Very good news this. This also means there will be 5-6bph to Leighton Hospital from Crewe Bus Station (12, 12A, 13, 31, 42) and this also means that Leighton Hospital will average 9bph, and with the before mentioned 3bph along Underwood Lane and 2bph along North Street, Northern Crewe is back to adequate service levels.

With the introduction of new service 12A, this means Crewe Railway Station will average 7bph & Edleston Road (before it meets with the 8 & 39) will average 11bph.

So all round very positive changes.

Edleston Road will actually have 13 buses per hour which is quite substantial for the corridor:
12 - 1ph
12A - 2ph
13 - 1ph
37 - 1ph
38 - 1ph
84 - 2ph
84X - 2ph
85 - 1ph
103 - 2ph

The services also fit nicely at Crewe Railway Station between 37/38/85/103, reducing wait times for journeys to/from Crewe.
.
.
I wonder what the stand allocation at Crewe Bus Station will be. I assume the 13 northbound will share with 31 given they both serve the same corridor.

The 12 southbound and 39 both serve Shavington so keeping them together makes sense, alonside 13

At the moment, the 12 northbound and 85 northbound share a stand. I think the best thing to do would be:

Stand 1 - Services towards Shavington (12, 13 and 39)
Stand 2 - Services to Hanley (103)
Stand 3 - Services to Sydney (8) and Newcastle (85)
Stand 4 - Services towards Frank Webb Avenue (42 and 85)
Stand 5 - Services towards Nantwich (84 and 84X)
Stand 6 - Spare
Stand 7 - Services towards Underwood Lane (12 and 12A)
Stand 8 - Services towards North Street (13 and 31)
Stand 9 - Services towards Sandbach (37 and 38)
Stand 10 - Services towards Wistaston Green (8) and Crewe Business Park (12A)

The basic idea of improving access to the train station, and improving services along the 12 route is excellent. The execution of it though hasn't half made a confusing timetable. Is there not a simpler way they could have done it?

They could do with making it clearer that the different services between the bus station and Leighton serve different routes - a casual look at the timetable for the 12/12A/13 and you might think they all go the same way. Add in a couple of timing points to give some indication on the different routes.

They may split the timetable in due course but suspect they want to show that the number of buses between Leighton and Shavington are not changing, with just the route changes

Hopefully Cheshire East Council will put information at Crewe Bus Station and Leighton Hospital regarding the enhanced routes
.
.
Compared to 2023 (Arriva), Monday-Friday North Crewe are now served. The 84/84X corridor is now up 1, whilst 38 is down 1 (as was 1 each for Arriva and D&G). Brookhouse still down 2, replaced with Crewe Business Park up 2. Means net movements from Crewe Bus Station are similar per hour than in 2023

Still down on previous years where there were a half-hourly 85 Crewe-Nantwich (via Frank Webb Avenue), or going further back when 31/31A was half-hourly or 8/9 were separate routes

The extra college day journeys on the 1 in Stoke is very welcome. Every time Ive been on that journey in the morning the bus is completely full by Meir if not earlier. Not experienced the opposite direction at end of the day but imagine it's a similar scenario.

Appears the new timetable has been updated to show which services travel either via Underwood Lane or Broad Street.

According to BusTimes.org, these are the bus stand allocation at Crewe Bus Station from 1 September 2025:

Stand 1 - 12 (Shavington), 12A (Business Park), 13 (Shavington) and 39 (Nantwich)
Stand 2 - 103 (Hanley)
Stand 3 - 8 (Sydney) and 85 (Newcastle)
Stand 4 - 8 (Wistaston Green)
Stand 5 - 84 (Chester) and 84X (Nantwich)
Stand 6 - 42 (Congleton) and 85 (Nantwich)
Stand 7 - 12 (Leighton), 12A (Leighton) and 13 (Leighton)
Stand 8 - 31 (Northwich)
Stand 9 - 37 (Northwich) and 38 (Macclesfield)
Stand 10 - Coaches

This does seem an over intensified use of Stand 1, and not sure why 13 is not grouped with 31 at Stand 8. Also, using Stand 6 when 84/84X often have close timings could lead to overspill. Lets see how it plays out but think some refinement would be useful

An additional benefit of the timetable changes are the consistent frequencies on core corridors.

