Why compare it to Pompey-London? :| Very odd comparison

That is true about Guide Bridge, but the proposed cuts to the service via Woodley to 1tp2h (where did I hear that?!) may free up something, but not much. There may be a free path per hour in that, I suspect there is, and bear in mind also that the Northern Hub will take away a lot of TPE services from Guide Bridge.

That was the original plan by TfGM however they now appear to have binned it and now want the xx23 Rose Hill fast service to be diverted via Guide Bridge calling at all stations between Guide Bridge and Rose Hill. At the same time they also want to remove the Gorton call out of the Hadfield services and insert into the 2tph to Rose Hill.

For those who don't have a clue what I'm on about whan I say what I'd do with the Western approaches into Manchester.... See attched...

Blue = Chat Moss & Terminating bays
Green = Ordsall Cord
Purpule = Windsor Link onto Oxford Road
Red = Salford Central to Windsor Bridge
Yellow = CLC to Liverpool...

As you can proberbly tell, the junction just after deansgate is actually rather simple, and can be treated as four diverging routes, with the loopback between Windsor and Cord there for diversionary purposes.

I wonder why the need for the usual "Manchester Airport" service was not also included in addition to those you have stated....:D

True - its an outrage that Denton doesn't have a direct service yet - presumably there will be calls in the Tameside Reporter for some HS2 services to be diverted via Reddish South before long?

Western end of Victoria soon to become:

4tph Ordstall Cord (2TPE, 2NT)
2tph Liverpool Fast (2TPE)
2tph Liverpool Slow (NT)
1tph Blackburn & Clitheroe via Bolton
1tph Kirby via Atherton
1tph Southport via Atherton
2tph Wigan via Bolton
1tph Blackpool North via Bolton

Thats 14tph

So fourteen from the west, and twelve from the east (in the short/medium term), all you need to do is extend the remaining couple of services to/from Rochdale and there's no need for anything to terminate at Victoria for a few years.

I'm a bit confused by the need to run all of these trains to Denton/ Reddish just to free up space at Manchester Victoria though.

Like I said in another thread, having services terminating at Victoria which approach from the East aren't really an issue, it's the number of services terminating at Victoria which approach from the West, due to having to use through platforms.

As the Calder Vale services are likely to be extended beyond Victoria, this will mean new services from the Denton line could terminate there. However, that doesn't mean we can introduce a lot of new services to Victoria without moving the current gridlock from Ardwick a couple of miles north, which would then defeat the point of sending TPE services to Victoria.

Joking aside Manchester Airport services (both bus and rail) need addressing. When people from places less than 20 miles away from the Airport need to take an indirect route and change, while people from places 100+ miles away can get a fast direct train, something's not right.

Post Ordsall Chord all 4 central Manchester stations will have a direct Airport service, even if all Airport services become local services that would put Manchester in a better position than London for onward travel to Airports.

If you are going to have long distance services to/from Manchester Airport then there are bound to be some places far away with a direct service whilst there are stations within Manchester that lack a direct Airport service.

Similarly there are some stations in the West Midlands without a direct service to Birmingham New Street yet some stations like Aberdeen/ Penzance which do have a New Street service (why does Dundee have a direct train to London whilst some branches in south east England have no direct service?)...

Rail can't directly link every station to every other station

What's that got to do with anything? :|

Do you not read any connecting postings above mine....see those of jcollins and tbtc in which Manchester Airport services are being discussed. I would have assumed that you knew the locations of both Heald Green North Junction and Heald Green South Junction which take rail services from the Styal Line into Manchester Airport.

I do, and I have seen them. I am also perfectly aware of where the junctions are. I was questioning why how busy either junction was was relevant - with any service to / from the North at MIA, the far larger concern is at Piccadilly's throat, south of Slade Lane Jn there are no real issues.

I was bringing the matter of Heald Green South Junction into the debate as the matter of long-distance services to Manchester Airport had already been discussed and that particular junction could see extra types of services from places in The Midlands, that will have to pass through Crewe, to reach Manchester Airport.

I did say rail and bus services to the Airport, not just rail. If you live less than 20 miles from the Airport, it shouldn't take you longer to get to the Airport by public transport than it takes to get to Leeds or Sheffield.

You could, for instance, increase the frequency of trains between Wilmslow and the Airport, offer connecting buses to the Macclesfield, Stockport and Knutsford areas with through ticketing.

With your instance about Birmingham New Street not having direct services to stations in the West Midlands - one of those is Stone, for which there are strong proposals for a Birmingham service. Also, Birmingham, like Liverpool, has multiple stations in the city centre and some local trains don't go in to the station which has regional/intercity trains, but one of the stations they have a direct train to is within walking distance of New Street.

As usual , as is the want on this forum, a thread concerning the two stations of Denton and Reddish South, both with only 1tpw, has developed into a discussion on Manchester Airport railway station and its service provision. I am partly to blame for this, for which I apologise for taking matters somewhat off thread in that respect. My thanks are extended to MattE2010 for noticing this trend in response to one of my earlier postings.

Thank you for everyone's detailed responses and ideas.

Meanwhile, another £??? is spent on two direction signs to Denton, with the BR logo reversed, though I guess that's obsolete anyway.

"Oh, look there's a station this way, that's handy... erm... hang on a minute..."

Maybe it's a trick so that you don't have to pay royalties to BRB to use "their" sign :)

There are similar ones at Hyde North.

Is that logo in the picture the same one used by Sealink ?

That would depend on which side of the ship you were looking at; it was only "reversed" on the port side (so that the arrow at the top was always pointing forwards).

(Search for "Sealink" in google images!)
