I think it's fully commercial now. Prior to the Bee Network the TfGM timetable had many references to TfGM funding, but that's not there in the latest timetable. Sure I read on these forums somewhere that TfGM can't directly fund non-franchised services any more.
Correct, when Tranche 3 began TfGM withdrew the funding for the 199 which only applied to some journeys within Greater Manchester so never applied to Disley (the only section within Cheshire East), it came in after COVID around maintaining the service level to Manchester Airport and particularly the early/late timetable (the evenings were changed after the funding ended with the short trips between the Airport and Stockport being withdrawn due to the loss of that funding).

They pay Arriva for a small number of Sunday PM services on the 320. Assume they can still issue de-min contracts?

The 199 was a de-min contract, you would have to ask TfGM what the difference between those two routes was as to why one lost its funding and the other didn't.

Thanks to those who have responded to my earlier post regarding Commercial/Supported services in Cheshire East.
Last time I used the 3/103 on a Sunday was a few years ago for a short trip between Crewe and Haslington and I seem to recall there were only a couple of us onboard. That said I am aware that the route gets busier the closer it gets to Hanley.

Could the Sunday journeys on the 5, 8 and 38 have all survived as commercial services post March 2020 if Covid hadn't have occurred or is it more likely D&G would have eventually withdrawn them anyway?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the current network of Sunday services when the current BSIP/S106 funding runs out? Whether D&G will run them commercially or whether they'll simply be withdrawn again.

D&G withdrew service 312 from Wilmslow to Handforth Dean immediately after the S106 funding ran out in March 2025.

The 8 was operated commercially on a Sunday before 2020, so no reason to think that wouldn't have kept going. The 38 was extended from Crewe to Marshfield on a Sunday (part of weekday route 85), which is a service that has never returned since. There was also funding agreed for a supported Sunday service from Northwich to Shavington via Middlewich, Leighton Hospital and Crewe that was planned to start in 2020 (service 36?) but didn't go ahead because of Covid; Sunday buses to Leighton Hospital have only recently returned on the 12

Thanks for your response.

I thought the Sunday extension on the 38 was from Crewe to Nantwich (possibly via the 85 route). I understand that section of the route was supported and got cut in April 2018 when Cheshire East Council withdrew funding for supported services.

I rode the Sunday 38 when I visited Crewe in August 2018 and I'm pretty sure the route by then was just Crewe to Macclesfield and back, with the vehicle and driver doing a 5 in between 38 trips. Am pretty sure that the Sunday service to Leighton had gone by that time too

I remember that Northwich to Shavington Sunday service which due to Covid, ultimately never was. A great shame indeed.

Yeah, the 38 did run via the Marshfield estate to Nantwich up to 2018 as per the current 85. Just like the 5, 8 and 12 (or 12E), they were all supported by Cheshire East, the only time any journeys were run commercially on a Sunday was after the 2018 review. Pretty sure there was a very limited Sunday service to Leighton Hospital for a while in 2018 but not sure how long that lasted.

Once again thanks for this useful information.

Seem to recall the short lived commercial service from Crewe to Leighton only ran between April and July 2018 before D&G withdrew it.

Services 51, 52 and 53 will be changing from 27th July 2025.
The changes are being made following feedback during our first few months of operating these new services.

The route between Leighton Hospital and Nantwich will be changing with all buses operating via Wistaston and now serving Birchin Lane in Nantwich. Sainsbury's will no longer be served, but can still be accessed by changing to service 85 at Nantwich Bus Station.

Buses on service 51 will only run on schooldays. On Saturdays and during school holidays buses will instead run as service 52 to provide additional journeys via Millfields.

Nice to see all the journeys running through Wistaston. Running direct via Middlewich Road made for a slightly quicker journey but with little to no chance of picking up any custom along the way. All they need to do know is actually let the good people of Wistaston know there's bus running.

Am up in the Cheshire East area for a few days and have done several bus trips mainly on the 38.

Have noticed the last two evenings the penultimate journey from Macclesfield to Crewe has been a Solo. Do D&G routinely substitute for smaller vehicles on this route later in the evening and is the last journey from Crewe towards Macclesfield worked from the Crewe depot or the Macclesfield outstation?

D&G also still have branding on the 84x vehicles stating the service runs 7 days a week but am pretty sure the Sunday service was withdrawn some time ago so it strikes me as odd this hasn't been updated. At the same time I'm pretty sure the buses on the 12 make no reference to Sunday provision which the service now has.

