Darlington station used to have two of the oldest locomotives, pioneers from the Stockton & Darlington, placed across the bufferstop ends of the south-facing bays. They were eventually removed to the museum, but when I looked a few years ago I reckoned I could see where the asphalt had been patched where they used to be on a plinth.

They were at the buffer stop ends of platform 2 & 3 - there is some sort of planter there now

I don't think it has been mentioned but I seem to recall that BR once wanted to remove the overall roof, I think this was not ling after the roof at Stockton was demolished in 1978 ?

yes i heard that - could never find out if it was true or rumour. It would be awful without a roof!

Especially considering it's already freezing cold and windy! It doesn't bare thinking about if it didn't have a roof...
