I had a call from the cross country recruitment team (I saved the number in my phone when then they called). I know the medical number is from a private number so just watching out for that.

Does anyone know what time the classroom part of the course is? I have childcare responsibilities that I need to organise.

The classroom part is in Derby and you’re normally expected to stay in a hotel there for the week and travel home at weekends.

It’s roughly a 15 week course including one / two weeks off in the middle. You are expected to lodge in the hotel. I lived 20 mins on a train away and still had to.
Most days start from 0800 - 0900 and finish around 1500. You tend to finish early on a Friday so people can travel home.
It might be worth a conversation about childcare and lodging as soon as possible.

Thank for this I’ll chase it up as we have limited help with childcare and we both work full time. This may be a case of short term pain for long term gain. After the classroom phase (should I be successful) what are the expectations then? Would it be dependant on the depot or is there a pretty rigid structure in place?
After the classroom phase you will go to depot and be allocated a mentor to complete your handling hours. You will follow your mentors shift pattern including earlies and lates and perform all the duties you will be doing once a qualified driver.

You’re aware that the railway is shift work and unsociable hours, did you not discuss this and your possible requirements versus theirs at interview? You may need to contact them sooner rather than later and have the conversation. If you have limited childcare options and your partner works full time, you may have issues regarding the shift work you’ll be expected to do.

I’ve worked shift work so that’s not the issue. It’s the short notice. I had DMI last week and offered a place on the course 2 days later. I’m just trying to get my ducks in a row to make sure I can get the required childcare. I wasn’t aware I’d have to stay away from home either. It’s all short term for the greater good I know. I don’t want to be in a situation where we are caught short in regards to childcare. Fail to prepare prepare to fail etc.

Ahhhh, I understand now. Your only option is to speak to them and see what they say. Hopefully it’ll work out for you, good luck with it.

Is it only 15 weeks in Derby? I thought it was closer to 30 plus weeks! Or is that total time in training?

The first 15/16wks are usually your rules course. You’ll move to handling (driving) thereafter, but I can’t speak for the length of that as it varies and depends on your depot, routes and instructor availabilit.

I spoke to the recruitment team yesterday and they said they used to insist on all candidates staying in a hotel but that policy is only for those who live further away. On my course there are 1 Manchester, 2 Bournemouth that will need to and 2 Birmingham and 1 Leicester that won’t. Hope this help others with domestic commitments

if you have to go to Derby for the training and expected to lodge in the hotel is that provided by the TOC? Does anyone know which hotel it is/location?

It’s all paid for. It’s normally Leonardo Hotel.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner and taxis are provided too. You are well looked after

Thanks for that. Thought it was 8 months in the classroom in Derby, must have got my wires crossed somewhere.
