Derbyshire Wayfarer Changes afoot ( again )

It has always been a case that the Derbyshire Wayfarer has not been valid over the border into Nottinghamshire. It’s valid into Sheffield in South Yorkshire, Burton upon Trent, Uttoxeter and Leek in Staffordshire, and even Macclesfield in Cheshire. Some of these locations are quite a few miles over the county border and yet locations in Nottinghamshire very close to the border have never been included. If it can be valid to Sheffield, Burton Upon Trent, Macclesfield etc, why not Mansfield?

Good points. I recall you can / or used to be able to get an extension from Nottingham - IIRC i had one once to use on the train

If you buy the higher-priced add-on version, it does. Then covers Nottingham, Attenborough and Beeston. Extra £6.40 for an adult.

A bit different as you have to pay extra to do this and it is only valid on the train. The other places over the border is just part of the standard ticket and includes buses.

Derbyshire Wayfarers cannot be bought onboard the train

…although I believe some train guards have sold them in the past!

Isn't the wording down to they used to be on special ticket stock (to aid bus drivers) which was only held by certain stations.

I’m guessing that they mean onboard buses, because elsewhere they say that Wayfarers are not available to buy in trains and only from a limited list of rail stations. Eg you can’t buy one at Whaley Bridge station for example.

I thought all Northern TVMs sold them, is the one at Whaley Bridge an exception ?

I've bought onboard EMR and Northern trains many times over the past couple of years, and also at Northern vending machines. The website should probably be updated. Sometimes takes a while for the ticket inspector to find the ticket but never had an issue.

The Derbyshire CC website has been updated. Senior bus/rail Wayfarers are basically the same (just more expensive), available to a holder of any ENCTS pass and are now additionally available to Senior Railcard holders.
They’ve changed the scratch cards and there’s a link from the DCC site to Sheffields Travelmaster page which shows what they look like.

Yes indeed, and it doesn't say anything about concessionary scratchcards being 5p more than the version bought on-bus or at railway stations. It also doesn't say anything about the concessionary scratchcards not being valid on buses, indeed I've been in touch with DCC and they tell me that they are £11.30 in all cases and that they are valid on buses (including the scratchcard version). It'd be worth contacting them if you have any difficulty using them where you think they should be valid.

Mind you, the wording on both the DCC and the First Bus website does describe the version with add-on to Nottingham as a "rail-only ticket", which would suggest that it's not valid on buses, but DCC tell me it is: I suspected that it actually meant that for travel to and from Nottingham you could only use it on trains, not on buses, but you could use it on buses within Derbyshire.

Could "rail only ticket" also mean that it can only be purchased at Rail Stations or at a Rail TVM? Wording generally is a bit imprecise.
