And back in Div 2, what was ambling along as a fairly ordinary match saw Lancashire beat Essex by an innings and 105 runs, bowling Essex out for 20 runs. Chapple took 5 for 9 in 7 overs, Hogg 4 for 11 in 7.

That's a remarkable scoreline! Just one of those days, I suppose, I can't believe that Essex could ever bat that poorly or Chapple and Hogg, good as they are, ever would have thought that they would bowl a side out in an hour!

Shocking display by Essex. It's their worst-ever first-class innings, and the worst in county cricket since 1983. One of those days (or afternoons) :cry:

Another great result for Essex in the YB40, demolishing Surrey to the tune of a 178-run defeat.

As a Lancashire supporter of very many years standing, I could not resist in quoting your recent Essex posting, after their 20 all out second innings performance against Lancashire.

Glen Chapple, at the ripe old age of 39, must have enjoyed his late-order batting heroics for a half-century, as he then took 5 wickets in just over 7 overs.

I did not realise how much fun there was to be had in the second division of the County Championship...

Jimmy Anderson added another three more to his growing total of ODI victims in the England reduced-overs win over New Zealand.

However, the ten run victory by England was looking too close to call at one time in this match.

Cricinfo suggests it's due to poor results since the start of the season.

I like that! There's often too many comments on, for example, Cricinfo regarding 'ifs' and 'buts', especially from one particular corner of the world, once the team is selected, that's it....nothing can be changed, and you just have to get on playing against the opposing eleven.
If England retain the Ashes this year, no doubt there will be plenty of comments from our antipodean colleagues expressing the view that Aus would have done much better if Ponting/Hussey/Bradman were playing....just move on!

It was England's for the taking when Morgan and Bopara were together, Morgan and Buttler must be ruing the shots they played, at least Bopara's was off the middle. I'm afraid that of all the England players Tredwell was the least likely to score off the last few balls. Oh well, now onto the Summer's main fare!

In a most unusually-timed situation, Australia have now announced that the Pakistan-born leg spinner, Fawad Ahmed, has been granted full Australian citizenship and state that this will now enable him to be immediately considered for inclusion in their Test Match squad.

I am rather amused by the decaying status of England's "Warm Up" match v Essex. Having chosen to approach the county side (recently bowled out for 20 by Lancashire) for a competititve First Class game, the first thing to go wrong was when the Essex "B" attack managed to get England batsmen out. Then plan "b" came into effect, with Bresnan and Swann making 199 between them. Oh No! The Essex bowler then bruised Swann's arm, so he couldn't bowl - which had been one of the reasons the match was arranged. Never mind - the seamers did the damage, ably assisted by Root, who posted career best figures. Come the England second innings, however, the two Essex strike bowlers had only gone and injured themselves, so the much-needed "competitive" batting was against third-string bowlers. So England requested permission for Essex to bring in replacement bowlers. Fine, but the match loses first class status, much to the chagrin of Bresnan (104 - best score since 2007), Swann (94 - likewise best score since 2007) and Root (4 for 20 odd, best bowling figures) have their match records wiped out. And the day ended with Cook and Trott both "Retired Out", which i have never seen outside village green cricket.
Perfect preparation for the Ashes.

Second womens ODI (50 overs) match at Loughborough

England restricted Pakistan to 156-6 from their 50 overs, with Natalie Scriver 3-28 and Arran Brindle 3-38 both bowling well. Then Charlotte Edwards played a captains innings (as ever) by top scoring with 62 as England won by 6 wickets with no less than 12 overs to spare, to take the series 2-0.

They ended the day on 75-4, with Smith (in at number 5) scoring 38 not out with 1x6 and 5x4. The session up to lunch tomorrow could be an important session for either side.

The weather looks to be fine for the next few days.

If Stuart Broad isn't fit enough to bowl, then Captain Cook has to keep rotating Anderson & Finn with Swann at the other end, maybe with Jonathan Trott bowling his medium pacers.

England I think would be the happier of the two sides (and certainly I think they're in the driving seat, even if it isn't comfortable just yet). Whilst our batting performance wasn't fantastic I'd take serious heart from the lack of impact all of their bowlers, other than Siddle, had on our line up. If he's all they've got then they're in real trouble. As for our bowling even without Broad it appears more than up to the task.

As long as we get rid of them either before or just after lunch all is well methinks.
