Is the Cumbrian Coast ready for the enthusiast influx I wonder, especially at the moment with hardly any Mainline Steam in the North and reduced Diesel charters for entertainment.:lol:

Will these trains have window bars? Sorry if I've missed it

They WILL have window bars unfortunately due to clearance issues on part of the northern section of line between Carlisle and Sellafield, any stock running has to be fitted with them or not have windows which you are able to put your head out off :cry:

That certainly was historically the case, and I have little doubt they will have barred windows, but the SA, at least as currently published on-line, doesn't actually say that.
;
What it actually says is
;
MARYPORT To Carlisle South Jn
Restricted clearances exist between certain trains and infrastructure on this section of line. The operation of a
Departmental or passenger train movement that includes within the formation any former passenger carrying vehicles with
drop light windows (including Mark 2 air conditioned vehicles), requiring to operate between Maryport and Carlisle (in
either direction), is authorised to proceed subject to the timely and formal issue of a Special Notice to all parties that
MUST include the following:
• The Person in Charge of the train must ensure that all droplight windows are closed and that they remain
closed.
• The Person in Charge of the train must also ensure that the persons occupying the vehicles have been advised
not to lean out or extend anything out of any window.
• In connection with the operation of a train comprised of Mark 2 air conditioned vehicles, the organiser must
arrange for Stewards to be positioned at each door of every vehicle to enforce the restriction.
• The Person in Charge of the train must brief everyone on board, including the Train Crew, to ensure these
instructions are adhered to.
Compliance to the above especially amends ‘Table D3 – Route clearance of coaching stock’ as published in Module
NWRC of the LNW(N) Sectional Appendix.
;
The reference to table D3 is that it shows mk.2s as only permitted ECS.

Hi,

Will the 07:18 Whitehaven to Carlisle be loco-hauled (05:46 from BIF)?

I was in the WTH ticket off yesterday and the woman said it wouldn't be???

Also, why has this been re-timed from 07:24 to 07:18? Is it because it no longer splits having come in from BIF but instead comes from MRY instead?

Thanks

See Post #85 where you will find the info on diagrams. The answer is Yes.

Initial formation will be:
class 37/BSO/TSO/TSO/TSO/class 37
as the DBSOs are not yet available.

So looking at realtime trains only 1 loco hauled train has run to time so far today, the diagram listed as set 2 on here is accumulating more and more delays with the limited turn around time at each end not giving much opportunity to make up time, now running about 30 late. It must be all the punters trying to get to grips with the new state of the art doors on those trains:lol: and dragging around another loco on the back:lol:

Came across the 1005 Barrow LHCS at Preston today.
The stock had an "Operated by Northern" sticker in one window bay of each coach, and the logos of Northern and DfT on the carriage ends.
Made a right racket leaving, with a lot of smoke pollution (37 605).
It was ready to leave on time but delayed 5 mins by late running VT/TPE northbound services.

They'll soon get used to the state of the art doors. Particularly if the alternative is a Pacer.

Might not be so keen on set 2 being 40 mins late though so far, looks like its delaying the unit behind it as well.

Those stickers are in a silly place - they'll block kids' views out of what are quite high windows in aircon Mk2s. Would make sense to move them (if removable) to the top.

Vertical window bars look like they will make opening the door awkward (is there an inside handle fitted?) - the more usual horizontal ones that Southern used to use would perhaps be better?

I doubt a delay of that sort will be down to unfamiliarity with the doors though.

I would have thought that horizontal bars would make it more difficult to stick your hand downward to open the door. The Southern units with window bars all had internal door handles.

Maybe or maybe not, that diagram has been struggling to keep time all day and loosing more and more time, left Barrow on the final working back to Carlisle 42 late, a lot of station stops seem to be reported as taking 2 to 3 mins but are not timed for that. The other left on time and is only 3 min's late so far but does have the advantage of a long break at Barrow,

Sounds like they need to tweak the timetable to me then.

In their final days, the Southern CIGs got window bars and did not have internal handles.

The other difference of course with the Cumbrian stock is that the window bars have been installed on the inside of the doors rather than the outside, however the vertical bars means less impediment on getting your shoulder in the right place to use the handle.