There are a few late evening journeys on the 38 which are operated by Macclesfield depot - the vehicle operates 3’s and 10’s in Macc all day before going on to the 38, which would explain the smaller bus.

Thanks for clarifying this. It seems as though the 1915 and 2150 from Macclesfield and the 2035 and 2305 from Crewe are all operated by Macclesfield based vehicles.

I’ve just been looking at the updated 10 Weston to Bollington timetable on bustimes and it is broadly the same as current with an every 35 minute - 40 minute service at peak times for reliability and an every 90-120 minute Sunday service.

10 - Weston to Bollington timetable
10 - Sunday timetable

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Just to add to the above a reliable source on the Macclesfield Bus Users Group has stated that the number 19 route is to get a limited Sunday service with details to be announced in August.

Id have thought Cheshire East would have funded services which are profitable Monday-Saturday for a Sunday service first, given they would be more likely to be sustainable long term

For instance - the 85 had a Sunday service pre-COVID including the 38 extension to Nantwich via Marshfield on Sunday only. You'd have thought a 85 Nantwich - Crewe would be more likely to be profitable than a 19

First BSIP funded connections between key towns and hospitals on Sundays - 12, 38 and 130. If this round is to boost urban connectivity - and theyre doing the 10 (Macclesfield) then surely they should be looking outside of North Cheshire too

South Cheshire is denser, lower car ownership and has the bulk of the profitable bus services in the Borough. Add Middlewich which doesn't have any public transport on a Sunday and a 42 between Crewe and Middlewich via Frank Webb Avenue and Leighton would achieve greater benefits

Worth saying that there isn't much commercial stuff left in Cheshire East though. In part due to persistent failings over many years by both operators and the council.

Profitable is probably a bad word for it. More it will lose less money than the 19. If the 85 can be gotten down to < 30 minutes each way on Sundays to get a nice hourly service with 1 bus. I agree though it could be slightly better than a 19.

42 I don't think would be the best thing for Middlewich, I'd do the 37 same as Sundays. 1 bus Winsford-Middlewich which ideally links into the 38 (as this is something that the 37 has done for years on the short trips to maintain connections). The 42 would be 2 buses and it plods around areas that don't tend to use the bus much anyway. Least the 37 is, as you kind of suggested earlier, putting a Sunday service on an largely commercial route.

The bulk of the commercial services are in and around Crewe (8, 12, 31, 37, 38, 84, 84X, 85 and 103). I believe the only other CEC services that are commercial are the 3, 10, 14, 19/19A (Upton Priary section only) and 58 in Macclesfield plus the 42C (serves Handforth Dean only) and 199 (Disley).

Profitable is probably a bad word for it. More it will lose less money than the 19. If the 85 can be gotten down to :wub:0 minutes each way on Sundays to get a nice hourly service with 1 bus. I agree though it could be slightly better than a 19.
Perhaps but 35 minutes allows for 1 bus to operate every 90 minutes, which if on opposite times to 84 on a Sunday could allow a regular 45-minute service between Crewe and Nantwich

42 I don't think would be the best thing for Middlewich, I'd do the 37 same as Sundays. 1 bus Winsford-Middlewich which ideally links into the 38 (as this is something that the 37 has done for years on the short trips to maintain connections). This was more if South Cheshire only had 1 Sunday addition with BSIP, the 42 would serve Frank Webb Avenue/Rolls Avenue, which is a dense part of Crewe which the 85 does, allows Leighton to see more buses which is a strategic goal and connects to Middlewich only, largest town without a rail service in CEC. A 2-hourly could then operate including driver breaks if did Crewe - Middlewich only

Nevertheless, there are parts of the network in Crewe which would be better value for money than additional Sunday buses due to larger patronage, lower car use and higher density. An example would be increasing the support on the 84 corridor to allow an hourly bus service to return which would probably be more successful given this route has 4 buses an hour Monday-Saturday so 2 every 3 hours is a huge drop on Sundays

I have been wondering, is there any reason as to why the 12 doesn't actually serve Shavington on Sundays? If it can run virtually most of the route as far as Rope, why can't it just do all the way to Shavington for completeness? Similarly is there any reason as to why the Leighton to Sandbach section of 317 isn't served on Saturday whereas Sandbach to Alsager which from what I observed on Thursday had lighter usage, is?

