The same journey can be made just with a painless level change at Greenford.

Really it’s astonishing it’s lasted until now.

There have been middle of the night Manchester<->Blackpool services for years, right back to North West Regional Railways or earlier. They may have lasted for the reason noted, but that isn't why they existed.
That was specifically addressing the 033x departure from Blackpool as present, which remains even when all the other middle of the night departures have long been scrapped.

With the route not being cleared for DOO, it was never a particularly practical diversionary route anyway. I think the most you could hope for would be for the Chiltern platforms at Old Oak Common to be built, but that's still many years away from fruition.
I think that if this happened - and a platform(s) at Greenford were included in that plan, the Branch could likely close to passenger services without much impact. And mitigate against the OOC/North Acton lack of 'rail-side' connection.

The north star plan for Chiltern OOC I believe was 4tph out of two bays: 1tph to each of High Wycombe, Banbury, Aylesbury (to EWR/MKC?), Oxford.

Not really. It's a parliamentary service.
One that never made sense.
When the original line via Park Royal existed it made sense, because it went to Paddington. But South Ruislip to West Ealing as a Chiltern service, never warranted existing in any capacity in my opinion.

Had we lived in different times perhaps a Greenford Shuttle at each end of the day could have been extended but anything that requires training is just a no-go these days.

Any other "rare track" lost this December?

Anything gained?

TIA
The curves linking Chislehurst & St Mary Cray get an improved service, rather than being mainly peak time only (and a bit cheaper to do as they are first stop Swanley rather than Rochester).

I'm sure someone would have done a comparison to see what unusual track is lost and what is gained outright, what unusual track becomes harder and what will become easier.

I believe the Saturday morning Birmingham - Crewe service which used to avoid Wolverhampton now goes via Wolverhampton.

Looks like there are no longer any passenger services over the Darlaston Jn-Pleck Jn curve (the direct route between Wolverhampton and Walsall). There is currently a Saturdays-only Wolverhampton to Rugeley Trent Valley service which does this curve.

There are the usual Caledonian Sleeper diversions via Primrose Hill in order to run via the ECML - but notably, these operate for a much longer period this year, from mid-February until the end of the timetable on Friday and Sunday nights, in addition to the usual 2 weeks in March on Monday-Thursday nights. This is due to engineering work at Carstairs.

The line between Gainsborough Central and Barnetby via Brigg regains its service - 3 trains each way on Saturdays, as pre-Covid.

You mean:
Point Pleasant Jn to East Putney - need!

Oh, and referring to earlier in the thread:

South Greenford to South Ruislip - got!
What's with all these "needs"? I thought you had yellow-penned the entire passenger network?

Depends if you want these as a normal timetabled service, as some of the West Mids stuff will be easy to get over the next year at weekends via diversions. You will have to wait a year or so for Darlaston Pleck until the new stations open.

Much appreciated that I had a feeling it would be 185s, assuming the Mk5/68s will be on the Manchester-Scarborough and Liverpool-Cleethorpes.
I think the point is that the empty stock working track to Ardwick rather than anywhere else and it fits the traincrew knowledge.

Black biro, please!

Well, I've done the entire "Normal" everyday network, just a number of entries listed at PSUL left to do.

Longest gap for me has to be Clitheroe to Hellifield (13 miles 46 chains).

Same for me.

I've done Clitheroe - Hellifield, but my longest gap is Sharnbrook Junction to Kettering North via Sharnbrook Tunnel - 17m 24ch! Next longest is Kirkby Lane End Junction to Ironville Junction (Pye Bridge) - 5m 13ch.

Just been looking at the changes page on Southeastern's website and they say that "there will be, for the first time for many years, a half hourly fast service in the morning peak from Orpington to London Charing Cross, and in the evening peak from London Charing Cross to Orpington."

When was the last time such services ran?

Well they ran during Covid. What used to happen was obviously things stopped at Chelsfield and Orpington was only achieved through stopping local trains. This idea smacks of bad judgement on the grounds that Orpington commuters will just fill up faster trains.

When did Hastings trains stop calling there?

The 0624 from Ore to Cannon Street is strange, running fast from High Brooms to Chelsfield, then Chelsfield to London Bridge.

Historically not many fast trains stopped at Orpington in the peaks. Down trains typically ran fast from Waterloo East or London Bridge to Chelsfield, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge or even High Brooms. I've never understood why they stopped at Chelsfield rather than Orpington.
