That was a general arrangement between Cross Country, London Midland and EMT - they crew shared for the first 12 months or so to cover the old CT timetables while they built up their own depots. Another regular one was London Midland Crewe traincrew working the Crewe to Derby services.

also xc tm's were doing the cross city line as well.

Most likely it was one of the hire-in 158's. Saw one of them a while back when I had to do my 150 training on from Swindon - Cheltenham Spa.

It might also be possible that the crew who were on the service from Bath Spa could have been travelling passenger to Westbury? Sound plausible. I have only ever seen SWT staff working the services and am not aware of any agreement with SWT to crew any services.

FGW used to crew the Waterloo-Penzance service beyond Exeter but the service has ceased now.

Believe the TPE anglo scotish srevices may now be crewed by blackpool based drivers, ans there is a s pool of TPE drivers based in scotland ( sure I saw adverts for quallified drivers in edinburgh and glasgow)

Yes. FLHH now relieved of the turns officially, but as Preston is still pretty thin they can be called up. Glasgow depot is tiny. Edinburgh didn't have one until recently.

Barrow are apparently getting 350 on their cards and via Chat Moss as will Liverpool. Scottish crews will come no further than Preston.

So in the event of driver shortage, can crews be borrowed from other TOCs (subject to traction knowledge and route knowledge) or is it much more complicated than that?

Hastings drivers (South Eastern) used to sign the Marsh Link line at one point. Of course, at one point, it was under the operation of South Eastern (Pre-1996).

Bit more complicated. All paperwork needs to be in order, extensions of safety case to cover other staff, access to staff competencies. Not overly complicated if being done every day, but a bit too much if done once during disruption.

And I can't think of anywhere where that may occur now.

Nottingham - Sheffield for Northern/EMT. Newport - Cardiff for FGW/ATW. Manchester - Luverpool for Northern/EMT.

It ceased many years ago, but there used to be a Central Trains service from Birmingham Snow Hill to Leamington Spa and return that was operated on CT's behalf by Chiltern using a Chiltern 165 and staff.

There were quite a few of those, they were worked by Chiltern crew and stock but would appear in the Central timetable. I'm pretty sure the 23:xx all stations from Snow Hill to Banbury was technically a Central service to Leamington Spa.

One word: Paperwork.

And historical reasons! ;)

FGW Drivers do sign the route. Infact they used to sign all the way to Three Bridges from Reading many moons ago.

We use Redhill Southern drivers on there for the first trains from Gatwick and the last trains towards there. The rest are done by Reading drivers and Reading/Redhill Guards.

Beat me to it!

FGW do say that RDH-GTW can be DOO, so presumably as and when necessary this method of operation is carried out by both FGW and Southern.

I believe that due to "issues" within DBS/EWS which was causing them to cancel numerous services at short notice (charters & freight) they hired in FLHH drivers to take on the freight workings, they were officially working for Freightliner as DB was paying FL a sizable amount for the privilege. Thinking back I'm sure I've seen a few EWS 66s go past with drivers in Green at the controls... Probably got footage somewhwere.

I stand corrected. It was someone else who told me that Southern drives did that part of the route. I guess they were partly right.

What does DOO stand for?

Driver Only Operated. No other Safety Critical Member of staff working the train, only the driver, in general terms, this means there is no guard.
