Sorry neither of those are right.

Clue 2

In steam days you could see a Grange on the nearby viaduct - in fact, you still can!

Still nope. Maybe it should have read "You could see a Grange FROM the nearby viaduct" -

The solution's in Tier 3 but is just across the water from Tier 2

Sorry ignore that last clue it's not accurate as I've placed it in the wrong county - just!

Johnnychips has it, and the anagram. I did think that Arnside was in Lancashire and Grange (over Sands) in Cumbria but then I realised this wasn't where the county boundary lies. Trip workings from Carnforth to Grange and Ulverston were still steam-hauled across Arnside Viaduct right into the very final week of BR steam.

Over to Johnny.

O spherae ! -- ?? Desperation strikes: I suggest Feniton -- nearest station to the village of Beer...

I'd suggest Ellon, Aberdeenshire: "Elon" plus, within the name, another small "l", which could be seen as a -- vertical -- shaft; but the station concerned -- with the Dyce to Fraserburgh line on which it lay -- lost its passenger service in 1965 !

Elgin, then? Part, "plus", of Elon -- EL**N -- but beyond that, I'm blessed if I know why...

Nobody want to take this on? Think of the famous Godfather family for a start then do the subtraction.

Famous godfather family = Corleone, so take of the one and you get Corle
Kate Bush's first album = the Kick
