Except that you can’t turn right off Roe St onto Churchill Way. It’s left turn only at that junction.
That's what I am saying. I don't understand why Cheshire East don't change it so it works better for buses. Hey, nothing like needlessly slowing down buses and sending them on a convoluted route and then wondering why people choose not to use them.....

I can see why they would want to drop Manchester Airport from the route to increase the layover / punctuality / reliability on the service and have also seen the very low usage on the 130 to the Airport but it is a shame that Cheshire East will be down to one rail service and no buses serving the Airport
At least it's an easy interchange to Metrolink at Wythenshawe and, whilst it's annoying, the fare is relatively low from there to the Airport.

Or, best plan, don't make the service so slow to get to the airport in the first place. At Handforth, join the new Airport connector road and you'll be there in 5 minutes then link up to Wythenshawe.

From my experience, passenger flows were generally quite good from Handforth to Wythenshawe so why alienate the people actually using the service?

It wouldn't be much time difference if they ran to Wythenshawe via Airport rather than running via Heald Green.

Is the reason why the Sunday 130 (they could have renumbered it say 129), terminates at Handforth, is Cheshire East won't fund into Manchester?

Be interesting to see how much BSIP is being used to fund the new services. Serving an unserved part of Macclesfield is good to see but patronage in the northern part of Cheshire East is very, very low due to high car ownership rates and relatively large distances between settlements, as well as commuting habits into Manchester using the train. BSIP is expensive and has already been used for:

Phase 1 - £350k over 2 years (June 2024-2026):
- 12 (Crewe) Saturday Evening and Sunday Daytime
- 38 (Crewe-Macclesfield) Sunday Daytime
- 130 (Macclesfield-Handforth) Sunday Daytime

Phase 2 - £1.65m over 2 years (July (84)/September (10/12/12A/13) 2025-2027):
- 10 (Macclesfield) - Amalgamating services and Sunday daytime
- 12/12A/13 (Crewe) - New and realignment of services in Northern Crewe between Leighton and Crewe Business Park
- 84 (Crewe-Chester) Additional extensions between Nantwich and Chester Monday-Saturday

Phase 3 - Unknown Sum
- 130 (Macclesfield-Wythenshawe) - Realignment of service
- 150 (Macclesfield-Alderley Park) - New Service
- 317 (Leighton-Sandbach) - Saturday Service Extension

It is also understood at Northwich - Winsford - Middlewich - Leighton - Crewe Sunday service will launch in 2026 although details are vague

If that does happen then just an idea, they could number that service the 31A. With it following the 31 route down to Winsford then serving Winsford railway station and Middlewich and then following the 42 route to Leighton and then picking back up the 31 route into Crewe serving Broad Street & North Street.

Yes it’s very good to see Chester Road having a bus service again, with 8 outbound journeys and 9 inbound journeys.

The west of Macclesfield daytime bus service frequency:

2023 pre-Arriva: 3 (2bph), 4 (2bph), 19 (2bp3h), 38, (2bph), 88 (1bp2h) & 130 (1bph) so overall 9.25 bph.

2023 post-Arriva: 3 (2bph), 19 (1bp2h), 19A (1bp2h), 38 (1bph), 88 (1bp2h) & 130 (1bph) so overall 5.5 bph.

2025: 10 (2bph), 19 (1bp2h), 19A (1bp2h), 38 (1bph), 87 (1bph), 130 (1bph) & 150 (1bph) so overall 7bph.

From what I understand (and could change) it would be numbered 37 and run the 37 route from Northwich to Middlewich, then the 42 route to Leighton, then the 31 to Crewe but could change as there is an appetite to serve the Frank Webb Avenue part of Crewe too

Cheshire East appears to be really pushing the 38 and hopefully that can increase to half-hourly again, which would allow the 37 to be retimed and reduce overcrowding on the Crewe - Sandbach section

If a new Sunday service to Leighton is launched, a completely different number should be used if it's going to serve a different route. I seem to recall the cancelled 2020 Sunday service from Northwich to Crewe was going to be numbered 30.

From 24th November 2025 Service 130 will be revised to operate between Macclesfield, Bus Station, Macclesfield Hospital and Wythenshawe Interchange and will no longer run through to Manchester Airport following a decline in patronage. Alternative links to Manchester Airport are available at Wythenshawe on local bus and tram services.

Sunday buses continue to be operated by High Peak Buses running between Macclesfield Bus Station and Handforth Dean. D&G Bus Day/Week and Season Tickets are valid on these journeys.

Also, from 24th November 2025 brand-new bus service 150 will be introduced running up to every hour during the daytime Monday to Friday between Macclesfield Bus Station, Macclesfield Railway Station, Chester Road and Alderley Park. Some early morning and later afternoon journeys run to/from Alderley Edge and Wilmslow Railway Station.

Service 130 is supported by Cheshire East Council and Service 150 is supported by Cheshire East Council and UK Government.

Good to hear that a Sunday service is arriving, I did think it wasn't very clever that a route that connects 4 or so major places isn't running on a Sunday and will hopefully allow people to get out on Sundays.

D&G have registered on VOSA to vary routes:

10 - Weston-Macclesfield-Bollington - from 4 January 2026

84X - Crewe-Nantwich - from 5 January 2026

No information on the changes at this stage

Has anyone on here had experience of using the current Sunday journeys on the 8, 12 or 38 and if so what was your impression? Were the journeys you were on being well used or were there only a few passengers? Was usage at a similar level to what you remember when the services ran pre-Covid?

