So interesting times ahead, well for the next 5 months! with TFL turning at Brentwood, and a bus shuttle to Shenfield (10 mins allowed for the run)
No OHL in place until May, and of course some of the connections twixt the old 'E' lines and 'M' lines out of use, at least until May, so 2 track railway, Shenfield - Gidea (minimum)

Already been trial runs of late night GA Southend up and down services stopping at Brentwood additionally. Also had trial runs of failures jamming up the entire service because of the lack of cross overs. So now those bugs have been ironed out, contingency plans will be in place and it will all be fine. Don't know what you are worrying about. ;)

Can't wait for the first container train to get stuck at the bottom of Brentwood bank, with no way of getting past it...

Which is why there is a Freightliner standby loco at Shenfield. It has been there for the past couple of months, as the junctions at the London end of Shenfield have been out of use for a while already.

Even with that loco there, you are looking at 45 mins minimum before the 'failure' would be anywhere near moving off again !

Quicker than normal then ;)

Of course it's not ideal, but the London End of Shenfield is being completely rebuilt to a totally different layout. A huge task.

Indeed. A popular saying involving omelettes and eggs comes to mind. :)

of course the major part of the work is CROSSRAIL work, so really passengers that are being 'diverted' should not have a pop at NR, its the 'new' build railway line that is the cause surely ?

Whilst undoubtedly nothing would have happened without Crossrail, everyone benefits from the final layout. All GA trains to Southend can run to platform 4 at 50 mph without conflicting with the Shenfield terminators, which should help the evening peak particularly flow much better through Shenfield.

Watching a freightliner run up main to the up electric line at 50 mph will be entertaining too, if you like watching that sort of thing.

Cant some 315s be moved elsewhere now? as less will be required if only running to brentwood rather than shenfield

That was for Gidea Park Junction OLE Renewal. As I recall there were two fatalities (suicides) whilst this was going on which virtually closed the GEML and certainly split it in two.

QUOTE FROM NETWORK RAIL - 3pm Monday
As we stand the OLE works at Gidea are finished and all on plan for the Shenfield works. But more welding and we then run some proving trains. Last check to re-energise from 2200.
My area director is in our control at Romford from 1600 to ensure a good hand vet from the projects teams.

The class 66 is normally being given a warm up at about 8.20am when I arrive at platform 1 of a weekday morning. I wondered what is was there for, now I know.

Re stopping at Brentwood - will the GA mainline Southend and Ipswich direction trains be stopping at Brentwood until May?

Anyone have a diagram for the final layout at Shenfield, I've looked and failed to find one.

I assume the majority of the track work was completed over Christmas.

The double failure that occurred back in Nov/Dec was a complete fiasco. Delays amounted to several hours for many, one guy I know got back to Ipswich after 10, usually he'd be there 7ish! Dealing with a sandwich of trains with incompatible couplings is always going to be a fiasco. I am surprised that the level of risk was agreed, not withstanding longer term benefits.

I had a look as my train stopped yesterday, not as much progress as I imagined but I suppose these things take time. Platforms 4 & 5 have been cordoned off (discrete worksite) with the OLE removed country end and on to the down Southend dive-under. At the London end both sets of EL to ML crossovers have either been completely removed or taken out of use. Some new single line connections from the UE (plat 4) to the DM have been installed but are not yet commisioned. Most (if not all) of the OLE on the open running lines has been replaced with the new F&F style. Operationally the stations is (except the closure of plats 4 & 5 and the ELs to Brentwood) the same as before Christmas; i.e. only MLs (plats 1,2 & 3) in use with down Southend services using 3 then crossing over to the Southend line on the flat. There are lots of track panels and new switches around the site to be installed over the coming weeks.

Does anyone know how long the GEML will be shut at weekends for this work? It is a pain and some travelling via Ingatestone every weekend. It's a poor enough service on Sundays as it is when running! Let alone the wait at Newbury park 4 half hour, to get a coach which then makes you wait 15m @ Ingatestone!

This is not the old NR plan but my version based upon what's going in on the ground at the moment, the new S&C that is being installed but not yet commissioned. The old double crossings at the London end have been removed and new single leads have started to be installed. I admit it may not be perfect but unless NR are going to be taking up much of the track laid over the Christmas shutdown I think it's pretty close.

At least until the late May Bank Holiday (though not every weekend) which is when TfL say their services will be restored to Shenfield.

I managed to get back to Shenfield today and had a closer look this is how I think the final layout will be, don't shoot the messenger if I've got any of the detail wrong!

Good try, but not quite.

The main difference is Platforms 5 and 6 will have access to and from the main lines. Move some of your pointwork around and you'll achieve that.

All the planned work was achieved in the Christmas blockade. About 10 switches and a fixed diamond were installed, others taken out and some big steel structures for the OLE erected. A good effort.

Just the same platform extensions as up and down the rest of the line. Other stations are getting lifts where none existed and bridges upgraded but I think Romford has a good ramp system already in place from the tunnels.

Of course they've had the ROC, so they're already far ahead for imposing erections anyway.

Somewhat unfortunate last part of final sentence?:D

When I have to stray to the east end. I find the footbridge at Forest Gate a bit tiring ( old fella ) Anyone know how long the work will take
They have been at it a year and only seem to have demolished the staircases
