Do any trains still get painted rather than vinyl-ed these days?

All trains are painted. The 350/4 have been painted.

From what I've heard they will be painted eventually but the design is still being done. I also heard they want all the units to be delivered and tested before being painted, and once that is all done all the units will be painted within the space of a week.

No they are being viynalled, something than can be done a lot quicker.

According to Modern Railways the 170's are to go to Chiltern in 2015/6. MR is a reliable source of information. Page 14 in the new issue.

That's what I meant. All trains are vinyled now aren't they if they have a complex job - TPE 185s? And they are only painted at the factory or painted at depots if the job is simple - Greater Anglia.

There is a significant differences between the two. Paint protects, vinyl doesn't really.

In fact, thinking of FGWs experience, doesn't vinyl run the risk of damaging the integrity of the areas it covers?

I think the 175s were painted into the livery they're wearing now. Each unit went to Oxley depot individually and spent a couple of weeks in the paint shop.

The vinyls on the 185s appear to be wearing well and still look fresh. I assume they are the originals as the Liverpool City of Culture 2008 one is still around.

On the other hand, one (at least) of Northern's 144s was looking very dull and tatty the other day with the red Metro paint showing through in a few places.

Quite likely. Nonetheless, the vinyls seem to be pretty withstanding of regular cleaning, more so than plain paint.

The 185s still look brand spanking new in their vinyls. The Arriva vinyls on 175110 on the other hand were literally falling off when it was repainted 5 years ago and they were applied around the same time as when the first 185s came into service in neon livery. Think it's down to the quality of the vinyls more than anything.

how are TPE ment to reduce overcrouding if the 170s cascade to Chilten? Theres only 10 350s after all and no announcement of anything else.

From what I gather, the deal is that Chiltern would take over the ROSCO lease but would then sublease to TransPennine. Then, as the TPX electrification program gets done, they would order their new electric fleet (which would also likely replace the 350s, which then go to London Midland) and cascade 185s to free up 170s to send south. Doing it this way presumably reduces the complication of a short-term ROSCO lease while guaranteeing Chiltern some more stock compatible with what they have already. The complication would be that 185s are heavier than 170s and can't use the Sprinter speed differentials on some of the lines, but this would likely be only in the sort term as they would be electrified soon enough anyway, or other suitable diesel stock could be used in the meantime.

And to go through procurement and construction it would be 2017 before new stock would be available if they started today, article said Chiltern were planning to use them in 2015 and 2016 :(

Recorded this on one of the new 350's on my way home... the announcements always keep messing up on them

Nobody laughed in that video? Must have been a quiet train :P People were in hysterics on my Metro today when it made a similar announcement - appeared to speed up as the rest of the announcement was really very slow.

What is this other suitable diesel stock? I don't get how the 170s can leave TPE before EMUs beyond the present 10 have arrived without a significant reduction in capacity.

Is it increasingly likely the units will remain unbranded?

Apparently the 350s won't cover all scottish diagrams

And a 185 on the windermere branch is surely a waste of unit

Yes I have heard that 1 Manchester-Scotland shuttle will still be 185, possibly as a double. I shall take care to find out which, so that any through journey I make for my holiday there in the summer is 350-operated.

Think at weekends one diagram will be 6 car 185 to allow an extra 8 car 350 diagram. Monday-Thursday it is all 350 operated.

It's been pointed out a few times in this thread (or one of the other 350 threads in this forum) - that might be where you heard it...

TPE have also quoted it on their twitter feed. However the only train showing still in DMU timings after May timetable change is the 04:22 from Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport.

Next two units are reported as arriving 2nd March with an overnight delivery.

Indeed they did - passed them (407 & 409) embedded in a tunnel-freight (presumably bound for Trafford Park) morning of 1st March

Which will only operate M-F and is of little consequence owing to the times it operates - will be lucky if it carries any pax at all until Carlisle, especially as the 0428 Glasgow-Euston overtakes it before Carlisle, and by changing at Preston off the 0428, arrival at the Manchester stations would be 30 minutes earlier.

However for this train to be 185 worked, there would have to be a balancing northbound working to either Glasgow or Edinburgh the previous evening?

This makes sense, as if it comes from Glasgow as 3 car they can attach a service from iether cumbria or Blackpool to it at PRE and iether make it into a fast commuter service calling Wiggan only or more likely work it via Bolton as yet another TPE Sardine Special. My bets are the last Glasgow Northbound at night will be the 185, splitting at PRE.↲

If one service (per day?) is staying as DMU then we should fight for it to sent through Bolton and Chorley. Wigan has more than enough capacity.