I'm just curious as I know that particularly in the case of the 38, the frequency is lower than it was before it was withdrawn in 2020?

The 8 and 12 look okay especially when the Makers Market is in Crewe. I've used the 38 a few times and loads were very low albeit not used it recently.

Stagecoach 84 is well used - again a route with low frequency and loads been very good since D&G cut 84X. That appears a route that should be hourly.

Thanks for this interesting information.
Not had much experience of the 8 but am aware of the 12 and 84 being busy when I've used them in the week.
My experience of the 38 in the week has always been that a lot of passengers seem to travel between Crewe and Sandbach/Congleton or between Congleton and Macclesfield. Is this sort of behaviour generally replicated on Sunday?

Separately, a number of times I've used either the last or penultimate journey on the 38 towards Crewe boarding at Haslington and there has normally only been one or two others on the bus by that time. Is usage on the 38 generally low at that time of night or is the section between Macclesfield and Congleton/Sandbach busier with the remainder of the route to Crewe less so?

I've noticed that too on the weekdays on the 38, it can be a bit too busy at time and I do feel that double deckers would be feasible to put on the route, not that D&G would ever get deckers..

Before Arriva withdrew from Eastern Cheshire in April 2023, D&G operated route 38 as well as Arriva, giving a half hourly service 0800-1800 Mon-Sat. There might be a case for increasing the service back to half hourly at certain times, in particular 0800-1800 Mon-Fri between Macclesfield and Sandbach. Sandbach to Crewe already has a half hourly service 0800-1800 Mon-Sat alternately on routes 37 and 38. There is no need for double deck buses in Eastern Cheshire.

When the 38 was last half hourly under Arriva, did it operate in tandem with D&G's journeys or were they all evenly spaced out?

They were 15/45 minutes apart in competition

Crewe - Sandbach is the densest and busiest corridor. This being 3 buses an hour should be viable given Crewe - Nantwich has 5-6 buses an hour and are similar distances

Crewe - Sandbach COULD work 3 buses per hour. After all it did work that frequent for a while. The difference now is that this corridor is ran by an operator who wants the world handed to them on a plate and thrives by scrounging off taxpayers. They haven't a care in the world for growing patronage or improving services. If the corridor was ran by a more progressive operator, I think you'd probably find there would be 3 buses per hour.

Crewe to Nantwich is 4 proper buses per hour. Just because the 85 and 39 do operate between the two towns, people aren't using them for these journeys. It'd be like saying Crewe to Congleton has 2 buses per hour because they have the 42 and 38 despite the fact they serve very different people and uses.

I miss the 37A/W when that was a thing connecting Winsford to Sandbach as it made the connection from Winsford, Middlewich to Sandbach much quicker. Arriva did give up the service just before covid but it was great for the school runs and better frequency.

D&G varying timetable on 10 and 84X from 4 January 2026. On 84X a couple of services are removed following reshuffle of timetable and they mainly sit 5 minutes ahead of Stagecoach leaving Nantwich although a more consistent 15 minute service leaving Crewe appears it seems.

D&G also launching a new 340 bus service in partnership with Shropshire Council from January 2026: Whitchurch - Market Drayton - Wellington

I think that at Nantwich people will just get on the first bus to turn up and so being 5 minutes ahead is probably more beneficial for them at that end. At the Crewe end I think people there prefer the 15 minute frequency and that is benefits them more. Great shame though that the only time D&G give a stuff about providing a service is when they are trying to get rid of a competitor. Any other time, they provide a sub standard service and want to scrounge off Cheshire East.

Long overdue. Why it's taken Shropshire council this long to see sense and link between their towns, is anyones guess. I'll certainly go for some journeys when it starts up.

A new bus service between Whitchurch, Market Drayton, the Princess Royal Hospital and Wellington bus station will begin on 5 January 2026, after a contract to operate the service was awarded to D&G Buses.

The new service, numbered the 340, will be funded from the Shropshire Council’s recent allocation of Government bus service improvement funding for the year 2025/26.

Buses will operate Monday to Saturday, starting at 7.05am from Whitchurch to Market Drayton then Wellington. The service from Wellington to both towns starts at 7.10am. The service provides a much-needed and much-requested connection between these towns, allowing access to Princess Royal Hospital, Telford College and Wellington and Whitchurch railway stations. The last bus from both Wellington and Whitchurch will be at 6.40pm.

We are making some changes to service 84X from 5th January 2026.

This is to improve reliability, particularly during the afternoon peak period.

Most journeys will be retimed, although early morning journeys will remain unchanged. There is no change to the route.

That'll be very handy. Saves people having to go the long way round via Shrewsbury and then Drayton. Much easier! Any idea what depot this will be run from? It seems like something Chaserider should run as it's closer to them and pretty much equal distance from Crewe & Stoke depot. Would make sense if Crewe ran it though as they already have buses in Whitchurch-Chester

Given it's on D&Gs website and not Chaseriders website, I think we can put safely that this will be operated by Chaserider.

In terms of the depot, I'd say Crewe is best but then again, it's D&G and they have thrown curveballs in there in the past with which depots run the services.
