Thats good, they just need to improve the car parking now .
Won't that upset the irascible neighbour .... I think it was Acton Bridge where one of the locals came out of his house to shout at people on the platform wasn't it? He'll be really happy if major construction work is needed on the car park if so ......

All the Acton Bridge car park needs, in the short term anyway, is for Network Rail to move the fence that limits the size of the car park. Nothing major.

Yes it’s the 04:48 but it’s not currently running. From your URL, is it back on the timetable from mid December?
It’s in the timetable for the day I selected, 13 December, yes. Whether or not Avanti can deliver the full timetable by then, I don’t know.

Sorry if this has already been stated but unfortunately I'm not in a position to read through a 51 page discussion!
Does anyone know when the new timetable will be confirmed? I'm trying to book to travel to France next April, but my trip will involve travelling from Wakefield to London on the train before heading out from Stanstead or Gatwick. However I can't book flights until I can see what time I can get into London for a sensible price.

The new timetable is live in journey planners and tickets can be bought for most operators (some have - falsely - marked their trains as 'reservations compulsory' and have not yet released reservations), up until whatever cutoff date the journey planner in question allows.

But confirmed? It's difficult to say. Timetables can always be changed post-publication, and this has happened on a very frequent basis over the last couple of years. I would have a much stronger degree of confidence that operators such as LNER and Greater Anglia will actually run the currently advertised timetable - than with operators such as Avanti and TPE, who are currently operating 'temporary timetables' in various guises with little sign of reliability improving.

If you're travelling on a weekday, and particularly if reservations have been released for the date in question, you can be fairly sure that what's in journey planners is what will run. But on weekends, any engineering work related alterations won't show until closer to the date and reservations (and thus Advances) won't be released until that happens.

The base plan is confirmed now.

Amended plans for engineering works are confirmed 8 weeks out. And you can buy tickets from then. However LNER do allow the buying of tickets much earlier.

You will be able to gauge typical prices for morning trips to London by looking at an equivalent day 6-8 weeks from now.

I don't know about that, but one of the issues has been, trainspotters using up the precious parking spaces, when passengers can't get one. The car park was larger in the past, half of it is blocked off. Network rail seem to store bits and pieces. The parking issue has been a problem for sometime and puts off rail users.

Quite so.

You could do the whole trip by rail using a 4-day Interrail (assuming you are coming back!) at pretty much a fixed price (if you buy now - they don't respond quickly to the currency markets!).

Friday, apparently, now being the cheap day at business times (there's a very recent thread somewhere)

There have been some further changes to the SWR timetable from December. The Epsom line will now see 4tph for a period in the evening peak as well as the morning peak which it already has. Not sure if anything else has changed.

Fantastic news. Bookham finally getting a much needed 2tph again in the evening peak and the likes of Worcester Park/Epsom 4tph.

Looks like for an hour between 17:30 and 18:30, departures returning to the old pre Covid departure times from Waterloo (17:39 and 18:09 to Guildford, 17:54 and 18:24 to Dorking)

Looking at Northern's Manchester area services, Heaton Chapel and Levenshulme's poorly spaced northbound service pattern is now slightly improved though still suboptimal. It's now Cheadle Hulme's turn to get a rubbish pattern for some reason.

It looks to me as if you relieve the problem somewhat at CHU and also further improve HTC and LVM by just running the Crewe stopper 10 mins earlier, and there doesn't seem to be anything obvious stopping them from doing that, but no doubt there will be a good reason. Maybe paths in the Piccadilly station throat?

If the Crewe train is staying as is, I also question whether the Buxton stopper really needs to serve HTC and LVM. It's diesel, has come from further afield than Hazel Grove, Alderley Edge or Crewe, and is only 6 minutes behind the Crewe train anyway, so why not speed up journeys from Buxton a bit and give the electrified stations a 100% electric service?

Chester service in the way if it goes 10 minutes earlier.

Any scope to swap the Crewe and the Chester? The Chester is only hourly and slots into a bay at the other end so it's fairly arbitrary when it goes. Again, I'm sure there'll be a good reason why they've done this, I'm just curious.

