Dep : 0640 Exp: No report
Helensburgh Central[HLC]
Arr : 0724 Exp: No report

Well after explaining the situation to the guard, and again to platform staff on arrival, I managed to end up in a taxi.

Two words: thank God.

Good to hear, and good too that Virgin stuck by their Passenger Charter commitment.

Thank goodness you didn't follow the 'advice' from some to make your own way to York/Newcastle arriving in the early hours. That would only have caused you all sort of further problems.

Good news :) Also I would expect you can get a full refund on your ticket as you were surely more than two hours delayed getting to Glasgow?

Yes indeed! Alternative routes are only really useful if Virgin had completely reneged on they responsibilities otherwise always seek the TOCs staff and find out what is officially happening first!

Buy one online and collect it

While this isn't still relevant to the original poster it's worth noting that if you are aware of disruption before purchasing your ticket then you aren't covered in the same way as you are covered if you buy a ticket before the disruption is known about.

I will be checking what I can get; I still have the return portion to use though...

Out of curiosity, instead of buying online, could you not just find the TM / guard and buy the additional ticket form them??

I did seek out the guard once underway from Preston and explained the situation; I also informed a member of groundstaff when we arrived in Glasgow; they asked me to join the taxi queue and no further questions were asked of me.

Have to say, reading this a bit late, that you are very right and I can't actually believe someone would have suggested getting a train to Newcastle to then have to wait in the early morning outside the station (as it would be closed by this point) for the next train to EDB. Utterly stupid and I'm suprised someone last night hadn't picked up on it.

You have had a terrible journey, but to be fair to Virgin trains they did look after you even though the reason for the disruption was not of their making. You should get a full refund for the return journey, probably paid for in Rail Vouchers.

My experience is that TOCs are usually very good and prompt at providing the refund. I once suffered a 4-hour delay going from Birmingham to Taunton with split tickets - FGW coughed up for all four legs even though the journey was made by Cross Country. Another time I was 90 minutes late travelling from St Ives to Birmingham and I obtained a very reasonable settlement even though most of the journey was made on a 8 days in 15 Rover ticket.

Interestingly if you had booked the last flight of the day and it was cancelled due to something outside the airline's control, would you have got the same commitment to getting you to where you wanted to be? Hope your return journey is better.

Agreed on the first paragraph; possibly I have not made it clear enough in this thread that Virgin staff, when they were present, were as helpful and informative as they could have been throughout.
