What is this other suitable diesel stock? I don't get how the 170s can leave TPE before EMUs beyond the present 10 have arrived without a significant reduction in capacity.

My best guess is that the TPex Blackpool trains will be transferred to Northern, to be operated by cascaded DMUs: by 2015/16 there should be just about spare DMUs floating around to paper over the cracks, I would think. This works doubly if the two franchises are merged.

This makes sense, as if it comes from Glasgow as 3 car they can attach a service from iether cumbria or Blackpool to it at PRE and iether make it into a fast commuter service calling Wiggan only or more likely work it via Bolton as yet another TPE Sardine Special. My bets are the last Glasgow Northbound at night will be the 185, splitting at PRE.↲

Well on the info available via realtime and opentrains, no attachments or splitting on the 0422 and runs via Wigan. Last GLC/EDB services both booked as 350 EMUs with no splitting, so its a mystery where the unit will come from.

Think its become fairly apparent that they will not be merged.

But i agree that i TPE route is likely to be transferred and i would guess that one.. But i am still very concerned about this proposal to remove the 170s.

Patrick McLoughlin implied towards the end of last year that two new franchises will be let in 2016 and Rail North will have some involvement in setting the terms of both.

So basically taking more 185s off the North West route and replacing them with lower-quality stock. The 185s weren't just built for the cross-Pennine routes, they were built to replace the 175s and so the route should continue to be run with 185s until electric stock is available, whether in the current franchise or a different one. If anything the 185s are more suitable for semi-fast Blackpool workings than the long distance East-West services because of the commuter style layout.

Just to be clear First/Kelios decided 56 x 3 car trains would be needed to run all the routes they were given at the time which didn't include Scottish services and they did want an option to lengthen some trains to 4 carriages if passenger numbers grew. SRA decided they could have 51 x 3 car trains and 9 x cascaded 2 car 170s, while TPE have been expected to run additional Scottish services with existing stock up until now and despite huge growth didn't get the option to lengthen trains.

Today saw 350408 out on the 1008 GLC-MIA (and presumably the inbound working), looking very new, very clean and still in "ghost train" livery without any branding save for carriage letter stickers in the windows.

Was this its first revenue earning day?

Believe so and 407 reported out too.

Yup, I was on the inbound working yesterday (06:42 Wigan North Western to Oxenholme on 350408). It happened to be my first 350 bash, and it turned out to be the guard's first 350 outing as well! :)

EDIT: Incidentally, I don't recall hearing that 'spaceship' noise that you hear on other 350 units. Was something done to suppress that noise?

That would be 1008 EDB-MIA. It was at Lancaster around 07.15 on the northbound trip. And again today.

Was surprised to see 407 in service last week (Wednesday) on the 0723 LAN-MIA.

407 & 408 rolled through Piccadilly 11 minutes late tonight, the delayed 16:29 from platform 13 - carpets looked grubby already

Are the 350s doing all the Manchester - Scotland services now or do some remain 185 operated?

If not all, does anyone know typical diagrams for a saturday?

The majority are still 185 run going off what I've seen.

Nope! All other 350s and 360s and 450s for that matter definetly make that noise! It's less pronounced in a 380 though, and I've never been on a 444.

Agree with this too. It's much more noticeable from the outside. That's why I love 323s, similar (better, IMO) amazing noise and one you can still appreciate from inside!

I believe the answer you're looking for with the 350/4s is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mA2AvyiBYFI#t=73

Still sounds like the same noise to me :)

After playing this and a few other 350/4 videos, I notice that it's the front coach that makes most of the noise. When I alighted from 350408 at Oxenholme, I definitely did not hear it even though I stood near to it as it pulled away, but I alighted from coach B (2nd from rear) which may explain why I didn't hear it. I also found a video of 350408 itself which proves it is no different from the others, so case closed. :)

The traction motors on Desiros are contained in the first two, and last two bogies (So both the front & rear of coaches A & D, but not B & C). The sound insulation on the units is such that travelling in coach B or C you are unlikely to hear them at all from the inside.

As for the 323s, that seems pretty loud even on the inside, from the videos I've watched. It's an 'interesting' noise shall we say... :)

Agreed, you can open the windows on 323s also if you feel necessary.

I actually saw this myself this afternoon passing through Oxford Road while I was heading to Piccadilly on 12:58 Wigan Northwestern-Piccadilly Trans Pennine Express service, it was being hauled by a Class 92 with 2 containers at the front and 2 cylinder things at the back (The 350 not the TPX service)

Passed Trafford Park this evening and there was a container train with a 350/4 in it and I could sworn it was 350402. Would I be correct?

Cheers. Windows were a little mucky (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it).

The reason I thought it was 402 is I gathered TPE had not accepted it so I wondered if they were sending it back.
