Stubborn as mules

Absolutely, a very important position, Bairstow's having a shocker both behind and in front of the stumps. So still not picking our best keeper when we have to take 20 wickets in a must win game.
So we have Mooen, they have Marnus, at number 3. Ummm. Have to hope Mooen gets among the wickets - the weather forecast doesn't sound too conducive to spin bowling. I expect Australia to drop Murphy and bring Green back, or maybe Boland.England make just one change for the Fourth Test at Old Trafford, with Anderson replacing Robinson. Warner 32. c: Wheelie Bin b: BroadWhen does England's 12th man drag a wheelie bin out behind the stumps? It wouldn't be any worse than Bairstow.
Woakes actually.Warner 32. c: Wheelie Bin b: Broad
Woakes already has fantastic bowling and batting averages at Old Trafford. It was a shame that Anderson could not make a breakthrough, but after his first two or three overs Broad looked much the more likely to take wickets, which he did, including his 600th in tests.Day ends 299-8, Starc and Cummins still at the crease (2 no.8s).
Wood not ineffective but taken to by batters, happy to use the pace of the ball. Woakes once again excellent with a 4-fer.
Comparison at end of Australia's first innings....Anderson still wicketless, taken few in the series, greatly outbowled by Broad. Can he be caught before Broad retires? At one time it seemed inconceivable, but the gap has closed fast (some cheap wickets against Ireland helped, of course). Maybe Jimmy should retire gracefully at Old Trafford to avoid the indignity of being dropped (not "rested") for the final match.
I'm not sure what point is being made, as in addition to "wicketless so far" in this match, I commented on Anderson's relative performance over the series. Economy is good for keeping the opposition in check, but wickets are needed to win matches. Maybe you could present an aggregate analysis (all bowlers) for seven Australian innings.Comparison at end of Australia's first innings....
Anderson.....20 - 4 - 51- 1.....Econ rate 2.55
Wood..........17 - 5 - 60 - 1....Econ rate 3.53
Even when I eventually managed to rise to the dizzy heights of the Middleton 2nd XI in the Central Lancashire League in the early 1960s in my late teens, the pro at the time always kept stressing the benefit of a bowler who could tie down the opposition at one end, whilst the other bowlers could wicket-take at the other end.I'm not sure what point is being made, as in addition to "wicketless so far" in this match, I commented on Anderson's relative performance over the series. It’s a weird one to say but I regard Crawley as the best Bazballer. He’s streaky, but he’s naturally positive, looks to get set by scoring and crucially doesn’t play stupid shots (which is an annoyingly common feature of our middle order). No comments so far about Crawley’s innings - absolutely terrific. Enabled by Moeen seeing off the new ball. One of the best days of an England batting in the Ashes I can remember.
A broken clock is right twice a day.Three catches for @Pakenhamtrain wheelie bin yesterday. Wonder if it can get some runs with the bat today
Anderson takes a wicket with the first ball of the day. Good start.
Thrice a day in this caseA broken clock is right twice a day.
The Aussies did seem to lose the plot a bit. I expect England will have a good thrash this morning and aim to declare after lunch. Tomorrow looks like a write off weather wise and Sunday looks patchy. In other matters. I do not get Australia's tactics. Cummins seems to not have a clue on earth the moments start leaking.
In an alarming turn of events I find myself in agreement! He had a good day. He needs a hell of a lot more good days, consistently, to make up for the performance so far this series...A broken clock is right twice a day.
I expect old table tennis bat hands to return to his usual format dropping sitters and leaking runs like a submarine with a fly screen door leaks.
There is already light rain in the early hours of Friday morning in south Manchester, on top of the worse weather due over the weekend.I expect England will have a good thrash this morning and aim to declare after lunch. Tomorrow looks like a write off weather wise and Sunday looks patchy.
That could put a dampener on events! There is already light rain in the early hours of Friday morning in south Manchester, on top of the worse weather due over the weekend.
Mitchell Starc seemed to have two injuries as the day went on, on the second day. He is a big lad and must have jarred something when attempting to stop a boundary when he fell heavily. He did make a return, but went off again when he was unable to throw a ball back to the bowler when fielding. In other matters. I do not get Australia's tactics. At least I'm at the footy tonight

Hiding away? It is not long past the noon hour and whilst Stokes has fallen for 51, Brook is 50 not out and England have moved on to 453-5.![]()

Fingers crossed with the weather conditions over the next few days that England are on course for a winEngland eventually all out for 592 in only 107.4 overs, a lead of 275 runs.

Anderson tied one end down in the Australian second innings (11 - 4 - 17 - 0), whilst Wood wreaked havoc at the other end.
