SSP. So extremely expensive. Not a huge amount of choice, but if you're just after a quick pint between trains, which most of their customers will be I suppose, it's adequate enough.

It's all nitro-keg unfortunately. Also, I don't think they do many bottled beers (unlike the bar at Preston which at least has some decent bottled ales to choose from).

Shame really as it's a good location and so much more could be done with it.

Best leaving the station, there are a couple of pubs 5 minutes walk along Nantwich Road.

Brunswick or British Lion are ok - ish!

I usually try and break my journey at Chester when I can!

I must admit, I find Crewe station to be a thing of beauty, so I do tend to change there if there's good reason. I'll have to give the other pubs a try some time !

The grotty hotel you are thinking of may well have been the Waverley. The Station Hotel was also suffering in terms of quality before it closed. Nearest half decent hotel in walking distance from the station is probably the Holiday Inn Express.

Wasn't there one called The Alexandra Arms or similar, I think you could see it when pulling out of the station, Northbound.

Don't know about pubs, but there is a decent curry house which was good for killing the 59 minutes the connection from north of Preston used to miss the MKC service by. Out of the station, turn left, carry on a while, on your left. I assume it's still there.

The pub on the station is just as MJ Hibbett describes the one at Birmingham New St, though fortunately the loos don't cost cash and the signage isn't all that appalling. It also closes long before the Caledonian Sleeper calls, which I saw as a bit of a missed opportunity.

The Crewe Arms is now a Best Western hotel and still open. I stayed last year for a couple of nights and albeit basic, it was clean and comfortable (and has a fantastic departure screen behind reception!)

Whatpub still has the Crewe Arms Hotel as open; it's part of the Best Western Group. Sadly no real ale is available.

It certainly was unexpectedly closed with just a handwritten note on the door!
Best Western claim it's theirs and open...but if you actually try to book it, it denies all knowledge of it. Their former direct phone number is disconnected.
It doesn't help that there are several hotels all called "Crewe Arms"!

Hops and the Borough Arms are both very decent, though a fair trek from the station. The latter overlooks the Preston line.

It always seems odd that a town that owes its existence entirely to the railway has its centre so far from the station. I suppose the station was an interchange rather than a destination from the start, and as far as the town was concerned the works was more key to its life.

Beer Dock on Nantwich Road was very good but it closed just before the pandemic.

I really wasn't impressed at all when I went into the one at Crewe. Busy, tiny, barely anywhere to sit.. poor decor and feels more like a waiting room. Couldn't give feedback on anything they served as I didn't get a drink.

Give me the pubs at Huddersfield and Stalybridge any day instead..

Best Western to be fair is a very loose franchise operation with very variable quality, so this is not at all surprising.

Yes, I know of someone who booked the Crewe Arms due to its convenience for joining a railtour early one Sunday morning. Unfortunately, they got the one at Madeley resulting in a couple of long and expensive taxi rides!

Ah, no, I know that one in Derby, have been there a couple of times, there is or was, another rail related pub almost next door to that one too.

Crewe Arms hotel is currently being used by Cheshire East council to house Afghan asylum seekers and refugees before they are found permanent accommodation. It is not currently open to the public.

I walked past that a few months back not knowing about the 37 cab, one of those double take "What the......" moments!! Is it known by anyone which 37 it's from? Tried googling before but found nothing.
