Well after explaining the situation to the guard, and again to platform staff on arrival, I managed to end up in a taxi.
Two words: thank God.
Also I would expect you can get a full refund on your ticket as you were surely more than two hours delayed getting to Glasgow?Thank goodness you didn't follow the 'advice' from some to make your own way to York/Newcastle arriving in the early hours. That would only have caused you all sort of further problems.
Buy one online and collect it

Yes indeed! Alternative routes are only really useful if Virgin had completely reneged on they responsibilities otherwise always seek the TOCs staff and find out what is officially happening first!
I will be checking what I can get; I still have the return portion to use though...
Out of curiosity, instead of buying online, could you not just find the TM / guard and buy the additional ticket form them??

You have had a terrible journey, but to be fair to Virgin trains they did look after you even though the reason for the disruption was not of their making. You should get a full refund for the return journey, probably paid for in Rail Vouchers.
My experience is that TOCs are usually very good and prompt at providing the refund. I once suffered a 4-hour delay going from Birmingham to Taunton with split tickets - FGW coughed up for all four legs even though the journey was made by Cross Country. Another time I was 90 minutes late travelling from St Ives to Birmingham and I obtained a very reasonable settlement even though most of the journey was made on a 8 days in 15 Rover ticket.
Interestingly if you had booked the last flight of the day and it was cancelled due to something outside the airline's control, would you have got the same commitment to getting you to where you wanted to be? Hope your return journey is better.
