Good that window bars have cropped up. I had wondered about that; the class 108s, in addition to bars over the droplights had screws inserted across the ventilator slot above the windows; if I recall correctly, just about where the arrows were on the sign above, indicating that any further opening would cause a draught.

the loco hauled workings now look like
'
;
sx
11.38 Barrow-Carlisle
14.35 Carlisle-Barrow
17.31 Barrow-Carlisle
;
nb 07.24 Whitehaven-Barrow starts Maryport with ecs from Whitehaven rather than Carlisle at 06.15 as suggest by diagrams initially quoted
;

05.46 Barrow-Carlisle - now timed loco hauled
08.42 Carlisle-Barrow - ecs to and from CS
14.37 Barrow-Carlisle
17.37 Carlisle-Barrow
;
SO
05.46 Barrow-Carlisle
08.42 Carlisle-Barrow
11.38 Barrow-Carlisle
14.31 Carlisle-Barrow
17.32 Barrow-Carlisle
;
05.15 Carlisle-Barrow
08.45 Barrow-Carlisle
11.56 Carlisle-Lancaster
17.31 Lancaster-Barrow.
;
I was going to suggest the problem was that the train planning rules show Carlisle-Workington opening at 05.20, but Wigton not open until 05.30 in the signalbox compendium (known to be rather erratic) but perhaps they have just put the 05.15 in as SO in error.

The weekday workings can't possibly be those in the previous post.
Both start at Barrow, but they end up one at each end.
There has to be at least one more southbound working in addition to those.

That's exactly what I am saying - the 05.15 Carlisle is missing SX, presumably because it means amending the first trip of the Dalston tanks, not that seems to have stopped them publishing the times on Saturdays with both leaving Carlisle at 05.15.

Official advice from Northern, not from a driver or guesswork , is that it is the 05.59 Maryport they plan to start back.

Journey time Carlisle to Maryport is just over 40 mins, so 05:15 off CAR would be right. This service gets to Sellafield in time for an 07:00 kick off. The old trial one used to get there in time for an 08:00 start, so either the shift pattern has changed or they are going to get there ridiculously early.

There's a bit of confusion at half eleven at Barrow. Currently showing as below:

WTT 1132 Carlisle 3 2C40 NT Terminates here
WTT 1128 Morecambe 1 2C47 NT Carlisle 1131
WTT Starts here 3 2C49 NT Carlisle 1138
WTT Starts here 1 5C47 NT Barrow C.S. 1142

2 trains to CAR in 7 mins!
the first service is the loco hauled from CAR terminating on 3, showing as loco and correct.
the second service is the unit from Morecambe which should now show as terminating on 1 rather than going through to CAR.
the third service is the loco hauled (same set) returning to CAR from 3 again correct.
the fourth is the unit from Morecambe going from 1 to the sidings, correctly entered time wise, but erroneously showing as loco hauled.

Once you've sorted this out the diagrams are:

dia 1
05.15 Carlisle-Barrow
14.37 Barrow-Carlisle
17.37 Carlisle-Barrow

dia 2
05.57 Barrow-Carlisle
08.42 Carlisle-Barrow
11.38 Barrow-Carlisle
14.35 Carlisle-Barrow
17.31 Barrow - Carlisle

This works perfectly, one starting and one finishing at each end and the sets swapping diagrams every day to make maintenance/changeovers nice and convenient.

Essentially correct with some minor timing changes, apart from the 0515 Carlisle to Preston, then 1004 Preston to Barrow, stable, then 1437 to Carlisle. Quoted from fourfoot eight and a half forum.

Ahh, I did wonder if a return trip to Lancaster or Preston might be squeezed in there. Makes sense to use the set instead of sitting idle at BIF for a couple of hours. It also means that the 11.28 (from Morecambe) arrival at BIF and ecs move to the sidings is actually the 10:04 ex Preston, so is loco hauled after all......

Try this. Have read elsewhere:-

05 15 Carlisle to Preston
10 04 Preston to Barrow (NOT SHOWN IN RTT OR JOURNEY PLANNER)
(SO WATCH THIS SPACE)
14 37 Barrow to Carlisle
17 37 Carlisle to Barrow

05 46 Barrow to Carlisle
08 42 Carlisle to Barrow
11 38 Barrow to Carlisle
14 35 Carlisle to Barrow
17 31 Barrow to Carlisle.

2C41 14:37 BIF CAR 17:28
2C42 17:37 CAR BIF 20:29
5C42 ecs to BIF sidings

5C33 ecs from BIF sidings

2C34 14:35 CAR BIF 17:22
2C47 17:31 BIF CAR 20:31

The exact timings depend on where you look, there's the odd min or 2 discrepancy.

There are loco hauled(s) on a Sat, but the diagrams are different.
Looks like:

2C33 0546 BIF CAR 0833
2C40 0842 CAR BIF 1130
2C45 1138 BIF CAR 1424
2C34 1433 CAR BIF 1723
2C47 1732 BIF CAR 2029

2C32 0515 CAR BIF 0804
2C41 0845 BIF CAR 1135
2C48 1156 CAR LAN 1608
2C31 1731 LAN BIF 1840

but there are a couple of slight anomalies, so these might be not quite right yet.

Is there a reason why they seem to be running loco hauled on the Barrow terminators - which seem to be 153's a lot of the time, rather than the Lancaster trains which usually justify a 156 ?

What does ecs mean?

ECS means Empty Carriage Stock. The full diagrams are now shown in the "Frequently requested Diagrams" thread. The 05 15 ex Carlisle obviously passes through Wigton so the opening hours must be altering.

Actually they aren't.
Some of them are services that used to run through, but are now terminating at Barrow for a unit forward or vice-versa.
One service up to Carlisle used to be from Morecambe for example.
Turning them round at Barrow means fewer crews need training too.

Actually I was mistaken - I was working on the assumption that the last Carlisle signal was probably somewhere just south of Currock, but in fact it is possible to send the train to CE346 south of Dalston or thinking about it more, even Wigton's first signal, before it opens - just hope the signaller's car doesn't break down!.

Thanks, that's interesting.

Are they likely to connect with a Northern Rail service to Lancaster, or have the TPE's swapped around to connect ?

There are some anomalies in the originally posted diagrams for the Cumbrian LHCS. Confirmed diagrams below:

Monday - Friday:
Set 1:
- 0515 Carlisle-Preston.
- 1004 Preston-Barrow.
- 1437 Barrow-Carlisle.
- 1737 Carlisle- Barrow.
Set 2:
- 0546 Barrow-Carlisle.
- 0842 Carlisle-Barrow.
- 1139 Barrow-Carlisle.
- 1435 Carlisle-Barrow.
- 1731 Barrow-Carlisle

Saturday:
Set 1:
- 0546 Barrow-Carlisle
- 0841 Carlisle-Barrow
- 1138 Barrow-Carlisle
- 1433 Carlisle-Barrow
- 1732 Barrow-Carlisle
Set 2:
- 0515 Carlisle-Barrow
- 0845 Barrow-Carlisle
- 1156 Carlisle-Lancaster
- 1731 Lancaster-Barrow
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Good move in the M-F diagram is that there is a +6 between set 1 on the 1004 PRE-BIF and set 2 on the 1139 BIF-CAR
