I recently did a split from Manchester Picc to Edinburgh. I discovered that a TPE Ticket from Manchester to Edinburgh was considerably more expensive than getting 2 off peak day returns from Manc Pic to Preston and Preston to Edinburgh because there is no off peak day return available for the whole journey!

Despite the fact that it was the same train both ways... I felt sorry for anyone who ended up doing that journey on an off peak return without knowing...
Most savvy passengers know about split ticketing websites such as Trainsplit these days; anyone on a tight budget will surely be doing that. But some people (and most businesses) are prepared to pay the premium to book from the operators directly, and they subsidise the cheaper fares for those of us who are a bit more savvy ;)

It's worth noting carefully what the ticket name is. An 'advance' ticket always restricts breaks of journey, meaning that an advance ticket from Crewe to Llandudno cannot be used to travel to Chester (unless you were to go to Llandudno and then return to Chester, using a separate ticket from Llandudno to Chester, of course).
It was reported on here many years ago, following a widely reported case of an academic, I think at a North East University, having been taken to court for alighting at Durham rather than Newcastle, or similar, that an instruction was issued to staff to not enforce stopping short or starting early on advance tickets.

...in theory only where there is no fare advantage.

It was indeed, but as pointed out above that's in general only a leniency that you can expect where you haven't saved anything.

I'm afraid that's incorrect. As has been pointed out above by Watershed London to Newark is a former 'intercity' fare. Lots of 'intercity' fares actually were the old cheap day returns. Furthermore the removal of the Off Peak Day Return between Derby and Birmingham is a recent thing - it still existed in 2018.

It is however true that nearly all journeys for Network South East only would have had a cheap day return. However there were some gray areas even Being from Newark I can help you out on the Newark to Kings Cross CDR. It was GNER who introduced the Newark to Kings Cross CDR in May 2000 you could only use it after 10.00 Monday to Friday back then the Kings X train used to leave Newark at 09:58 which meant that you could use it from Grantham on that train but not Newark they also did a Newark to York CDR as well. The 1st CDR they introduced was Newark to Peterborough that was May 98 £5.00 when the SDR at the time was nearly a tenner. The 2 CDRs they never introduced and probably should have was Newark to Leeds or Newark to Doncaster but there was a work around those 2 buy a fiskerton to Rotherham CDR valid via Newark and Doncaster that still does save you a fortune and Fiskerton to Manchester CDR which is valid via Newark and Leeds.

Do not be confused by the two Wayfarers available:
The cheaper Derbyshire Wayfarer (£13.40, £6.70 for over 60's) is valid on the:
58 bus from Macclesfield to Buxton(Sun: Bakewell and Chatsworth)
the 60 bus to New Mills Newtown(Buxton trains) and Central(Sheffield Hope Valley).
also buses to Leek, Ashbourne, Uttoxeter, Burton and East Midlands Airport.
Train destinations (from 09.00)include Sheffield, Chesterfield, Derby, Ilkeston, Matlock, Burton, Uttoxeter(not via Stoke unless you pay extra)and Long Eaton.
The GM Wayfarer is Good Value when I lived in Sheffield i used to buy Sheffield to Grindleford CDR GM Wayfarer then Chorley to Glasgow CDR when going up to Ibrox used to cost me around £45 compared to £112 if I bought a Sheffield to Glasgow SVR.

By comparison Prestatyn to Chester 30 miles, no day returns peak or off peak available!

Chorley -> Edinburgh. Off Peak Day Return available.

Chorley -> Moston. No through Day Return fares showing as available

Possibly because the GM Wayfarer is available. An especial bargain if you qualify for the old folks version.

Indeed. I used to do a day out in Edinburgh from Chorley when there was no need to change at Preston and TPE were offering cheap deals.

There's an Anytime Day Return, and an Off Peak Return, both essentially without restrictions.
Those fares compare reasonably well with eg Liverpool-Manchester, though that has a wider choice of fares including some operator specific fares.
North Wales has some Avanti-specific fares, but these are spectacularly useless with the restricted service currently operating.

I note that there is also a CDR from Adlington (in Lancashire, but right on the Greater Manchester border) to Edinburgh!

Quite a few stations in the same fares cluster as Chorley and Adlington (Lancs), including Kirkham & Wesham, Rufford and Pleasington.

Similarly the Edinburgh fares cluster includes Fauldhouse, Breich, South Gyle and Edinburgh Gateway.

I've used an Adlington to Edinburgh Gateway off peak day return before now to make a round trip in one day.