Not that arbitrary due to the single line sections. The clash is at Edgeley onwards to Manchester anyway.

I see... I guess Heaton Chapel, Levenshulme and Cheadle Hulme are stuck with the messy pattern indefinitely then, which seems odd considering the new service pattern means that paths for these services should no longer need to match up across both sides of Manchester. To my mind this should mean more flexibility, not less, but then again, I'm no expert so I shall assume those responsible have done their best to fit everything in.

On the plus side, reliability should improve with less going through Castlefield. The trains are also less bunched in the southbound direction, and the odd arrangement where trains stop at one but not the other of HTC and LVM is gone entirely.

It's mostly gone from the small stations on the Airport line as well. Two stoppers per hour with the Heald Green, Gatley and East Didsbury each getting one "fast" makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately they're still unevenly spaced, but considering the amount of different traffic that line has to cope with with just two tracks and most of the trains heading for a terminus which is rather undersized, it's a miracle the service works at all.

Does anyone on here know if there will be any direct trains from Hemel Hempstead to Northampton from December 2022 onwards? I have heard that there will be 2tph to Tring and 2tph to Milton Keynes from Euston. I assume that the trains from Euston to Birmingham will not call at Hemel.

And also... that Crewe service that you mention is probably difficult to timetable itself. It has to squeeze into P1 at Crewe, has several conflicting junctions en route, uses the Castlefield corridor and so on. I am surprised it runs as a through service and retiming it isn't likely to be easy.

No, it reverts to terminating in and starting from Piccadilly in the new timetable, as it did prior to May 2018. And the stopper via Stockport has run from Piccadilly only since 2018 as well, it's only the stopper/semi-fast via Manchester Airport that's been running to/from Liverpool via Castlefield and Chat Moss. The stopper to Alderley Edge via Stockport reverts to terminating/starting at Piccadilly also.

I hadn't noticed that. It's a good thing for reliability.

It's a huge improvement.
Although it did get better, the Southport/Wigan-Alderley Edge service was initially a service for which no timetable was needed, I once turned up at Heaton Chapel to find one running in completely late, which was good in that it was a waste of time turning up in the hope it'd be on time. It also delays the Manchester-London service when it runs late [between Adswood Road and Alderley Edge], assuming such a service is running of course. And it generated horrible clapped-out DMUs ("Welcome to our world" say lots of others, I know, but after 60 years of a reliable EMU service it wasn't good).
Hopefully soon also we'll get rid of the 319s also, I don't mind them when I'm on them but they're past their best to say the least, and therefore also unreliable. And it would be near-Nirvana if none of the services use platform 0 at Stockport as well!

In fact the Crewe via Stockport stopper has been pretty much untouched for over a decade now, possibly longer. I think at one point it (or maybe the Stoke stopper, which is has also been the same for years) once had the odd random evening extension to/from Deansgate, but that's about it.

Has anyone taken a look at the major change in Southeastern metro timetable, with swap of terminals of various branches, notably with Bexleyheath Line and North Kent Line losing Charing Cross service.
I am wondering would that be overloading Lewisham station for interchange, especially on Saturday where there is more flow than weekday daytimes.

You’d never knowingly change at Lewisham when you can change at London Bridge for far more trains.

It has been extensively discussed upthread (or se0arately, or both?).

I don't recall your specific point being made, though.

My guess is that most passengers will change at London Br, and a fair number of Bexleyheath Line passengers will simply switch to Victoria.
Those who are heading to places within walking distance of CHX/WAE will split between the CST and VIC services so some will opt to change platforms at Lewisham. Not sure it will be vast numbers.

I agree - the impact on interchange will be interesting - but I don't think that will take place at Lewisham. Swapping between Charing Cross and Cannon Street services will be easier and probably quicker with higher frequencies at London Bridge. I would assume it's the Victorias that drive up interchange at Lewisham but as they are staying largely as is I don't think anything will materially change. A lot of interchange can still be done same-platform too, and I have observed people hopping between Bexleyheath and Woolwich line services at Lewisham.

More material might be the introduction of Sevenoaks to Lewisham services, which might be an attractive way to Canary Wharf (Via DLR).
