Sound advice. When I received this email from DBS I knew that things were not going well.

"Dear Candidate,

I just wanted to confirm by email that we still have your application in the Talent Pool at DB Schenker waiting for trainee driver positions and courses. I am sorry to advise that we have had to postponse any traincrew recruitment for 2015 as the company undertakes a detailed business review.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience and continued interest in working with us at DB Schenker.

So I looked elsewhere - and now I find myself in another talent pool with GTR

Maybe we could start a thread to see how many talent pools a person can be in without actually getting a job?

The situation with DBS, and any other FOCs affected by the demise of coal traffic, could also have an effect on those seeking trainee positions elsewhere. Expect efforts to be made to find work for qualified drivers facing redundancy.

Indeed, with freightliner and DBS sending out the possibility of heavy redundancies the possibility of trainee positions in the latter part of this year is extremely grim with any TOC as ASLEF will do their utmost to secure jobs for any redundant drivers as they did with DBS 6 years ago if I recall many went to Thameslink. Before all you potential non railway folks say it's not fair unfortunately in my opinion it is very fair that a qualified driver who is made redundant gets priority over anyone else.

Well, its not fair in the sense that life's not fair but it really is fair as you say. Surely no one would argue with fully trained drivers getting the nod over complete newbies.