From Crewe Station to Crewe and from Crewe to Crewe Station - D&G offer a daytime frequency of a consistent every 15 minutes (12A/37/38) plus additional services from D&G 85 and First Potteries 103

Same between Leighton Hospital to Crewe and vis-versa with 12/12A/13 plus additional services on 31 and 42

Hopefully this near "turn-up and go" frequency will encourage more people to use public transport, just needs to have adequate coverage

D&G going back to 10 minutes ahead of Stagecoach. The battle keeps going

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

The intensity of this D&G and Stagecoach battle on 84 Crewe - Nantwich corridor is intriguing. Its gone from Stagecoach initially announcing the route, then D&G announcing just 2 days before both services launched, then the BSIP funded additional Chester services. Both operators have been changing their timetables to get the 10/20 benefit over the other which can't be beneficial to consumers. I don't see how both will keep the route but they've been competing for 2 and half years and it doesn't look like the battle is ending any time soon.

Initial post-Arriva plans:
Crewe-Nantwich
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:08
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:38 (to Chester)

23 April 2023:
Crewe-Nantwich
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:08
84X (D&G) - xx:28
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:38 (to Chester)
84X (D&G) - xx:58

21 July 2025:
Crewe-Nantwich
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:18 (to Chester)
84X (D&G) - xx:28
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:48 (to Chester)
84X (D&G) - xx:58

15 September 2025:
Crewe - Nantwich
84X (D&G) - xx:08
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:18 (to Chester)
84X (D&G) - xx:38
84 (Stagecoach) - xx:48 (to Chester)

Do councils have the power to force these companies to even out service levels so the Crewe to Nantwich corridor has a service every 15 minutes, or do we just have to see who gives up first?

No - they can make Traffic Regulation Order to limit access to certain highways but not to regulate as you suggest. They can act as a broker between two parties though

I'm guessing if there was a Franchising system in place then the council/authority would determine the routes and the level of service and so for routes such as Crewe to Nantwich the services would be more evenly spaced out on a common frequency rather than two operators bunched together?

What do you mean”guessing “?

That’s the point of franchising (aka direct operating contracts) in that one body has control, can set frequencies, and deliver passenger growth.

Under the Enhanced Partnership regime, it is possible for a scheme to include provisions for evening out headways. The EP could also specify a minimum level of buses per hour on a corridor and that headways need to be well spaced. Any such measures need to be agreed by the partnership (operators and local authority) according to the voting mechanism set up in that partnership.

Leicester has managed just this under its Enhanced Partnership. Route swaps, removing duplication, co-ordinated frequencies, renumbering to either remove duplication across the city or have similar numbers on routes on shared corridors have all been done without much issue as the council worked to spread the gains & benefits around the operators. Most councils aren't looking to get that involved in the bus network, either due to lack of political will or resource/experience, but there is a legal mechanism to do such if they wish.

With the 84 & 84X there is the issue that they don't follow exactly the same route, the 84x is about 5-mins quicker, so you will never get them coordinated along the entire route without slowing down the 84x. D&G being 10-mins in front from the start means they are 15-mins apart after Willaston in each direction, whether this is the best option for the passengers could be debated but I'm not sure there is a definitive answer - being 15-mins split at the start means D&G closes to 10-mins after the mid-point which is less attractive to D&G and just changes which passengers experience the slightly off-headway frequency where. What is clear is Stagecoach being 10-mins ahead is only good for Stagecoach as D&G ends up only 5-mins behind at the half-way point so D&G get less of a share and the passengers get a completely un-split timetable so the change seems to be a positive move of D&G trying to seperate themselves from the Stagecoach trips as much as possible given the difference.

Fantastic news. Only running between Sandbach and Alsager was an odd decision at the time, but I am likely to use it to get to Alsager instead of driving since it'll be a single bus.

