I’m guessing Salwick will be closed once this station opens and anyone for westinghousing power plant will be required to use cottam parkway
I don't believe that is the plan. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the stop on the Blackpool South services as it doesn't fit in the existing schedules. It also makes the Liverpool turnarounds tight and the York ones less resilient. Fit for 8 x 25m too.

Maybe only the Manchester’s will call every 30 minutes?

That’s if they fit into the castlefield corridor as it adding time could slow down a service behind it or reduce the turnaround time at Manchester airport. That seems the most likely do west of Preston has a direct Manchester service

I thought that, but Salwick station received a major refurb when the line was electrified 5 years ago.

BTW - the number of new homes being built in the surrounding area is eye-watering.

Maybe makes a case for a loop to enable Blackpool South to go to half-hourly?

Assuming the demand is going to be there then it is probably worth looking at the interworking of diagrams and/or the Blackpool turn-around times to facilitate more stops.

Manchester services would be sensible as it would be logical that some residents would work in Manchester (also to a lesser extent Liverpool).

As @GRALISTAIR notes there is a lot of development going on and a station could be very useful for the new residents.

You wouldn't alter the times east of Cottam, you eat into the Blackpool turnaround. Arrive later, leave earlier.

Doubt it. Anyone from Cottam wanting the Blackpool South line will be forced into a change at Kirkham. It would be about a 6 minute connection off the York into a Blackpool South and 11 going the other way.

Thanks as always.

I do quite like the fact that you will have a train that stops at some very small places (e.g Moss Side) then running non-stop through the new Cottam station.

It would be nice if there was a loop on the Blackpool South line, but it is very much a speculative discussion to talk of it.

Like you, I can only see the turnaround at Blackpool North being played with to accommodate Cottam. I do not know whether there is wriggle room there or not, but with similar units used on Liverpool - Blackpool North and Manchester - Blackpool North then maybe there is more interworking.

Maybe a second Liverpool - Blackpool North even (but again that is hugely speculative).

Thanks for the update. I am home in Preston on Saturday and was going to ask my councilor friend for an update. Looks like they will start on site in 2026 as I am retiring so I will be able to post regular photographic and other updates.

Excellent news all round. Thanks again.

Here is the BBC article. Looks like boots on the ground January 2027.

A long-planned railway station serving a growing community on the western edge of Preston has moved a step closer to becoming a reality after funding for the project was finally secured.
Lancashire's Combined County Authority (LCCA) has approved £28.2m towards the construction of Cottam Parkway, a new station on the line between Preston and Blackpool.
The money plugs a funding gap that had threatened the future of the scheme, which was first proposed more than a decade ago.
The station will be built on land between Lea Road and Sidgreaves Lane in Lea and is intended to serve the expanding Cottam and North West Preston areas.
Work is expected to begin next year, with the first passenger services expectee to call at the station in December 2030, the Local Democracy Reporting Service, external has learned.
When it opens, passengers could reach Preston in around five minutes and Blackpool in about 20 minutes. The station will also provide direct rail links to Manchester.
The LCCA has now agreed the funding taking the total budget for the project to £56.6m.
The government announced last year that it would contribute £28.4m towards the development, subject to approval of a business case. However, rising costs had pushed the overall price of the scheme to more than £55m, leaving a significant shortfall.
The latest funding allocation means the project can now progress, with Lancashire County Council set to deliver the station on behalf of the combined authority. Around 17,000 people are expected to live within the station's catchment area when it opens, with forecasts suggesting about 644,000 rail journeys each year will start or end there. Plans for the site include two platforms capable of accommodating eight-carriage trains, a station building with waiting facilities, lifts and a footbridge, a 250-space car park and bus connections. The scheme was first proposed as part of Lancashire County Council's Central Lancashire Highways and Transport Masterplan in 2013.Planning permission was granted in 2023 and most of the land required for the development is now in public ownership. The project is designed to support more than 6,000 homes planned for Cottam and North West Preston over the coming years, providing a new public transport option for one of the area's fastest-growing communities.

Quite eye watering imho.

When the lin was electrified in 2015 Cottam Parkway was just a blink in the eye. Times and plans change and Salwick will aimost certainly close as it only has a peak hour service.
Salwick is the only station in Fylde that I have never visited and am unlikely to as I no longer drive. At least I can say that I have been on a train to and from Fleetwood.

Salwick will probably remain open, similar to when Warrington West effectively replaced Sankey station. Will cost more for the paperwork to close it than what would be save
