None of this speculation is helpful. The OP didn’t have a ticket and boarded without one, and doesn’t have a defence to that offence.

Yep, then the OP proceeded to use abusive language to staff when asked to give details, which is why that's why the TOC are taking the OP to court, rather than giving the OP an out of court settlement.

Yep and that’s why that element of the case was dropped

Thanks, I attended court 2 weeks ago in Sheffield. I pleased not guilty to the abuse charges, which I was advised that it would need to go to trial. My brother wrote a statement advising that he used 1 swear word and that I didn’t swear hence it being dropped.

The court was full of cases, I saw a number of them dismissed very quickly.

Glad I defended myself and received a fair and the correct outcome.

I’ll ensure I buy the correct ticket in future!

Thanks for the guidance and positive responses.

And that kind of sums up what's wrong with this country. An argument about £3.70 and potentially a court trial over some swearing - or not swearing.

The prosecution obviously didn’t want to stand a witness for their side and offered no evidence, very common.
Presumably the cost of the ticket inspector attending Court all day waiting for your case to be heard was deemed not to be worth it when he/she could be out catching other ticket offenders, netting more income.
