In day 2 of the Hampshire v Lancashire match, Lancashire seemed to be on line in response to the Hampshire all out total of 389 and after 38 overs, had reached 102-1.

Then the usual batting disaster occurred and after 49 overs, they found themselves at 122-6....<(
Lancashire are clearly in the wrong division, perhaps limiting promotion to a single county or perhaps a play off system would prevent such inequal match ups.

Close of play, and England are 25-1, a lead of 256. Although it isn't going to affect the outcome of this match, but once again, a very slow over rate from England. Isn't it time something was done about this?

Quite probably for Lancashire. Perhaps (another) rebuild is coming

However it was still a very good day of cricket, most notably due to the sublime all-round performance of Liam Dawson..

He protected number 11 Abbas from the strike and scored a controlled but occasionally brutal hundred. After the new ball he bowled 28 overs uninterrupted from the Jimmy Anderson end, taking 4 wickets for not very many runs.

An update to this Lancashire debacle on their home ground in beautiful sunny weather on day 4.

Lancashire, being all out for 200 in their first innings were made to follow-on by Hampshire, 189 runs behind. The usual batting collapse followed the now-normal pattern and they were all out for 152 in their second innings.

Hampshire won by an innings and 37 runs. This is the fifth Lancashire defeat this season in eleven County Championship Division One matches played....

Another century for Root (103) in England’s second innings. Sri Lanka are 53-2 at close of play, still 430 runs behind England, who should get the remaining 8 wickets tomorrow!

Lunch interval latest score....136-4 (Two sessions today and three sessions tomorrow still to play).

Still 2 days left, so the weather shouldn’t be too much of a factor! Forecast for Sunday is mainly dry and bright, with perhaps the occasional shower.

I see Lords is half empty if not more, why don't they lower prices to get people in when it's a forgone conclusion? Some test grounds have done this before, got in at Old Trafford once for £10, and that was the ashes.

These will have been on day 5, for which I don’t think tickets are sold in advance. Today there are lots of people who have already paid £££, so do they get a refund?

Why not? A couple of years ago I bought tickets for the last day of a test at the Oval, and then they decided not to charge and gave a full refund to those who'd already paid. They do the same when refunds are due because there hasn't been a full day of play, so no reason not to do it to reduce the price and get a crowd in. I'm sure the food and drink vendors would prefer a big crowd.

Indeed. And if they had offered tickets at around the £25 to £30 mark, that would be me and Mrs H sorted for the day.
They mentioned ticket prices on TMS a while back.
Just had look at prices, cheapest is £115

Anyone hear the Jonathan Agnew wind-up on TMS a few minutes ago?

Signed another promising young Leicestershire player?!?
I meant trying to lose.

Mind you, both spinners, Liam Patterson-White and Farhan Ahmed were the only bowlers used this morning during the Surrey innings. Took all 9 wickets that fell, before Surrey declared.

During the tea interval on TMS, Aggers interviewed a spokesperson for Lords (I assume, as I didn't catch the intro). It was something of an exercise in defensive corporate waffle, full of "conducting reviews" and looking for "learning outcomes" rather than concede they might have got the price strategy wrong.

She finished by saying that it was good that they'd started to offer admission on the gate for £15. Unfortunately with only three Sri Lankan wickets left that didn't look like a good bet. In the event, it would have bought you a maximum of half an hour's cricket, less your travelling time to Lords.

Atkinson 62-5 becomes only the third player to score a hundred and take 5 wickets in the same Test at Lords.

Are the Lord's honour boards going to be called to Gus Atkinson achievement boards from now on?

3 five-for's, a 10-for and a century in just 2 matches at Lords.

I know one of them is Beefy, forget the name of the overseas player. I would have thought more, so this really prestigious.
Mr. Hoff from the MCC telling him off for walking behind the bowler’s arm and across the pitch.
Aggers sussed it out early because of 'grammatical errors' that wasnt in keeping with the MCC amongst other things. The Mr Hough / Mr Hoff who signed the letter- Aggers asked if anyone knew him at the MCC, I was trying to suss it out, until some said 'Oh yes, Jack' - cue muffled background laughter.

He’s the only the third Englishman to do it in test history (at any ground).

The other two being Tony Greig, and Botham (5 times).

There should be a law against corporate waffle (I could use a stronger term) and anyone finishing with "lessons will be learned" should go in the same cell.
Just once, in any walk of life, I'd like someone up top to admit "yes, we messed it up and although there's not much can be done right now, next time you'll see a vast improvement and if we don't I'll resign".

One day.

Meanwhile it's looking uber-gloomy for the planks at Lancs especially with Worcs winning; Even if we won the 20's which we won't it's still a shameful season. Doesn't help when you have Buttler, Livingstone, Salt and Wood on your books but never get to see them. Why do counties persist on having stay-aways on their books??

I believe there is an expectation that players who play for / want to be considered for England need to be contracted to a county somewhere, so someone has to do it.

I can see the logic that they need to have some kind of home base where they can train and play if required, even if it's rare.

I am not sure of the exact details but I don't think it ends up actually costing the counties that much when these players are away all the time - they get some kind of compensation.

(snip)

However the Sky cricket coverage is more and more about T20 and The Hundred and I don't like these formats either, so perhaps I'll stop paying, and then F1 will go out of the window too.

I'm probably way behind everyone else, but I only found out fairly recently that most county championship matches, and quite a few T20 blast and one day cup matches, are streamed live on YouTube. The exceptions are mostly the higher profile matches that are live on Sky. The presentation is quite low key, but I generally prefer that to excessive excitability (e.g. Talksport 2 commentaries), and there's a graphic with current scores on screen so you can avoid the commentary entirely if you so wish. I've watched more "live" cricket on screen this summer than in any year since test matches left Channel 4.

Absolutely, this has been a massive plus for me since I don't live in the UK, so can't get Sky and only get over a couple of times a year to watch live.

The quality varies depending on investment, so Lancs TV is highly professional with multiple cameras controlled by an editing suite and a studio with guests - not quite up to Sky quality but certainly a professional TV presentation.

Others such as Derbyshire are much more basic but they too now use more than one camera and it is completely acceptable.

There is also a big myth that this is somehow free - well, it's free to watch but the counties make money from it from YouTube views and their own additional advertising and sponsorship.

I believe 1 million YouTube views earns around £5,000 to the creator, give or take a little.

You might think, "Where do a million views come from" but Lancashire are well aware of this and are ahead of the curve as they are targeting the Indian market - they even sent a broadcasting team out to India for a pre-season game and had the studio at Old Trafford up and running with guests in the early hours of the morning.

There is also something in India called FanCode which I believe streams at least some of this stuff in India and again you may wonder who would watch it but, a) this is India we are talking about and b) it is connected to some kind of immensely popular fantasy cricket competition.

The simple answer is to contract the players directly to the organisation of the national side. Make it clear to those players that they have the choice of accepting being employees of a national cricket body or employees of a County Championship side with the benefits such as pension rights.

Going back to the current test series, the BBC seems to have got into a muddle with the names of the Sri Lanka players. I know these are complex and often very long. On the BBC Sport website page, opening batter Nishan Madushka is shown as such at the foot of the page where the teams are listed, but on the actual scorecard he appears as KNM Fernando. It seems that both are correct but there should be consistency, especially as there are two other Fernandos in the squad and both played in the first test. In the second test Pathum Nissanka is also shown as Silva, again confusing as the captain is de Silva. Also the names on the players' shirts don't seem to match what's shown on the scorecard! Anyone else noticed this?

Rather a one-sided series so far and a great start to the test careers of Smith and Atkinson, although there are tougher challenges ahead.
