A tiny change that passed me by was the addition of a 07:15 Castleford to Leeds service calling at Woodlesford. Runs ECS Holbeck to Gascoigne Wood then back to Castleford then Leeds then ECS to Neville Hill. (Actually went into P10 to form 07:48 to Sheffield).

Should become a useful crowd buster as the 07:30ish train from Castleford was starting to get very very snug.

Obviously not that well known as there is about 25 people on it today. But should pick up.
Yes, that’s very useful.

As a Hallam line user, I think Castleford should get more shuttles as it can be impossible to board the Leeds-Castleford-Sheffield service at Leeds (in the evening) which is frustrating when travelling beyond Castleford.

I may be getting my wires crossed here so apologies if I'm wrong, but what happened to the new Northern Leeds-Sheffield fast via Wakefield Westgate?

I thought that was due this TT change?

It's been delayed to start at the beginning of next year. The usual spurious excuses given - reality is probably that they don't have enough crew to run it at the moment.

Weekdays are going to start on the 29th but they will to some extent be mopping up for the CrossCountrys that are being diverted via Doncaster for the first four weeks - some hours don't have a replacement.

That makes sense and will be very welcome during the XC diversions.

Currently it is half-hourly for some hours of the day. Trains from Bristol to Paddington at 12.30, 15.30, 16.30 and 17.30 all deleted and then the 19.00 and 20.00 Bristol to Paddington are combined into a single train 19.30.

Paddington to Bristol at 15.00, 16.00, 17.00, 18.00 and 19.00 all deleted.

It’s 5 round trips Bristol to Paddington that are deleted.

Ooh boy, that’s going to cause some overcrowding

It was delayed specifically to ease the introduction of the new timetable. Nothing to do with crew.

What does 'ease the introduction' mean though? Either the new timetable works or it doesn't.

I hadn't realised about the 27th Dec-25th Jan XC diversions at Leeds until today so apologies if already discussed but they're quite...interesting.

On the hours with a XC, it, the fast and a semi-fast Northern all leave Sheffield and arrive Leeds within a window of as little as eight minutes in the morning peak, and the same going the other way later in the day.

One of the XC Leeds terminators has a 23 minute dwell at Sheffield!

A more joined-up railway might just have one eight or nine car 195 formation in place of all three...

Same happens at most big timetable changes, they are aren't immediately switched on. There is nothing that suggests a timetable works well until it starts and beds in even if its compliant on a graph.

And then what if they don't work in practice? Still doesn't make any sense to me.

So that signallers, controllers, etc can get used to the new structure of the timetable and new regulation policies, contingency plans etc with a few less services in the busiest parts of the network.

You are in trouble, like May 18 and potentially this one, and you are recasting or removing services rather quickly. A significant change should always be refined as a matter of course anyway.

I see there's a new Avanti 9F02, 0616 Euston to Liverpool, the "9" indicating it travels via Birmingham.
Oddly, it's a semi-fast (stops at at Watford, MKC and Rugby) but is operated by a 390.
It's also non-stop from New St to Crewe, unusually omitting Wolverhampton.
Virgin/Avanti Manchester-Euston via Birmingham has always been a thing in the early peak, but I can't remember a service to/from Liverpool before (since 1967 BR, when Euston-Birmingham services were projected alternately to Manchester/Liverpool).

This has been mentioned in post #469/#470.

There are a lot of these "soft launch" measures and unfortunately all of them are essentially nonsense. They don't help anyone, but they do make it seem like the Event Steering Group did something useful to prevent a repeat of May 18.

Coming up with that idea rather late in the day, after already planning to rely on it to provide capacity between Leeds and Sheffield during the Church Fenton closure is symptomatic of the problems with this approach.

I'm seeing quite a few services cancelled/cut back early around the North East due to unavailable train crew, mainly along the Durham Coast and to Ashington. Wonder how Northern managed to go back to old ways

Northern are being a tad disingenuous on their timetable improvements page and station posters.

"Sheffield – Huddersfield
A new late evening train will run, giving customers more flexibility for evening travel."

Er....no, the "new" 2135 departure from Sheffield is actually a retiming of the former 2238. It plugs the gap on the Sheffield -Barnsley stoppers where previously after the 2102 there was a 90 minute gap after which two trains (2231 to Leeds, 2238 to Huddersfield) left within seven minutes of each other.

You could argue therefore that, as the 2135 is the last Sheffield-Huddersfield train of the day, it's a worse service for passengers travelling beyond Barnsley!

I have noticed that Seaford <> Brighton services are scheduled to arrive/depart Seaford Platform 1 in december timetable , this platform isn't any longer, and as per Opentraintimes maps only platform 2 exists.
TRUST reports trains departing / arriving platform 2 contrary to the timetable.

I'm guessing this probably doesn't have any implications or likely to cause any problems given seaford only has one platform anyway

Perhaps platform 2 is going to be renumbered as platform 1....which would be entirely logical in the circumstances.

A large amount of sickness considering the bugs and flu going around would do it I'd think. Plus possibly less interest in overtime and rest day working as we approach Christmas. Not sure there's anything else to it really!

That is dreadful for me, as I often use that train all the way back to Huddersfield.

The ‘solution’ seems to be a 23:05 bus connection at Barnsley from the unaffected 22:30 stopper. As this takes 2 hours to reach Huddersfield (arrived at 01:07), I think I will drive from now on. Well done Northern.

Looks like the 22:38 still runs on Friday and Saturday (as well as the 21:35). So more choice for a weekend evening out in Sheffield.

I suspect this is to do with Transpennine Route Upgrade work in the Huddersfield area. Monday to Thursday evenings the Long Term Plan has buses only after 2300 at Huddersfield. Northern should really be publishing this though.

Thank you, they should definitely publish that, I understand now the reasoning. For the greater good and all that.

A couple of changes I've noticed on the Midland Mainline.

9R85 (0633 Bedford to Three Bridges TL) has turned up with 12 cars instead of 8 in the past few days. Not sure if this is one of the changes or a temporary thing but it was most needed for this particular service.

9R44 (1636 St Pancras to Bedford TL) now cuts out West Hampstead Thameslink but now calls at Platform 4 St Albans instead of Platform 2. I assume the time saved by not calling at West Hampstead allows the usage of P4 at St Albans without impacting the EMR Connect (1Y45).

1Y47 (1717 St Pancras to Corby EMR) now calls at Luton at 1742 instead of 1744.