Separately on Tuesday evening I ended up being stuck for over half an hour in traffic on Crewe Road, making the short trip between Crewe and Haslington. Do the 37 and 38 have extra running time built in at rush hour to take into account the heavy traffic on Crewe Road or does it have a knock on effect on the timetable for the rest of the day?

The Shavington part doesn't fit for just 1 bus and 1 driver operation on Sunday whilst maintaining a near hourly service. An extension to Shavington would require another resource.

The Saturday 317 service is funded by Section 106 contributions at the new Sainsbury's in Alsager. The Leighton extension is rumoured but would require Council funding.

Yes the 37 and 38 (plus other routes) have amended timetables for morning and evening peaks to cover the traffic

Most of these commercial services still receive a good amount of funding for various parts of the service. IF you remove all parts which get any funding, you aren't left with an awful lot.
According to their BSIP document (page 9), only 21% of services in Cheshire East are fully commercial and even those figures are skewed by them including the once per day 360 service, the 42C which serves only 3 stops in Cheshire East, and the 199 which barely serves the borough. That puts you on 13% fully commercial when you remove those with limited/little benefit to the borough. Plus the 31 is (or at least was) predominantly cross border travel rather than local Cheshire East demand.

There are commercial elements to other routes, but if Cheshire East pulled all BSIP, Section 106 developer and any other council funding (bar concessionary passes), you wouldn't be left with much.

Separately on Tuesday evening I ended up being stuck for over half an hour in traffic on Crewe Road, making the short trip between Crewe and Haslington. They increase slightly, but not by much. However D&G timetables are generally well padded to start with (for example, on Tuesday afternoon, the 15:35 38 left Crewe 4 mins late, got to Haslington on time but still got into Sandbach 6 minutes early, sat for a minute at both Arclid Crossroads & West Heath, then still got into Congleton Bus Station 6 minutes early https://bustimes.org/services/38-crewe-macclesfield/vehicles?date=2025-07-15#journeys/751818638).

Looking at bustimes tracking for Tuesday evening though, the bus that seemed to pick up the most delay that evening was the 17:20 37 from the bus station which did take a while to get alone Crewe Road. And this bus was back ontime by Sandbach Railway Station and indeed got to Middlewich Bull Ring early and so it was back to time pretty quickly.

It wouldn't surprise me if the reason the 19 has been chosen is because a low level service could be bolted onto the Sunday 130 board without requiring an extra bus or driver (standalone the Sunday 130 has scope to have better utilisation). Possibly only to Upton though, not to Prestbury.

I just want to take the time to confirm that my plans for a limited Sunday service in Upton Priory and Prestbury does not include the service 19. Exact details to be announced in August but what I will say is that it will be a monthly Free bus service from Hazel Grove - Poynton - Adlington - Prestbury - Upton Priory to the Treacle Market in Macclesfield from 28th September (providing all goes to plan)

This will be operated by my preserved Optare Solo entirely out of my pocket. For the following reasons:

1) This gives my bus something to do rather than just sit in a yard

2) Why not do a good deed for the community!

This service has been in the making for a few months now with local town councils and Cheshire East in the know to ensure it operates efficiently.

Plans were for it to go through Bollington but the introduction of the number 10 service on Sunday has gave me the opportunity to route the free bus via somewhere without an existing Sunday service.

**I did want to confirm this all in August but due to the speculation about service 19 I thought I should get this clarified**

Kind regards

Thanks for the update! Is there a similar scheme planned for Crewe during Makers Market (serving areas of North Crewe which don't have a Sunday bus?)

Do you know the other D&G changes planned for September?

I wouldn’t know unfortunately but I’ve been planning this Treacle Market service for a while now and am looking forward for it to materialise.

This service isn’t a scheme as such, it’s just me wanting to give it something to do every month. Hopefully it will be a nice day out for the regular 391 punters and also a few of the Belle Vue staff when they aren’t working.

They could possibly run the bus via the old 44 route via the main road to Shavington although it could be a bit of a squeeze time wise. It also depends on whether the demand from Shavington was better than that from Fuller Dive and Whirlow Road.

As anticipated the new No 10 Weston - Bollington bus registration has appeared on bustimes , although surprisingly it states that there is no subsidy for the new service from Cheshire East Council. This seems surprising given the addition of a Sunday service and the service being billed as a partnership between Cheshire East Council & D&G.

No 10 bus registration

Anybody know anything about that transfer with 593 to High Peak? I wonder why it's been transferred unless now they've said they want their 6 cylinders back.
