I see all now -- but don't think I'd ever have got the right answer via any of your above layings-out-with-great-lucidity (not adversely criticising you -- it was me being thick !). Would certainly have never made the "polecat" link -- was thinking too zoologically, and not laterally enough.

It is difficult to find a good probability-of-someone-actually-getting-the-answer-although-not-too-easy type clue, and preferably only one of them. I guess that's half the fun.