One of Longton depots Optare Solo SRs went up in flames at Keele University yesterday.

Firefighters tackled a D&G bus blaze - with smoke spotted across North Staffordshire. Crews were scrambled to University Avenue - by Keele University's campus - yesterday morning.

Reach plc article, sorry.

Change to Service 317 from 1st November 2025

Date: 1st November 2025

From 1st November 2025 Saturday journeys on service 317 will change to serve Leighton Hospital.

This change has been funded by Cheshire East Council following requests from passengers and will introduce Saturday buses to Sandbach Heath, Elworth, Ettiley Heath and Leighton Hospital.

Weekday journeys will remain unchanged.

Click HERE for the new timetable.

New Congleton Services to Viking Park and West Heath

Date: 10th November 2025

From 10th November 2025 new services will be introduced in Congleton serving Viking Park and West Heath.

The new services are funded by Cheshire East Council.

Buses will run every 30 minutes, with route 93A running anti-clockwise via Barn Road, Wolstenholme Elmy Way, Back Lane, Longdown Road, Cumberland Road and Holmes Chapel Road, and route 93C running clockwise around the same loop. Buses will run Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays.

Click HERE for the new timetable.

I'm unsure, but suspect it is, whether the 93A/93C is funded through Section 106 contributions linked to the Barn Road development (Castle Green Homes residential, Aldi, Greggs, KFC and Starbucks)

I do believe it is linked to developer funds from these many developments.

The 317 and 93A/93C updates have vanished from the D&G site and neither appear on Cheshire East's site. Both are still on bustimes.org though. Is this a cause for concern?

They're still happening. D&G tend to only post changes 2 weeks prior to them happening so placing them 5 weeks seemed unusual.

D&G have registered to amend the 130 Macclesfield - Alderley Edge - Wilmslow - Handforth - Wythenshawe route from 23 November 2025. The filing says Wythenshaw is the end point whereas the previous registrations said Manchester Airport. Could the route be curtailed?

  • Start point: Macclesfield Bus Station
  • Finish point: Wythenshawe Interchange, Poundswick Lane, Wythenshawe
  • Via: Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Handforth, Wythenshawe

Additionally, D&G have filed for a new limited stop service 150 Macclesfield - Alderley Edge - Wilmslow Station route from 23 November 2025.

Manchester Airport I don't think was ever as well used as it could/should be for various reasons, including the fact it goes via Wythenshawe first, and also the lack of trips to the Airport (Mon-Fri it's operating hours, then Saturdays only 7 trips operate to/from the Airport). I presume if the Airport is going (based off the information you provide), it will just lead to more layover and/or longer journey times and a further slowing down of what was a reasonably quick service.

Additionally, D&G have filed for a new limited stop service 150 Macclesfield - Alderley Edge - Wilmslow Station route from 23 November 2025.
Only good reason for this would be if Alderley Park are moving their funding away from their commuter bus, and instead it's becoming the 150. Otherwise, you won't get the Alderley Park commuters (why would they use D&G when they have a subsidised commuter coach), and it just duplicates the 130. I guess we will see, but unless it's replacing Alderley Parks commuter bus, I can't see this being anything useful.

I can see why they would want to drop Manchester Airport from the route to increase the layover / punctuality / reliability on the service and have also seen the very low usage on the 130 to the Airport but it is a shame that Cheshire East will be down to one rail service and no buses serving the Airport (unless you include the 199 from Disley) , when we should be trying to encourage more Airport passengers to travel by public transport.

The new route 150 runs direct via Chester Road, rather than via Victoria Road and the hospital, between Broken Cross and Macclesfield town centre. This restores a bus service to Chester Road, which was last served in 2023 before the reorganisation of routes when Arriva withdrew from the area.

Also of note, the 130 will change route in Macclesfield Town and now run out via the train station and Hibel Road rather than running through the town (never understood why Cheshire East make buses in Macclesfield go around the world when they should be able to go up Roe Street then turn right). Also now diverts via Wilmslow Train Station.

Except that you can’t turn right off Roe St onto Churchill Way. It’s left turn only at that junction.
