From BBC News, no article yet.

NRES has this in Service Disruptions

BREAKING NEWS: Several people injured after train collides with an HGV on a crossing at Little Cornard near Sudbury.

Sounds bad, hope there are no severe injuries.

The police helicopter was circling overhead for a while, but it went off after about 10 mins

This crossing is a UWC - always being abused by those using the **** farm.

10 injured, 3 critically, including the driver. Hope all are well. It was a sewerage vehicle. Two air ambulances are on the scene.

Why do press and reports always say 'the train crashed into...' making it sound like the railways'/driver's fault? What are they meant to do about it?

The latest on News 24 from the Ambulance service:

2 people were trapped and critically injured including the driver. They have life-threatening injuries and one was airlifted to Addenbrokes.

According to the reporter the tanker containing sewerage has been crumpled and split and is the opposite side of the train from the cab of the lorry. The train is derailed with the second carriage coming off at an angle to the tracks.

BBC news now reporting 18 injuries, including three life threatening. That means more or less everyone on the train was injured.

ooh, that'll make the, erm, clean up operation particularly pleasant if it was a full tanker. Speedy recovery to the injured.

EADT24 Article said:
The accident happened at around 5.30pm at a user-operated crossing in Little Cornard near to Bures Road, the B1508 when a 44-ton articulated lorry which had just deposited its load at the nearby sewage works was crossing the line

This indicates that the tanker truck was empty when crossing the tracks...
My condolences to the driver and passengers of DMU '156417' (Judging by the photograph), and a speedy recovery to everybody who was injured in the latest level crossing disaster.

Why do press and reports always say 'the train crashed into...' making it sound like the railways'/driver's fault? What are they meant to do about it?

Of course if it WAS the railways fault there'd be days of ambulance chasing and press speculation, a myriad of reports and imposition of cost and complete retraining of the workforce, probably a few people dragged up in court, followed by risk assessment whether such things should be allowed in the first place. All peppered by the likes of Louise Christian and Bob Crow making out the whole thing was a deathrap in the name of profits.

The real deathtraps are these huge trucks, which kill 100s every year, progressively allowed and lobbied for so the hauliers can make more profit. I suspect very little risk assessment is carried out should these things ever collide with a car or heaven forbid a train, and certain none would be carried out for movements over level crossings.

I suspect the whole thing will be forgotten about in a couple of days.

Hope all that were injured recover soon, and the person responsible gets a long jail sentence as a lesson to the other thickos that take chances day in and day out.

Luckly it was a sewage works the HGV was attending to rather than a gas or oil refinery!

I predict the silence from Christian will be absolutely ear shattering, after all it is not the Railways fault so no money there. No public inquiries and no media to posture before in the hope of getting noticed for future preferrment.

The media of course will kill the story because after all a road vehicle driver can do no wrong and any fuss could end up affecting them in turn.

I imagine we will soon be reading the collected half-thoughts of the collective ill-educated masses whose logic and reasoning will lead towards the crossing being" dangerous". Lo they are all about us and they are reproducing to excess !

This bit gets me-

A police inspector has spoken out following a serious train crash which has left two people in hospital and 15 others injured.
“This train will not be moving anywhere for at least two days while investigations into the collision take place.”

I wonder if a motorway would be closed for that long when the facts have already been established! IE-
The rules (and signs) say to call before crossing, NR stated no call was received, the lorry driver admitted he did not call, the lorry went onto the crossing in front of the train and a collision took place.

Do they really need to quarantine the site for 2 days!

I dont know the area but my immediate reaction is how is what looks to be a major access road to a sewage works deemed by Network Rail to be a user worked crossing!
Cant help but feel this crossing should have been equiped with at least red/green lights.

The level of both rail traffic and road traffic over the crossing probably doesn't warrant the extra expenditure red/green warning lights and associated interlockings would require.

If the dumb ass road user had used the correct procedure in the first place then its extremely unlikley any of this would have happened.

Looking at google earth this is a 30 ft wide access road 100 yds from a B road.
Its likely to be used by visitors to the facility unfamiliar with the crossing.
I dont think this would meet the criteria for a uwc by Network rails own standards.

I can't help but feel that as it's in the highway code that users of large or slow moving vehicles should use the telephones provided and seek permission before crossing, as well as being clear signs to that effect, he should actually have done so.

No amount of safety equipment, which imposes a huge cost on the railways, will stop some idiots from misusing these crossings. In the end it boils down to personal responsibility.

It's clearly not a case of the railways following the prescribed standards, more a case of the idiocy of a minority of users and that's where the remedy should be.

Rather than imposing sanctions on the railways, I'd rather like to see such heavy trucks restricted to where they could go and the progressive abolition of crossings paid for by huge fines for misuse.

It's a crime scene and until all the evidence is gathered the site cannot be touched except by those investigating the incident, just hope the driver and the injured are ok. If the scene is cleared without the evidence being gathered thoroughly the Lorry driver could get off scott free so don't knock the actions of those involved.
