Just received an email from DB regarding Tyne Yard, basically thanks but your application may have made the standard but we have no assessment places left so keep watching our web site.

Oh well !!

Donachie.

Just a heads up, I received a pack through the post dated 18th march, regarding a assessment day for the 30th April. Contacted them regarding hotels nearby in Donny, was advised by HR to hold off booking anything, as dates could change will be confirmed in writing by the end of the week, wonder if it will be brought forward ? good luck to everyone else waiting on news.

Displaced....is that drivers wanting to move back home, etc? These HR departments seem to delight in f*****g people about, or are inept.

Yeah , how dare they save money and time by helping out people that already work for them and are a known quantity !
Not to mention that these drivers probably had to be moved because of redundancy .

Shame on you , DBS .
Not looking after people you have never met !!!!

All 5 going internal, and I believe there is a driver who got made to move back in 2008 when the axe fell. So it's only correct if there are vacancies back at his Home Depot he is asked first instead of someone of the street!

I've never said anything regarding who is filling the roles! Of course it's right that people who have been moved get the jobs and take priority over " someone off the street" as you put it. Did the displaced drivers suddenly show interest in relocating last week? I doubt it. HR sent out my appointment last thursday, i made arrangements to attend and they pulled it yesterday. That seems inept to me. I'm annoyed because they must have had at least an inkling the jobs were going to be filled internally but went ahead with invites to assessment anyway.

As to being an external candidate, weren't all of you at some point? Or does it irk some that people can now join as trainee drivers straight from " the street" ? Train driving certainly isn't the only safety critical role out there where attention needs to be maintained at all times or people will be injured or worse, i'm sure external candidates wouldn't be entertained if they weren't suitable for the job.

Who mentioned safety critical ?

When I joined nearly 28 years ago I went traction trainee - drivers assistant - driver .

Don't see the relevance , tho !

These drivers who are going back to their home depots have probably shown an interest for a while but due to managers now looking after more than one depot the application has somewhat been delayed.
I understand your frustration but with the company looking to take on 200 drivers in the coming years then perhaps it's best to stay calm and not slate HR off.

I mentioned safety critical because Bert n Ernie's " externals are more of a risk " was in my head. Relevant to me as my perception is there's a level of elitism associated with some internals. That's all, no doubt i'm paranoid :D

I was internal, and it was only last week that they confirmed the internals that would be taking the jobs, they will have only invited you for an interview in case an internal decided to stay put and not transfer. This is common HR practice on the railway. It also saves DB a lot of time and money training guys up from scratch when these drivers can jump straight in the seat.

Not sure about Tyne but they should be more jobs elsewhere around the country for DB, you may be best of moving to get a foot in the door, and then see what else comes up.

Folks,
When attending initial testing, are interviews carried out on the same day or does that come later?

It makes perfect sense to me that any company would prefer to take on known quantities (such as currently employed staff in different roles and displaced redundant men with 'move to home depot' forms on file) rather than go to the expense and 'risk' of employing external candidates.

However, Fred has my sympathy and understanding on this one.

HR MUST have known how many internal applications had been submitted and MUST have known how many displaced men wanted a move back (the relocated men have to re-submit the form every year and it is scrutinised by ASLEF before any external vacancies are advertised).

That's the way it should work - in this case Fred has been invited to interview and has arranged travel and overnight lodging just for it to be pulled with next to no notice.

It's shabby at best, downright unprofessional at worst.

Every cloud and all that - the fact that internals have got the drivers vacancies means there must be vacancies where they once worked ;)

I have just received the same knock back letter cancelling my assessment day. Extremely disappointing after having the carrot dangled in front. However possibly not surprising when you look overall at the Uk train driver recruitment process and looking back through many posts on here. I have come in to looking at the possibility of becoming a Train driver only recently and the recruitment process does appear to be be somewhat shambolic at best!! Mind you I have come from the Airline world and comparing the two is like chalk and cheese!
DB are also refusing to keep the details on file of those who have gone through this current application process which frankly i just can't understand if indeed this company is shortly to need "200 drivers" as I've seen mentioned here. Surely if you have a group of people who have met your recruitment criteria then why not keep them close to your chest?
As i said I'm massively dissapointed but it has certainly made me think would i now actually want to be part of a company that is clearly massively disorganised in this department and would i therefore be happy to sign a financially bonding contract to such a company?!! At least i can stop looking at those bloody dots everyday for awhile!!
As an aside i have never ever seen any of the assessments used for being a Train driver used in the recruitment or training of an Airline Pilot and the roles are very similar!
