on the front when Northern was using the unit, saw this at Huddersfield.

The 645 Greengates Circular in Bradford isn't even circular since they rerouted it a few years ago.

I've seen a 350 at Crewe with the front display saying Harrow and Wealdstone (or, being as they can only hold ten characters, Hrrw&Wlstn). At least in this case that is a station that can be served by 350s.

Class 313s have West Anglia destinations such as Tottenham Hale, Kings Lynn, Stansted Airport and a Regional Railways destination such as Spalding!!!

220/1s displays can be controlled by the train manager too.

Strangest one I've ever seen was years ago, an Ilkley-Bradford 142 in skipper livery pulled into Shipley with 'Skegness' on the front...

I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of Voyager's with both "Goodnight" and "Merry Christmas".

And then there is always;

A 375 I caught a few years ago had: "Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells" scrolling on the side ad nauseam.

Presumably the poor Electrostar was nostalgic for the days of old, ane wanted to be part of Trevithick's steam circus. ;)

Does anyone know the code for Ramblers Excursion?

Or indeed the codes that were used on MAN airport services such as Hong Kong etc?

Scunthorpe does not have a bay platform.

Yes it does, its east (Barnetby) facing, but is not normally used by trains in passenger service. The units that work Lincoln-Scunthorpe services stable in bay before returning to Lincoln.

Mine,
158902, in one of the north facing bays at Doncaster, with one blind set for Portsmouth Harbour, http://www.flickr.com/photos/sboothby/9144122741/in/set-72157634338797239
The other blind, Worcester Shrub Hill, http://www.flickr.com/photos/sboothby/9144093173/in/set-72157634338797239

And, 144004, in the same platform, with destination of Crewe, http://www.flickr.com/photos/sboothby/10644461766/in/set-72157634482660561

The 'special' Class 158 codes I've posted below:
Code:
979	Charter
980	Depot
981	Exhibition Centre
982	Express Service
983	Football Special
984	Garden Festival
985	Inner Circle
988	Central Service
989	Mystery Excursion
990	Outer Circle
991	Ramblers Excursion
993	Scotrail Express
994	Sorry Not in Service
995	Special
998	(Display Systems Test)
999	(All segments Illuminated)

Taken from the cards issued when the units were new in 1991.
Codes 998 & 999 are used mainly for testing.

If anyone wants a more complete list (including destinations) PM me.

Scunthorpe does have a bay platform. I remember seeing that our class 170s are prohibited from using it.

2hdp8ad.jpg

(I hope the photo works) I saw this a week ago at Cleethorpes. EMT put on a 153 + 158 Football Special from Lincoln to Cleethorpes (and return) and on the outward journey only 13 passengers travelled on it.

The most unusual one I've seen is 158758 in Leeds showing Milford Haven with the Welsh version showing after it. This was on the end with the LED blind

I remember going back a couple of years ago when Northern's 323s still had their old displays fitted there were I think 3 stabled up at Piccadilly one Sunday morning I think it was (could be wrong its that long ago) and all of them were showing Rochdale on their displays and this was during the closure of the Oldham line for conversion to Metrolink

Maybe because that was it's final destination...

I was once on a westbound Central line train at Holland Park that announced itself as a Waterloo and City line train to Waterloo. Presumably the front DMI also showed this destination

I've seen a Desiro at Clapham Junction displaying the headcode on the front blind and "Cllapham Yard" on the side blind. I guess the driver had a bit of spare time before he set off.
