Apologies if this has been answered already, but does anyone know how often there are instances with the passenger TOCs where drivers and/or conductors work trains of a different TOC?

Examples I know of are:-
Scarborough - Hull and Barton - Cleethorpes (TPE staff working on Northern units)
Newcastle -Carlisle (Northern staff working on ScotRail units)

But are there many other examples of this on the network?

Also, are there cases where drivers and conductors may work the same train but work for different TOCs?

FGW services between Redhill and Gatwick airport are worked by Southern drivers.

not sure why they just don't teach the FGW drivers the route.

Southern drivers from redhill work the Thames turbo from gatwick to reading.

As for the southeastern thameslinks both FCC and southeastern drivers sign Bedford to the southeastern routes but technically its a southeastern service from blackfriars south.

I don't know if the still do but EWS drivers used to work Manchester-Scotland for trans pennine.

Are the Paddington - Worcester trains still worked by Worcester (LM) crew after Oxford or are they all Great Western staff these days?

I thought that was Freightliner HH men that took TPE services Carlisle - Scotland and they were issues with TPE uniforms

Digress slightly but would it not make sense for VT Drivers depot at Chester rather than have Liverpool/Manchester men doing it

No. Haven't been for several years since frequencies between Worcester and Birmingham were increased and Central needed all its drivers for those jobs. And it was only ever the drivers who were hired in to drive Turbo services. Thames Trains and, since 2004, FGW have always had a guards depot at Worcester.

The Cheltenham Spa from Swindon often has a SWT trains unit with FGW staff. Likewise the Waterloo service from Bath Spa (think it comes from Bristol Temple Meads) has FGW crew on SWT units.

Because FGW dont have any drivers at Redhill, only Conductors/Guards.

Believe the TPE anglo scotish srevices may now be crewed by blackpool based drivers, ans there is a s pool of TPE drivers based in scotland ( sure I saw adverts for quallified drivers in edinburgh and glasgow)

Not quite the same thimg. This is the leasing of a unit.

The Waterloo / Bristol SWT services are fully crewed by SWT.

Or just transfer the service to Southern?

I suppose theres the question of stock too? How many units are required, could the 171 fleet cover this route if it was released from the Uckfields?

Another question on this subject - do the Driver and Guard always have to be from the same TOC? Its certainly the case on FTPE operating Northern services between Hull and Scarborough, but is a crew made up of a mix of staff permitted?

FGW Drivers do sign the route. Infact they used to sign all the way to Three Bridges from Reading many moons ago.

We use Redhill Southern drivers on there for the first trains from Gatwick and the last trains towards there. The rest are done by Reading drivers and Reading/Redhill Guards.

A number of drivers based at Manchester/Liverpool live in North Wales anyway, they always 'volunteer' for the turns which start in North Wales avoiding a long taxi journey for a driver based elsewhere.

Holyhead is already a TM/Catering depot. There was a plan to move drivers there as well but not sure if its still on.

The practical side of having Liverpool/Manchester crews sign Voyagers means that every depot signs Voyagers and theoretically they can step in on any service if a Pendo is unavailable.

Most likely it was one of the hire-in 158's. Saw one of them a while back when I had to do my 150 training on from Swindon - Cheltenham Spa.

It might also be possible that the crew who were on the service from Bath Spa could have been travelling passenger to Westbury? Sound plausible. I have only ever seen SWT staff working the services and am not aware of any agreement with SWT to crew any services.

I believe that in the early days of the East Midlands Trains franchise, the XC depot at Leicester (ex-CT) worked some Leicester - Nottingham - Lincoln services, but this was only a short lived arrangement. I'm not entirely certain on this though, so could anyone clarify?

That was a general arrangement between Cross Country, London Midland and EMT - they crew shared for the first 12 months or so to cover the old CT timetables while they built up their own depots. Another regular one was London Midland Crewe traincrew working the Crewe to Derby services.
