The main difference to trains through Wolverhampton is that most of the Birmingham-Scotland trains are combined with Wolverhampton-Euston trains so there are fewer Virgin seevices between Wolverhampton and Birmingham. The only terminating trains at Wolves through the majority of the daytime are the Walsall stopping services.

This has a knock on effect on the timings at Birmingham, with the :20 services now leaving at :15, and gaps of 19 minutes between trains to Wolverhampton at :38 and :57 most hours. Those :57 XCs in the evening peakare going to be even more rammed than they currently are without a Pendolino leaving 7 minutes before them.

I notice the Exeter-Waterloo line stopping pattern changes with Pinhoe going hourly and alternate trains stopping at either Feniton or Whimple. Looking at the waiting time I'm not sure how Cranbrook fits in when it opens. Will it mean Pinhoe service being reduces again to 2 hourly or worse?

Looking at Sunday 15th Dec it seems all trains aren't loaded as theres a big afternoon gap and also some run Feniton+Pinhoe and some just Feniton only so I'm guessing its not correct yet?

When will EMT and XC finally learn the benefits of communication, a load of connections have been ruined with the new EMT London timetable.

Without checking I presume EMT have moved but XC are sat pretty much where they are? not sure how XC are at fault there...

Confirmed that Barrow-in-Furness is losing all its trains to Manchester after 06:15. A real shame that the 07:15 has gone - I know my dad will be affected by that in travelling for work, it's often very busy for that reason. Odd too that there remains 6 direct trains to Barrow from Manchester during the day, but none in the other direction.

If the new 07:14 from Barrow-Lancaster is as little as 9 minutes late then there'll be an hour wait at Lancaster for the next one - not a very satisfactory situation!

--
Edit - oh there is one at 06:48, which is a marginally better, I imagine most commuters will start their days earlier and convert to that. Still, disappointing that over the last decade all daytime south trains to anywhere beyond Preston have now gone from this line, making it effectively just a branch line.

Looks like some of Dorridge terminators on the Snow Hill line will be extended to Stratford Upon Avon.

for example EMT have moved the 07:57 from leicester to 07:52 which is a well used connection off the 06:52 from new street which arrives at 07:47 and IIRC y
the connection time at leicester is either 6 or 8 mins and as the 06:52 is formed off the depot it could easily be moved forward 3-5 mins to keep the connection.

Yes, hourly off daytime off peak Stourbridge Stratford via Dorridge is an extension of the current Dorridge terminator. On the other half hour the existing Stourbridge Stratford maintains it's current route via Henley in Arden.

Watch out if you come over to the Stourbridge/Kidderminster side of the Snow Hill Lines, a lot of timings and stopping pattens will change.;)

No real changes again on the East Coastway line, despite increased line speeds and new signalling coming into force at the end of November.

If services will be running to the new line speeds, then there will be a fair bit of waiting at stations.

If the service between Westbury and Swindon is reliable then I think there will be no doubt people will use it. We have see what can happen when people are given an improved service just look at the Severn Beach line.

I have to wonder where FGW have found the DMU to operate this improved service although I wonder if the suggestion that we could see loco hauled trains return to the Cardiff - Taunton route this autum have something to do with it since the two loco hauled rakes should release at least 2 dmu's.

I'm trying to work what exactly has changed at the Droitwich/Worcester section of the line. I note the 16:17 departure from WOS has been abolished and the 16:07 from WOF (the train I catch back from school) has been moved 6 mins later. This now leaves a gap of 40mins between it and the previous service in the same direction.

I also noticed that 07:21 from Birmingham Snow Hill to Dorridge operated by LM is replaced and extended to Leamington Spa by Chiltern keeping stopping points intact except after Dorridge.

19:50 Virgin trains New Street to Euston is removed.

Wow! :o :o Just looked at Melksham, it appears to FINALLY have an improved service!!

http://www.opentraintimes.com/location/MKM/2013-12-09/0000-2359

Indeed - though we aren't counting our chickens quite yet. But there is joined up thinking behind it - not only the service, but all the ancillaries that go with it. And within the area served by the line, we're gearing up to make sure that it's known about, works well and becomes a key community facility.

