I wouldn't wish that on the Driver. Perhaps just a glancing blow and a leg off, or something.... Then he could be a 'lucky miraculous survivor' and no longer an idiot with a pushbike.
I feel that a hardening of public attitudes regarding this sort of thing would help, especially when it ends fatally.
A bit less "loving father killed by train, three children left fatherless" and a bit more "idiot killed by own stupidity"
When they survive, as in this case, I feel that prosecution should be the norm, and I would hope that the courts impose a substantial fine. Jail should be considered for any repeat offenders.

Interesting - I think I see what this post might be getting at. However, I am curious to know what Gemz91 would suggest the attributes of a true cyclist might be. Feel free to include references to the Highway Code, traffic lights and pavements.
Is a similar distinction proposed for motorists? I seem to encounter a distressingly high incidence of people "who just drive a car" and appear to have minimal powers of anticipation or knowledge of the rules of the road and zero consideration for other road users.
I think people would draw their own conclusions and if BTP manage to identify this individual I would think that there is every likelihood that he will be prosecuted. Of course he may have mental health issues and it's probably best not to jump to conclusions.

A cyclist is someone who is riding a bicycle.
The attempt to frame cyclists as only those cyclists who never behave irresponsibly is likely as a response to those who succumb to the sweeping generalisation fallacy, and use one irresponsible cyclist as an excuse to demonise all cyclists (i.e. the Daily Mail-like demonisation of a minority tactic). I ride a bicycle occasionally, and have no connection whatsoever to the pillock who jumped the barriers, why should I, or any other cyclist, be held responsible for his behaviour? Cyclists, like motorists, pedestrians, politicians, and rail staff are all individuals, and the behaviour of one bears no relation to the behaviour of any other.

Apparently he ended up having to use it as the train driver applied the emergency brakes and blocked the crossing.
The reason "cyclist" in the headline winds people up is his mode of transport is not relevant to the incident. I expect he drives a car too so "Motorist almost gets hit by train after jumping barriers" would be just as accurate. For all we know he's just pushing a bike (might not even be his) to his car. He tries to mount the bike on the crossing (not sure why as he would have had another barrier to negotiate) but at all other points in the video he's just a pedestrian with a bike.
A better and neutral headline would be "Man almost gets hit by train after jumping barriers" but of course that doesn't get the clicks they want.
As you can imagine the tabloid comment sections are full of the usual "don't pay road tax", "jump red lights", "above the law" twaddle that all cyclists get tarred with because one clearly disturbed bloke with a bike does something stupid at a level crossing.
