At one time it seemed inconceivable, but the gap has closed fast (some cheap wickets against Ireland helped, of course). Maybe Jimmy should retire gracefully at Old Trafford to avoid the indignity of being dropped (not "rested") for the final match.

Woakes already has fantastic bowling and batting averages at Old Trafford. It was a shame that Anderson could not make a breakthrough, but after his first two or three overs Broad looked much the more likely to take wickets, which he did, including his 600th in tests.

Economy is good for keeping the opposition in check, but wickets are needed to win matches. Maybe you could present an aggregate analysis (all bowlers) for seven Australian innings.

Even when I eventually managed to rise to the dizzy heights of the Middleton 2nd XI in the Central Lancashire League in the early 1960s in my late teens, the pro at the time always kept stressing the benefit of a bowler who could tie down the opposition at one end, whilst the other bowlers could wicket-take at the other end.

It’s a weird one to say but I regard Crawley as the best Bazballer. He’s streaky, but he’s naturally positive, looks to get set by scoring and crucially doesn’t play stupid shots (which is an annoyingly common feature of our middle order).

Those partnerships with Moeen and Root (two knocks of high class as well) had hardly a single silly shot. Elegant and free scoring perfection.

The Aussies did seem to lose the plot a bit. I expect England will have a good thrash this morning and aim to declare after lunch. Tomorrow looks like a write off weather wise and Sunday looks patchy.

Mitchell Starc seemed to have two injuries as the day went on, on the second day. He is a big lad and must have jarred something when attempting to stop a boundary when he fell heavily. He did make a return, but went off again when he was unable to throw a ball back to the bowler when fielding.