I live and work in Melksham and it will make the most enormous difference - but take a look at other flows too - for example from Swindon to Trowbridge (our county town). There's a comparison {here} that shows just what a difference it makes on timings on that journey.

Another change, which has been mentioned elsewhere, is that most Virgin Liverpool services now call additionally at Crewe, for pathing reasons mainly. Meaning that they no longer call only at stations other Virgin services don't, which was annoying.

(Although it does make it difficult to claim that Virgin Only tickets from Liverpool to other stations in the northwest are valid via London, which used to be the only way that journey was possible.)

The changes on ott are not cast in stone yet but open to stakeholders for consultation, I suggest you contact your Rail User Group and County Council, who have input, you can also complain direct to ATW.
A letter in the local press, will I can assure you be seen by ATW, so make a noise & tell your MP who will be smarting over the Shrewsbury VT collapse.
OTT are only using proposed consultative timings supplied by TOCs on disc

I would be able to access the Asda store in Melksham too. I used to work there but the bus was a pain and the limited train service didn't help, I'd be able to do it now but I transferred to Trowbridge store 3 months ago. Would still visit the Melksham store as I like that store, and will be easier to reach now!

As for stock, I'm unsure where it comes from. Looking in OTT the first Westbury - Swindon unit (that seems to work the line all day from 7am) start's from P3, which is also when the Salisbury - Westbury service arrives (that used to, and might still do, carry the hire in SWT 158). The service finishes on Platform 1 at 2055, conveniently just before the Yeovil - Salisbury T&R.S.M.D SWT 159 arrives. I'm wondering if it is the SWT hire in 158 or if the unit comes from Westbury Carriage Sidings (The empty stock turns from here don't show in OTT). I'll probably go to Westbury one morning to see what does what.

Excellent news to see the MML running at 125mph. But unfortunately EMT have made a dogs breakfast of the affair by not altering their timetables enough for the increased linespeeds to have any significant impact. I would have liked a more drastic recast on all EMT routes, with better connections (see below).

EMT can't even make their own services connect, let alone those of other TOCs. For proof of this look at the ''connections'' between their Mainline services from London, and those to the Ivanhoe Line stations (at Leicester) and those to Skegness and Mansfield (at Nottingham)

By the way, which other EMT/XC connections have been ruined? The only ruined connections I can see are the ones between the XC Stansted to Birmingham services and the EMT London to Nottingham semi-fast service at Leicester.

I think the timings may need to be taken with a pinch of salt at present, given a normal weekday service currently appears to be being shown for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day for the few stations I've checked!

.

On our line we have had class 172s instead of 150s for two years and now we are about to see some result in respect of timetable upgrades based on the accelleration properties of the new stock.
Why the MML has had 125 mph stock for many years without that capability being fully utilised is quite strange.
Sadly getting funding for any rail infrastructure upgrade is at times raving stupid!

You can't always rely on the Platform numbers in the system being correct as I have discovered in the past. Most of the Units which come from the Siding at Westbury start their trains from Platform 3.

the unofficial (but well used) connection from the bhm to lei stopper to the xx:54 to Nottingham and the 06:52 from new street no longer officially connects with the Sheffield train 07:52 instead of 07:57

If the timings are correct, the stopping terminating service from Birmingham will no longer connect with the train forward to Loughborough and Nottingham, cutting Loughborough's connections from Birmingham quite substantially and removing the connection from Nuneaton/Hinckley/Narborough/Wigston to Nottingham, which I believe was set up when the Birmingham to Nottingham via Leicester was withdrawn.

Well yes, though to be fair most of Westburys platform allocations match with what actually happens. I have been there one winter morning and the ECS's from the C.S do indeed use platform 3, at the time there was two units went into P3 to split in the platform 3. There was a 158 that arrived from St Philips Marsh and Platform 1 contained two units that were switched off in Platform 1

Despite the Hitchin flyover and the upgraded goods tracks the southern end of the ecml is still impossible for the Peterborough /Cambridge stopping services to be on time. Looks as though very few changes for off peak
